DEAR READERS….
By the time you read this either the Equestrian
Life Championships will be underway or will
have just finished. Who will be our Supremes I
wonder?
We have run these Championships for 16 years
now and continue to get a loyal following every
year but I am sure given the number of shows
popping up with ‘Championship’ style approaches it is
becoming increasingly confusing as a competitor where to attend.
We all have limited budgets so what are your criteria generally for entering
events – would love to hear your views? Is it cost, distance, classes,
location, venue, qualified, no need to qualify, or something else?
Outside of the Equestrian Life Champs, here’s hoping our region’s
competitors put in a great performance at The Royal Welsh and Royal
International; we shall be following the news and hope to bring you their
results either online or in print.
We love to see new products and innovative ideas. This month, we share
three new launches with you. The Clavi Brace, a revolutionary idea to assist
in the speedy recovery of broken bones; Estride, to help you gauge and
improve your horses’ fitness, and Apt Cavalier, a new clothing range from
a young design graduate from Scotland. Please take a moment to read all
about them in this month’s issue.
round-up
Dressage superstar Valegro
to parade at The Festival of
British Eventing
The world’s greatest ever dressage horse will be making
a ‘star’ appearance at The Festival of British Eventing,
Gatcombe Park on Sunday, 6 August. Valegro who
has risen to a celebrity status far beyond any other
horse in recent history will be parading in hand to
give his fans an opportunity to soak up his electrifying
presence. He officially retired in an emotional send-off
at Olympia, the London International Horse Show in
December 2016 and since then has been making special
appearances at events around the country – which he
loves!
Visitors to The Festival on Sunday 6 August will
also have the chance to meet Valegro in his stable
by the main arena. So, don’t miss out on the perfect
opportunity to ‘pat’ the dressage superstar and even
pose for a ‘selfie’ with him.
Book your tickets now and look forward to an excellent
weekend at The Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe
Park in Gloucestershire. Visit www.gatcombe-horse.co.uk
SAMPSON HITS THE
HIGH NOTES AGAIN
“A brilliant trainer
competing at world-class
level – it’s a huge privilege
to attend,” said an
attendee at international
showjumper Matthew
Sampson’s latest exclusive
Masterclass for Stubbing
Court Training Ltd
(SCT)’s apprentices and
employers.
International showjumper
Matthew Sampson, who
made the headlines
recently for “singing his
way” into an invitation
to compete at Bolesworth
and who won Hickstead’s
Speed Derby last month,
has always been a great
supporter of Stubbing
Court Training Ltd (SCT)’s
equine Apprenticeship
programme, and is
currently employing three
SCT apprentices at his own
yard.
His second SCT
Masterclass of the year,
at Parklands EC near
Sheffield on 14 July,
was another “hit”. He
taught 10 groups of SCT
apprentices and employers
of varying standards and
experience, and every
single one finished with
broad smiles.
Sampson said: “It was
another great day working
with the Stubbing Court
Training Ltd team. It’s
brilliant to see all the
riders enjoying their day
and improving. The SCT
scheme is a wonderful
opportunity for young,
enthusiastic equestrians to
further their careers, and
I cannot recommend SCT
highly enough.”
SCT is Britain’s leading
provider of apprentices to
the equestrian industry.
The apprenticeship
scheme offers young
people the chance to learn
in a hands-on, constructive
way while gaining a
valuable qualification –
and earning a wage. SCT’s
outstanding contacts
within the industry mean
that their apprentices and
employers gain unique
access to training with the
best riders and coaches,
which is both inspirational
and encourages higher and
higher standards.
Games Competitions
The Cumberland Farmers’
Hunt (South) Games Team
qualified for the Northern
Zone Final’s after a
spectacular second place at
the Area 2 event in April.
As a warm up for the
Zone Final’s the team
competed at the Bramham
International Horse Trials
against other branches
from Morpeth, Tynedale,
Bramham, Badswarth
and York & Ainsty. They
had two fantastic days of
competition coming 5th,
4th and 3rd. The team of
Holly Veitch on Bubbles,
Jess Chapman on Khan,
Madison Ellis on Paddy,
Emily Watson on Harry
and Mollie Harvey on
Moses, then went onto the
Northern Zone Final’s and
competed against 13 teams
from all over the North
of England, Scotland and
Ireland. The winner or
the Zones takes one of the
converted places at Horse
of the Year Show, which is
held each year at the NEC
in Birmingham.
