EQUESTRIAN
Glennie team triumph at
State championships
Equestrian Queensland hosted the Queensland
Interschool State Championships. More than 40
schools showcased their skills in dressage, showman,
showhorse and showjumping over three
days.
A team of 16 Glennie girls and their entourage
of parents, coaches and supporters converged on
the Toowoomba Showgrounds for three days of
equestrian excellence.
The showman competition is unique to Interschool
where all-round equestrian athletes demonstrate
a well developed capacity to present a horse
under saddle and in-hand.
Glennie riders impressed the judges with their
performance in the arena and were awarded the
Secondary Showman Champion Team trophy.
This is the fifth year Glennie has been victorious.
A second Glennie showman team also performed
solidly scooping the honour of secondary
showman reserve champions.
Dressage continues to be a popular discipline
with Glennie riders. Navigating pre-determined
movements with flair, they earned the secondary
dressage reserve champions accolade. Third
place wins in the showjumping and showhorse
disciplines rounded out a truly successful three
days of competition.
The Glennie School equestrian co-ordinator,
Miss Jacky Redman, said all girls were to be commended
on their skill and sportsmanship in the
face of tough competition. Riders will now focus
their training efforts on the next event, Combined
Training and Eventing to take place later this
month.
A celebration of a beloved children’s television
program, unique heritage trade workshops, artisan
markets and fun school holiday programs contributed
to recording-breaking crowds at Cobb and Co
Museum in 2016-17.
Queensland Premier and Minister for the Arts
Annastacia Palaszczuk congratulated the museum,
home to the National Carriage Collection, for attracting
more than 100,000 visitors, blitzing last
year’s record of 88,762.
“These record crowds clearly demonstrate that
the Cobb and Co Museum is successfully engaging
with the local community through a vibrant events
program. It’s been a huge year in Toowoomba
with the exhibitions A Room for Wild Animals
and Happy Birthday Play School: Celebrating 50
Years, fun holiday and school programs, artisan
markets and a huge range of heritage trade workshops
just some of the fun activities on offer.”
“I congratulate the Cobb and Co Museum for
its record-breaking achievement and its work in
preserving and telling our unique Australian stories,
supporting cultural tourism opportunities
and offering so many engaging activities for local
community members to enjoy. Through its dynamic
public program this beloved cultural institution
is delivering on my Government’s Advance
Queensland initiative which aims to foster innovation
across our state.”
“Cobb+Co’s success is a great example of the
importance of our Queensland museums in preserving
the legacies of our past, bringing them to
life for current and future generations and exploring
the possibilities of tomorrow.”
CEO and Director of the Queensland Museum
Network, Professor Suzanne Miller said she was
incredibly proud of the museum’s achievements.
“Our tremendous success is testament to the hard
work and passion of the Cobb+Co staff and the
public’s ongoing support and enthusiasm for traditional
and forgotten trades,” Professor Miller said.
Professor Miller said Toowoomba residents
could expect a continuation of the exciting and
educational programming into the future. We have
aspirations for greater success next year, and with
ongoing support from public and partners I am
confident we will achieve our goals,” she said.
TO THE EDITOR
Kettle? Pot? It’s irrelevant
At the risk of labouring a point, I feel compelled
to claim right of reply to the anonymous letter in
this week’s Herald, 11/7/17, "Is it the pot calling
the kettle black" published in response to my letter
the previous week.
Leaving aside your unnamed correspondent’s
patronising tone, I see no logic in his or her argument.
Exactly where I live is irrelevant. Whether
my block was cleared with a bulldozer before my
house was built is irrelevant too.
It’s what is happening in Highfields now that is
relevant and what will happen from now on.
My fervent hope is for a more enlightened future,
where mature trees and associated vegetation
are seen as assets rather than impediments to development,
and where developers do their genuine
best to protect the natural environment and endangered
wildlife of this beautiful area. - Barbara
