Jackson Academy student Sydney Thaxton is part of a creative family with a television producer dad, an English teacher mom, and a brother who is first chair in the 2017 Lions All-State Band. She dabbled in writing short stories before coming to JA. But it was JA teacher Grace Simmons’ fifth-grade English class that inspired Sydney to complete her first book, Dusk. Simmons focuses a lot on writing, encouraging students to find their voice and use writing as a means of developing critical thinking skills.