Eglinton Branch of The
Pony Club from Scotland
took this honour with
Morpeth coming a
close 2nd. CFHS came
a fantastic 6th. CFHS
also took 3rd place in the
‘Tack and Turnout’. After
a shaky start they them
made five finals coming
second in two; the very
technical ‘Litter Race’
where each rider has to
pick up a plastic bottle
from the floor with a stick
and transport the bottle
to a bin all at a very fast
gallop and also the ‘Five
Flag Race’ where each
rider takes a flag, gallops
to the end of the arena
places the flag in a cone
and picks up another flag
to hand to the next rider.
Their other finals came in
the Pole Race, Tack Box
and Pryamid. The team
will carry on training in
the hope of picking up
one of the two remaining
HOYS places which are
decided at the Pony Club
Championships in August
at Cholmondeley Castle.
In preparation for this
they will be competing the
Lowther Show on August
12th and 13th. Team
Trainer Fiona Veitch will
be perfecting techniques at
the next practices before
these championships.
Hannah’s Willberry Wonder Pony To Be
Official Charity At Olympia, The London
International Horse Show 2017
Olympia, The London International
Horse Show is delighted to announce
Hannah’s Willberry Wonder Pony as
the event’s official charity for 2017.
Founded by the late Hannah Francis,
a successful young event rider, when
diagnosed with a rare bone cancer,
the charity aims to support vital
research into osteosarcoma, together
with granting Willberry’s Wishes
to seriously ill people with the aim
of enriching their lives through
equestrian experiences. Hannah
was so touched by the generosity of
many in the equestrian world who
allowed her to do likewise, and was
determined to be able to do the same
for others.
Supporting Hannah’s legacy, the
charity has continued to grow and
capture the hearts of the equestrian
community, raising £750,000 in public
donations within a year of becoming
an official charity.
The charity has received an
extraordinary amount of support from
the equestrian world, particularly the
Dressage and Eventing community,
including Olympic Dressage star
and charity patron, Carl Hester, and
International Eventer, Ben Hobday.
Hobday completed the cross-country
phase of Badminton Horse Trials in
2016 accompanied by the charity
mascot, Willberry. Kitty King is the
charity’s third patron and has been
immensely supportive.
Organisers of Olympia, The London
International Horse Show, are proud
to be supporting such a fantastic
charity that is cherished by so many
riders, and equestrian fans alike. The
partnership will help raise the profile
to a greater audience, and reach the
hearts of many more.
Show producer, Simon Brookes-Ward
said: “Hannah’s Willberry Wonder
Pony is a great charity that has drawn
together so many through a common
interest. We hope that the partnership
can benefit this cause greatly, not only
through increased awareness, but also
in terms of fundraising and granting
Willberry’s Wishes.”
Charity trustee, Miles Toulson-
Clarke, said: “Working with Olympia
is an important opportunity for us
to be able to connect with the wider
equestrian audience, extending to
the Show Jumping world. Hannah
would be simply amazed to see the
prominence her charity has achieved
and this partnership will enable us to
continue growing in order to support
those like Hannah, and to further the
support of vital research.”
Bartle Wows At SCTs ‘Winning Ways’ Seminar
The eventing world’s “man of the moment”,
Christopher Bartle, gave an exceptional
presentation at Stubbing Court Training Ltd
(SCT)’s second “Winning Ways” seminar on
Wednesday, 28 June at the Van Dyk Hotel,
Chesterfield.
Christopher, the new coach to the British
eventing team, spoke on a subject close
to his heart: “What makes an outstanding
coaching session?” His talk was one of four
superb presentations at the seminar for
Chesterfield-based training company SCT’s
apprentices and employers.
Christopher was followed by an excellent
discussion by Lewis Smith MRCVS, a partner at Rossdales
Veterinary Surgeons, on airway problems in horses.
And after lunch, the British Equestrian Federation’s
Richard Waterhouse gave a fascinating talk on using
social media marketing to promote a business. The day
concluded a session on employment law and health and
safety by Clive Oliver of Peninsula.
“This really was an amazing opportunity
to learn from world-class professionals
who are passionate about sharing their
knowledge,” said SCT’s Belinda Turner.
“The feedback from those who attended
has been brilliant – everyone went away
feeling inspired and having learnt a lot. We
are grateful to Christopher, Lewis, Richard
and Clive for fitting us into their very busy
schedules.”
