After 141 years of serving greater San Antonio, the Y understands what our community needs to be its best. Working with compassionate
volunteers and donors, as well as talented staff, the Y provides everyone the opportunity to be healthy and thrive, connect with others, and
contribute to a better community.
In 2016 we embarked on our Vision 2020 journey to take on the challenges that shape our city’s future. Vision 2020 defines what we want
to achieve within the Y’s three focus areas (healthy living, youth development and social responsibility) by concentrating on five priorities:
brand identity, community connection, youth enhancement, community well-being and expanding our reach.
We have made great progress thus far and as we continue to move forward, it’s important to reflect on the amazing year we had in 2016.
We are successfully growing and expanding because we are working together.
Here are a few highlights of our first year.
• The Y celebrated the groundbreaking of the Harvey E. Najim Family YMCA on the City’s southside. The 14,000 square foot facility will
bring new activities, resources and nutrition to a community that is in need of a safe place to gather and build healthy habits for spirit,
mind and body. Scheduled to open August 2017.
• We experienced a great response from our renovation at the D.R. Semmes Family YMCA which added approximately 5,000 square feet
of new member space for that community.
• The Mays Family YMCA at Potranco opened in November. This 58,000 square foot facility includes a teaching kitchen and a branch of
the San Antonio Public Library.
• The Y partnered with the City of Schertz to open the Schertz Aquatics Center. This is the first indoor aquatics center in the area that
features an eight lane pool as well as a leisure pool.
A MESSAGE
FROM OUR
LEADERSHIP
• We are continuing to provide our community with access to healthy food and nutrition education by holding food distribution events, and
providing summer meals and snacks.
We believe in accessibility, opportunity, and inclusion for all. The Y’s reach is broad; everyone has the opportunity to belong and we are
committed to strengthening the foundations of the community everyday.
We are grateful for our visionary volunteers, committed donors, and loyal & talented staff.
Thank you!
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Bill Martin
NURTURING
THEIR POTENTIAL
Bill Martin is a dedicated YMCA Camp Flaming Arrow (CFA)
volunteer and donor. He served as the executive director of CFA in
the 1980’s and watched his kids grow up at Camp. The invaluable
experience that Camp provided his children is one of the reasons
Bill remains active with CFA.
Today, Bill is an active fundraiser who is constantly advocating for
CFA. For Bill, nothing is impossible. He has taken special interest in
formalizing the CFA alumni group and has organized multiple alumni
events. Bill’s history and dedication will be instrumental as the Y
begins building a master plan for CFA in the year to come.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
HEALTHY LIVING
Rip Stimpson
IMPROVING
THEIR HEALTH & WELL-BEING
A Purple Heart recipient and retired Marine, Rip Stimpson is
the embodiment of servant leadership. Rip has served on the
Walzem Family YMCA Board of Directors since it opened in 2011.
Rip’s presence within the Walzem Family YMCA means that every
member, program participant and staff member has someone they
can confide in. Young staff members often look to him for support
when it comes to the responsibilities and challenges that come
along with adulthood. He is an active volunteer who is always
willing to lend a helping hand and never lets a new member go
unnoticed.
Rip has lived in the Windcrest/Walzem Community since his early
days as a furniture salesman. He recalls with fond devotion how
proud he was to move his family to Windcrest as a young man.
Not only is Rip a key leader of the annual Walzem Family YMCA
Golf Tournament, he is also a supporter of Windcrest United
Methodist Church, Windcrest Golf Club and the Windcrest Volunteer
Firefighters Association.
Rip is a shining example of what a healthy spirit, mind and body can
do, not only for yourself, but for the community we create in the Y
as well as in the neighborhood.
HEALTHY LIVING
The Y aims to improve the nation’s health and well-being by
providing programs and activities that promote wellness,
reduce risk for disease and help others reclaim their health.
From holistic medically-based wellness programs to small
group activities for active older adults and fitness classes
for all ages, we help everyone reach their full potential -
regardless of their financial situation or ability to pay.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Patrick Cleary
GIVING BACK
& PROVIDING SUPPORT
In 2016, Patrick Cleary paved the way for a new opportunity for
individuals with disabilities in the town of Boerne, and he started
by walking into the YMCA. Patrick wanted to begin a Miracle League
in Boerne. Miracle League is a national organization that provides
opportunities for children with disabilities to play baseball.
He was so passionate and committed that he inspired the Y, city
and community to join him in creating a more inclusive city. Quickly,
he became active with the Y. He joined the advisory board, became
a financial contributor, and helped to connect the right people for
the Miracle League to take root.
From his efforts, the Miracle League was established in the Hill
Country engaging 45 special needs youth in its first year. He
helped host a game in the summer and was more involved with the
first league later that fall. He has recruited volunteers, spoken to
many service clubs, and engaged city, county and school district
leadership in the program.
Patrick will never take credit, but he has positively impacted the
Boerne community and created awareness and opportunities for
families and individuals with disabilities.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
We know that when we work together, we move
individuals, families and communities forward. The
Y responds to society’s most pressing needs by
developing innovative, community-based solutions to
help those in need. We are also committed to inspiring a
spirit of service by uniting individuals from all walks of
life to participate in and work for positive social change.
The James E. Hamer Award is given on an annual basis to a YMCA Staff Member
who exemplifies cause-driven leadership through their service to the Y.
The Y’s cause is to strengthen community. A cause-driven leader creates lasting
personal and social change within our organization’s three areas of focus: youth
development, healthy living and social responsibility. The leader is committed to
nurturing the potential of kids, promoting health and well-being, and fostering a
sense of social responsibility.
Community Well-Being
The recipient of the Cause Driven Leader Award is Kristine Gusman, chosen
because of her dedication to the health and well-being of our community.
As Executive Director of the Y Living Center since 2014, Kristine Gusman oversees
the daily operations, programs, and membership, as well as all medically-based
wellness programs offered at the YMCA of Greater San Antonio.
Gusman has worked with the families and individuals in the Y Living programs
for the last five years and has been with the YMCA of Greater San Antonio for
21 years. She has a passion for helping others understand the importance of
behavioral changes resulting in a healthier lifestyle and an even bigger heart for
providing services in under-served communities.
Kristine is the epitome of what it means to be a mentor, especially when it comes
to her staff. Her charisma and passion for individuals and families carries over to
the Y Living Center team. Together, they provide an environment where people
feel safe and welcomed.
Whether it is the Y Living Program, YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program,
LIVESTRONG at the Y or one of many others she oversees, Kristine recognizes the
potential in everyone. She understands that each individual is unique and will have
a different path. But most of all, Kristine creates confidence within ever person
she meets.
