Global trader buys Associated Grain

which has been bought by Agrocorp, Singapore.
Dalby-based seed and grain
company, Associated Grain, is
about to expand with its recent
sale to Agrocorp International of
Singapore.
Western Downs Mayor Paul
McVeigh spoke about the sale
of the business at a recent
Toowoomba Council function.
He welcomed the new owners,
because they planned to expand
the business, which would enhance
opportunities for farmers
on the Darling Downs and in
Queensland and NSW, providing
a strong direct link into the
primary markets of the Indian
sub-continent.
Former Associated Grain
co-owner and managing director
Todd Jorgensen, who will
continue as CEO, said the new
owners decided immediately
to expand silo storage by 2800
tonnes, with the addition of four
700 tonne silos.
Associated Grain has become
a major buyer, packer and trader
of a wide variety of pulses and
grain, particularly chickpeas and
mungbeans.
Mr Jorgenson said the expansion
could provide opportunities
for new farmers wanting to grow
pulses, but said pulses were a
challenge to grow, and farmers
should not decide lightly to enter
the industry.
“For a lot of farmers, chickpeas
were their major crop, but
others were not so successful,”
he said.
Mr Jorgensen said most of
their chickpeas were sold to India,
Pakistan and Bangladesh,
with some to Sri Lanka and also
the Middle East.
Agrocorp International is a
global agri-commodity trading
business, founded in Singapore
in 1990. Since its beginning, Agrocorp
has grown substantially
with offices in 14 countries including
Canada, China, Turkey,
India, Ivory Coast, Myanmar,
and now Australia.
It sees an annual trade volume
of 9 million tonnes across commodities
such as grains, pulses,
sugar, oilseeds, cashews and
cotton as well as trading revenues
upwards of 3 billion USD.
In pulses, Agrocorp is one of
the world’s leading buyers with
more than 1.5 million tonnes
traded in 2016.
With the addition of the Associated
Grain business, Agrocorp
will now bring international
markets directly to Australian
growers. This will further enhance
opportunities for farmers
in Queensland and NSW,
providing a strong direct link
into the primary markets of the
Indian sub-continent. Agrocorp
has historically been one of the
largest buyers of Australian
chickpeas and this acquisition
will give direct access to the end
users of their products as well as
the ability to supply timely and
high quality market information.
In the early 1950s, the Gosden
family started in the grain
industry trading as JH Gosden
Pty Ltd. They were mobile seed
graders.
The business proved to be
popular with local growers leading
to the construction of a grain
processing and storage facility in
Dalby.
In 1974, the Jorgensen family
joined the team and the business
was renamed Gosden Jorgensen
Seeds.
Through hard work and determination,
Jack Gosden and
Max Jorgensen made Gosden
Jorgensen Seeds one of the leading
grain and seed handling businesses
in the area.
In 1994, the Jorgensens
bought a second site, Associated
Grain. Located on the Warrego
Highway near Dalby, the site assisted
Gosden Jorgensen Seeds
with additional processing,
packing, grading and storage facilities
to accommodate increasing
demand.
In 2000, the two entities consolidated
and trade today as Associated
Grain.