One attendee noted: “SCT gives both its
apprentices and its staff such incredible
access to people like Christopher and Lewis,
who are at the very top of their game.”
The “Winning Ways” seminar is part of the leading
equestrian training company’s commitment to providing
its associates with the best opportunities to learn from
the top professionals in the horse world and is in addition
to SCT’s celebrated Masterclass Series.
Tina braced herself for
early return to action
Injured Nottinghamshire event rider Tina Canton is putting her early
return to competition down to a game-changing orthopaedic body
brace and arm protector.
Just three weeks after a
punishing rotational fall
on 3rd June left her with
a badly broken collarbone,
she was back in the saddle
riding ten horses a day and
planning to compete within
five weeks of her accident.
And that’s exactly what she
achieved, turning out three
horses at Buckminster Park
on 8/9 July.
She went through dressage,
show jumping and cross
country with two entries
and then withdrew her
third ride after dressage.
None were in the ribbons
but for Tina the weekend
was a winner! “Just to
be back competing was
absolutely brilliant,” she
said.
“I would say that’s a
fortnight quicker than
I would otherwise have
dared. I am immensely
grateful to have found this
brace and I can thoroughly
recommend it.
She chose to get her
fracture surgically plated
after painful experience of
ignoring a previous break.
Her other collarbone,
fractured 25 years, became
deformed and has resulted
in a weakened and painful
shoulder.
“I learned my lesson the
hard way and decided
straightaway that I wanted
to get this fracture operated
on,” said Tina of Tinderbox
Sport Horses.
But it’s the support, safety
and security she got from
the ClaviBrace gilet brace –
championed by top surgeon
Professor Angus Wallace
- that she says has speeded
her return to action.
She’s also the first
person to wear the same
manufacturer’s new
breakthrough ‘Bayley
Upper-armour’ shoulder
protector - named after Mr
Ian Bayley, the shoulder
surgeon specialist who
designed it.
It attaches to and works
with the gilet to control
the arm within an active
but safe range, preventing
movement which could
potentially damage the
shoulder.
Her fall at Little Downham
provided the highs and
lows of the sport. Riding
high after a first day
intermediate section win
with Just a Game, Tina
set out cross country
on a novice ride full of
confidence.
At the second element of
a fairly straightforward
obstacle her horse simply
never took off, chested
the fence and turned over,
falling on Tina. “I woke
up in the ambulance on a
spinal board,” says Tina.
The result was a sore
head, ribs and hip and a
collarbone with multiple
fractures.
With a yard full of horses,
staff to co-ordinate and her
horsebox business to run,
she was keen to get back
riding and opted to have
the fracture plated.
She was operated on within
a week and now bears a
handsome scar to prove
it. Plating the splintered
collarbone meant the repair
was fragile and, under
normal circumstances,
would be followed by eight
weeks in a sling.
Not for Tina. “Wearing the
ClaviBrace meant I didn’t
have to wear a sling and
it took the gamble of any
set-backs away for me”, she
said.
“It makes me feel safe and
gave me the confidence
to get back in the saddle
sooner. The way it’s
designed holds you from
the hips through your back
to your shoulders, and it
looks just like a normal
waistcoat, only more
stylish.
“I wear the gilet and arm
protector anytime I go near
a horse.”
“I am on the yard before
my girls arrive, so I need to
be able to tack up. The arm
guard allows me enough
movement to get a bridle
Wearing the
ClaviBrace meant
I didn’t have to wear
a sling and it took
the gamble of any
set-backs away
for me
on, for instance, without
fear of going too far and
dislodging anything.”
Tina is no stranger to
injury. As well as the early
collarbone break, she
suffered a freak fall two
years from a young horse
(“a four year old who didn’t
like a puddle and turned
itself inside out”).
Falling awkwardly left her
with a tibia plateau fracture
- basically a dislocated
knee and the femur going
through her tibia!
She had two weeks
in Queens Med, two
operations and intensive
rehabilitation - including
a visit to Oaksey House in
Lambourn, the specialist
rehab facility managed by
the Injured Jockeys Fund.
“I went on their zerogravity
machine they
have there. They have an
amazing mentality. Never
think you cannot get back
on a horse,” Tina said.
She also had access
to a mechanical horse
at Nottingham Trent
University, where she has
taught equine students for
17 years, was ‘cantering’
within three weeks and
back riding five months
later.
“I was determined to think
my way through this latest
injury.”
“When you get injured,
you tend to curl up
into the foetal position
psychologically. What
ClaviBrace has done is
get my head back up, feel
confident and better able
to get back to normal.
Tina is now recommending
the gilet to her pupils as a
clever way to enhance their
riding posture, both at her
Newark yard and to her
students at Brackenhurst.
She is a fan of how it
stabilises the pelvis, aligns
the spine and strengthens
the shoulders – delivering
the core strength that all
riders need.
ClaviBrace was developed
by rider and Angel Med
managing director Barbara
Thompson, with the
help of leading surgeons,
after she broke her own
collarbone.
Her gilet brace has key
hidden components which
combine to elongate a
broken collarbone, stop
pain and stabilise the
fracture to encourage
better quality, faster
natural healing.
Barbara said: “We have had
fantastic results with those
who don’t want or need
surgery and I am delighted
to see now how we can
also help those who, for
different reasons, choose
or are recommended to
have their fracture plated.”
ClaviBrace is patent
protected and
trademarked. It can be
fitted at Angel Med’s
Grantham manufacturing
base, at the Corby Glen
Market Cross medical
practice, and through
physio Helen Lavelle in
Cambridge or at the Spine
Plus specialist clinic at 136
London’s Harley Street.
horse fitness
Is my Horse
FIT ENOUGH?
By Victoria Caley, Stride Innovations Limited
We all know how important
your horse’s fitness is, but
what is fitness? There are
many ways to tell if a horse is fit, how
long how fast or far the horse can
go without winding itself, how long
they can school for or even how many
jumps they can do per training session.
The fact is that fitness in horses is
relative – just like in human athletes.
If you try and judge a marathon runner
by their ability to run 100 meters
then they will not appear fit. It is
the same with our equine athletes; a
showjumper is not going to be able
to complete a 30km endurance ride
with the same effectiveness as an
endurance horse.
When assessing your horse’s fitness
there are many factors to take into
account. You want your horse’s
fitness to match your goal; be it
hacking, competing or just being able
to enjoy your horse. Before starting
fitness work it is a good idea to give
your horse a health check. Checking
vaccination and farrier records and
getting the vet out for a check-up
would be a good idea – especially with
an older horse.
Developing a purpose built
training programme is a
very good idea, building
week on week to
improve your horse’s
fitness. You can
tailor an effective
plan with your
trainer – this is
the first step to
reaching that
final goal. You
want to develop an
individual plan for
your horse depending
on age, current fitness
level, any previous injuries
and previous fitness levels. A
horse who has previously been
very fit may not take as long to regain
that fitness. The main aim of a fitness
plan is to minimise the risk of injury
and whilst getting to the optimal
performance for your goal. You
want to increase your horse’s fitness
gradually to allow your horse’s body to
adjust to the increased workload – if
you move too quickly you increase the
chance of tissue damage.
But how do you know if your
programme is working? Well there
are many different ways to do this.
You can keep track of each session
by hand, how the horse felt through
the session and how easily the horse
coped with the session. There are
other options available. For example,
phone apps which can track the
horses speed and movement during
sessions, logging these keeping
a record of them for comparison.
Fitness tracker worn by riders can also
be used to track sessions but give very
limited information on the horse’s
way of going.
Developing a
purpose built
training programme
is a very good idea,
building week on
week to improve
your horse’s
fitness
There is now a new breed of fitness
tracker – especially for horses;
with Estride being the newest and
probably most thorough home Equine
biomechanics system currently on
the market. Estride is a rider friendly
fitness tracker with unique system
of tracking your riding sessions. It
health
Within the body there are
various types of muscles
performing a wide variety of
tasks. There are:
SMOOTH MUSCLES which function
automatically and surround all the
internal tissues and organs. These
are responsible for pushing food
through the digestive system and
are responsible for the physical
control of the bladder and
bowel.
Understanding
Movement
MUSCLES
CARDIAC MUSCLE which
co-ordinates propulsion
of blood in and out of
the heart and,
SKELETAL MUSCLE. This controls,
co-ordinates and creates movement.
They form the largest tissue mass
in the horse’s body. As in ourselves
these muscles can be prone to strain,
become stiff and sore, become tight
or weak.
There are approximately 700 muscles
in the horses. Their function is to
support the skeleton, maintain
joint stability and control range of
movement.
Muscles work in pairs. As one muscle
contracts, another relaxes. As no body
part is moved by one muscle alone,
joints are operated by groups of pairs.
These then combine into chains
Strong healthy and well
defined muscles enable
the horse to look good,
feel good and perform
with ease, accuracy
and flair. This improves
posture, power, balance
and precision, makes
the horse gallop faster,
jump higher and sustain
pace for longer, all with
a reduced risk of injury.
which co-ordinate to create smooth
movement.
The extensor chain makes up the
topline. It is comprised of the muscles
above the spine and behind the hip. It
is involved in all forward movement,
thrust, expression and ground
coverage. Hill work is particularly
useful in strengthening the extensor
chain.
Two important chains are the extensor and flexor chains.
The flexor chain makes up the bottom
line. These muscles lie underneath the
spine, in front of the hip and include
the abdominal muscles. These form
part of the ‘core’ muscles which are
18 August 2017 Equestrian Life

vital in supporting and maintaining
correct posture of the back.
Engagement exercises, for example
half halts and walking over raised
poles help to tone and strengthen the
flexor chain of muscles.
These two chains combine to form a
circle of muscles which allow the body
to support the weight of the rider
and gracefully orchestrate smooth
balanced movement and equilibrium.
Pain of discomfort in any muscle
within a chain can manifest itself
elsewhere in the body, often far
removed from the original source.
For example soreness or tension in
the lumbar region just behind the
saddle will affect other muscles in
the chain and cause deterioration
in suppleness, stride length and
posture.
CORE STABILITY
Core stability provides the strength
and co-ordination for control,
balance, posture and carrying the
weight of the rider. It can improve
self carriage, enhance performance
and reduce the risk of injury.
Ridden exercises to strengthen the
core focus on engagement of the
hindlimbs to lighten the forehand.
These include frequent transitions
and half halts encouraging the
horse to collect and push from
behind and pole work using raised
trot and canter poles.
Backing up and walking over raised
poles are excellent in hand exercises for
strengthening the thoracic sling and core
muscles.
Core muscles include the thoracic
sling , abdominal muscles,
pelvis stabilisers and deep
vertebral muscles.
As the horse has to push evenly from behind,
hill work is an excellent way to strengthen
the core muscles.
This article is not to
discuss the finer
points of prepurchase
vetting’s but
more what is required of
the person selling the horse
and the expectations of the
purchaser. I am discussing
the 5 stage procedure as the
2 stage is too limiting and is
rarely recommended.
“The aim of the prepurchase
examination is
to carry out a thorough
and complete veterinary
examination of the chosen
horse and to identify and
attempt to assess those
factors of a veterinary
nature that may affect the
horses’ suitability for its
intended use, so that the
prospective purchaser may
make an informed decision
as to whether or not to
proceed with their chosen
purchase”
OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE
Must have the passport for
that horse: No passport = No
Vetting
Identification is of the
upmost importance; no
certificate will be issued
without it.
THE SELLER OR VENDOR
OF THE HORSE
The horse must be examined
initially in its stable in which
it should have preferably
been housed overnight or at
least several hours prior to
the exam. The horse should
not have been exercised
that day. There needs to be
a dark box to facilitate the
eye exam. We need a level
surface, non-slippery please,
to stand the horse square,
walk and trot up in hand
and a flexion test so about
30 meters is necessary.
Preferably not on a main
road and an area of hard
smooth ground to lunge the
horse on a small circle on
both reins. The animal must
be able to be handled – in
order to examine the mouth,
ears, skin, limbs and feet – if
this is not possible then
we have to mention these
failings on the form.
The feet should be in good
order – no missing shoes!
But better older shoes than
newly shod because we get
more Information from the
way that the shoe has been
warn.
A suitable area for the horse
to be exercised at walk, trot,
canter and gallop. This may
be a suitable-sized schooling
area, or a field – especially
for the galloping.
The exercise may be ridden,
lunged, free or even driven.
The idea is to raise the
heart and breathing rate to
detect abnormalities - not to
exercise the horse into the
ground.
A blood sample is routinely
taken as a PPE 5 Stage, so
be prepared for the Vet
to take a sample of blood
and the vendor will need
to fill in and sign a form to
confirm that the blood has
come from this particular
horse and that it has not
received medication in the
last 30 days. The vendor
will be asked about any
previous problems or
illnesses including surgical
operations eg. colic or wind,
any vices or management
problems.
THE PURCHASER
Must make clear to the
vet what he or she wants
the horse for. A horse for
top level showing has
different requirements than
horse health
Pre Purchase Examination
a weekend hack. But be
realistic and sensible about
this. Any concerns already
found by the purchaser
must be made clear to the
Vet so that they can be
properly considered and
commented on.
It is great to have the
purchaser “on site” for the
vetting but this is not always
possible. So make sure there
is a phone number that will
be answered, so if there is a
serious problem we can talk
to you.
Any examination is
limited and it is strictly
a clinical assessment not
an indication of future
performance or capability. It
is limited to finding on that
day and at that time, not
even the next day.
The PPE may or may not
uncover any vices eg.
cribbing, wind sucking,
weaving or box walking.
The horses previous
achievements eg. winnings
are nothing to do with
the vetting and must be
checked by the purchaser.
Neither is the price of the
animal – This is irrelevant
to the vetting.
After the PPE the vet
may recommend further
investigations such
as x-rays, ultrasound,
endoscopic examinations.
The results of these will
help to give information in
addition to that gained from
the clinical examination.
Sometimes insurance
companies will ask for
these.
TOP TIPS for a Healthy
Stable Environment
In this issue David Jeffrey’s of Stable Shield, The Leaders in Equine Biosecurity
offers advice and tips on keeping your stable a bacteria-free zone
It is crucial that horses
are kept in a clean
environment as it assists
with their respiratory
system and overall
wellbeing.
Therefore it is extremely
important to take every
possible precaution against
the spread of bugs and
bacteria.
Here are a few top tips to
ensure your stable provides
the best environment it can
for your horse:
NEW
Anti-Bacterial Stable Paint
Independently Tested and Approved
Stable Shield:
• Waterbased
• Hard Wearing &
Durable
• Easy to apply
• Long lasting – the
active ingredients last
up to 5 years
• Available in white,
black and clear
Your stable is a good place
to start and a thorough
clean is a great way to
provide a hygienic
environment which is
healthier for your horse.
Clean stables thoroughly on
a regular basis. Remember
that the more often horses
are kept in stables, the more
they will need cleaning.
Start by lifting and
removing any rubber
matting and thoroughly
wash them using a
stiff brush, water and
Suitable for:
• Steel
• Most plastics
• Concrete
• Breeze blocks
• Brick
• Wood
Areas of use:
• Newly built yards
• Stables
• Tack rooms
• Feed rooms
• Hay barns
“Anti-Bacterial paint for your Stables”
That prevents the growth and spread of harmful bacteria by up to 99.8%
disinfectant. Then do the
same for the floor of the
stable and also the walls
and doors.
Use a strong brush to sweep
the floor. Use the brush to
knock down spider’s webs
and dust as well.
A pressure washer is ideal
for lifting dirt and grime
and giving a powerful water
supply to produce a great
finish. Let the floor and
mats dry and the stable air
before replacing the mats.
Add new bedding to replace
any that has been removed.
If there is thick rubber
matting on the stable floor,
bedding can be thinner.
Periodically, you should
completely strip the
stable. You may want to
put down some odour
control solution or stable
disinfectant. Make sure the
floor is dry before you add
the new bedding.
Clean your horse’s water
and feed buckets, removing
old food and water and
scrubbing the buckets.
Keep on top of small jobs
like squeaky doors, loose
bolts and flickering lights.
Simple repairs will keep
you abreast of overall
maintenance issues.
Remember to put your
tools away so they don’t
create a trip hazard.
Next look at your tack
room and if necessary give
it a clean and tidy up. It is
a good idea to sort out all
of your rugs and send the
winter ones for washing
and then bag them up to
put in storage.
Your equipment may need
a good sort through as well,
so that items that will not
be used throughout the
summer can be washed and
put away ready for next
winter and vice versa.
Take out your lighter rugs
and ensure they are all in
good working order and
ready to use. If you will be
competing this summer,
check your kit and make
sure you have everything
you need and all is in good
condition.
If there is a list of
emergency contact details,
make sure that everything
is correct and alter if
necessary-if you don’t
have a list, it is very wise to
make one.
Feed rooms and hay stores
can always do with a good
tidy up so give them a
good sweep and remove
any cobwebs. Check
that all feed bins are in
good working order and
regularly check rodent
traps if you have them.
If you have any plants or
grass around the yard,
make sure they look smart
by weeding any beds
and mowing the grass.
Hanging baskets with
dead plants in should be
emptied and potted up
with new ones.
For a long-term solution,
use new Stable Shield
Anti-Bacterial paint on
walls and ceilings, as it
helps prevent the spread
of bacteria by up to 99.8%.
It is ideal for all yards
including stables, tack
rooms, feed rooms, newly
built yards and hay barns.
TRICKLE NET
Transformations
So, the girth won’t go up as many holes as usual… or perhaps it’s not
even going up at all and you’ve recently swapped to a bigger one. No
need to strain your eyes trying to spot your equine friend out in the
paddock, you can spot that big old cresty neck a mile off. The mare looks
like she’s been secretly raiding the feed bin for the past few months, and
the gelding is starting to look like HE’S in foal. But don’t despair, Trickle
Net is here to help.
This simple but effective 25mm small holed net is the perfect weight loss
tool for those porky ponies and hippo horses. Ensuring that forage intake
is slowed enough to reduce calorie consumption whilst mimicking grazing
and busting boredom - a real plus for those on weight loss regimes who
require restricted turnout. Made from the toughest 4mm rot proof braided
polyethylene woven around a strong core, these nets are tough cookies
too, excellent for serial net trashers!
Not convinced?... here are some success stories from horse owners
who have used the Trickle Net to manage their horses’ weight.
Pepsi's Story
Anna Larsen's pony, Pepsi, was
diagnosed with laminitis and needed
a feeding solution to provide him with
less forage to support weight loss, but
without leaving him hungry to cause
stress and add to his problems.
Said Anna: "Since buying the Trickle Net
it has helped with Pepsi's recovery and
also kept his weight down.
Diesel's Story
Diesel, owned by Becky Reece is a known hay net destroyer.
Said Becky: "I have to say the Trickle Net is amazing and is still in one
piece compared to the standard small holed nets you can get.
"Despite using my two Trickle Nets every
day they are still in perfect condition.
Thank-you Trickle Net. Pepsi is now a lot
happier and we are now out competing
in local unaffiliated dressage shows.”
"With a standard haynet, Diesel would finish his hay off in an hour,
leaving him hungry over night or he would end up getting more food,
but with the Trickle Net there is almost always a little left in the morning
and he is now a much slimmer, healthier and happier pony!"
Maxwell's Story
For further information on the Trickle Net
products please visit: www.tricklenet.co.uk
And the final story is Louise Pritchett's horse, Maxwell, who was 700+kg before
and thanks to extra work and the Trickle Net he now weighs in at 525kg.
Maxwell used to be a driving horse and pulled a sledge across frozen lakes in
winter in the Netherlands. Now he lives in the UK with Louise and competes at
Prelim/Novice level.
Said Louise: "The Trickle Net has helped in managing his eating time. It now
doesn't take Maxwell 20 minutes to finish off his hay, it takes him so much
longer.”
Using Modern Light/
PHOTOTHERAPY
Wound healing - pre and post surgically; musculoskeletal
rehabilitation – keep your horse in peak performance
The modality of Light Therapy /
Phototherapy is continuing to
evolve as modern technology
advances. In particular as the
application demand for LEDs (Light
Emitting Diodes) increases.
There are different sources of lowpower
light namely: LASER (Light
amplification by stimulated emission),
Infrared and LED, emitting incoherent
light.
The main difference between laser
light and LED is that lasers offer
a coherent light beam: it does not
spread out, and stays as a tightly
pinpoint beam.
Whereas LED light is a silicon
microchip with added substances
each of which release a different
wavelength (colour) of light when
electrically stimulated producing a
non-coherent (spread out) beam.
Photizo Vetcare harnesses the
development in LED (light emitting
diode) technology following the
success of NASA LED research and
published recommended doses from
WALT (World Association of Laser
Therapy).
The Vetcare has been specifically
developed with high output LEDs to
ensure a fast delivery, in 31 preprogrammed
doses, of an effective
evidence based dose of light /
Phototherapy.
Many reviewed studies have shown
that LED light can be as effective
as LASER, since both have similar
biological effects with no significant
difference between them.
The cellular response to photostimulation
(photobiomodulation) is
not associated with specific properties
of LASER light such
as a coherent beam
of light.
Studies on the
absorption of light
by the different
constituents of
tissue have led
to wavelength
parameters used in
various phototherapy
devices.
The absorption of
light by cytochrome
c oxidase for ATP
production is
particularly relevant. Photizo’s Vetcare
offers the best parameters for light
absorption which are in the region
of 600-680 (red) and 800 to 850nm
(nanometers) (infra-red).
Doses are measured in joules per area
– mm or cm: the smaller the surface
area of the applicator the higher the
dose. Lasers may therefore apply a
high inhibiting dose to the top layer
of cells, and a lower stimulating dose
deeper to the tissue.
LED sources conversely offer a wider
surface area. Using comparable
parameters provides a stimulating
dose at a deeper cellular level.
Different tissues absorb light to
different degrees, for example
highly vascularised tissue (eg:
muscles) absorb more light than less
vascularised tissue (eg: tendons). Fur
and hair can reduce the penetration of
light, as can dirty or dark pigmented
skin. Also different types of bone
absorb light to different degrees.
Light Therapy / Phototherapy’s
success in aiding post-operative
wound healing
has been well
documented
in South Africa
where the Photizo
hand-held unit has been developed by
Physiotherapist, Marietjie Venter.
Since its launch in 2013 by UK
distributor, Danetre Health,
Photizo Vetcare has proven that its
combination of pulsating red and
infrared light can speed up the natural
wound healing process.
Many Vets, Vet Nurses and animal
healthcare professionals have
embraced the Vetcare’s potential
across a host of musculoskeletal
injuries, atopic skin conditions, and as
a powerful non-invasive tool in wound
management.
Photizo Vetcare creates biological
effects at a cellular level to
stimulate the production of ATP.
Increasing the blood supply to
the wound, reducing swelling and
inflammation, it offers pain relief via
the stimulation of endorphin and
serotonin secretion.
The convenience of this pocket sized
rechargeable treatment tool is perfect
to use on emergency call outs; out
26 August 2017 Equestrian Life

“I believe that Photizo rapidly
improved the healing process
after Nemo’s three procedures”
Photizo Vetcare increases the blood
supply to the wound, reducing
swelling and inflammation, helping
with pain relief via the stimulation of
endorphin and serotonin secretion.
Abi Dean commented: “I believe that
Photizo rapidly improved the healing
process after Nemo’s three procedures.
Not only were the staples removed
within the average time period, but the
Hobday open wound well-exceeded
the rate of healing.
post surgery. It is so simple for those
untrained in light therapy to use in
home care situations.
Carers can accelerate the healing
process in-between appointments
with a vet or physiotherapist.
Treatment with Photizo Vetcare helps
cells function at optimum levels; it
naturally increases the blood and
lymph diameter, promoting the flow of
oxygen and removes any debris from
the wound.
In addition Vetcare stimulates
fibroblast and collagen formation
needed for wound closure. Helping to
control scar tissue, meaning less scar
tissue is formed.
Vetcare’s near Infrared light has also
been shown to increase immune
system functioning. This means that
a local treatment of a wound has a
general immune enhancing effect
helping to prevent any infections.
Using Photizo’s Vetcare there is no
risk to the eyes, and no need to wear
bulky eyewear. Unlike laser light,
which does pose a risk to the eyes and
wearing protective laser goggles is
recommended.
When Eventer, Abi Dean, re-homed an
Irish sports Horse, named Nemo she
couldn’t have imagined the journey to
recovery that this brave horse would
endure.
It’s a testament to the care and
rehabilitation offered by Abi, her
vet, Ali Mead, and of course to Nemo
himself. During his rescue in 2012 he
suffered a severe fall, malnourished
Nemo made a full recovery from a
severed hoof and split knees.
Most recently Nemo has undergone
surgery for three procedures including
full laryngeal tie-back, Hobday and
soft palate cauterisation. Abi is
convinced that his extraordinary
recovery was down to incorporating
Photizo Phototherapy into his
rehabilitation.
Photizo’s Vetcare creates biological
effects at a cellular level to
stimulate the production of ATP, the
cellular energy that is needed for
healing and cellular regeneration.
Despite being advised that the
Hobday would take anything up to
35 days from the date of surgery to
heal, Nemo had been on 20mins of
walking exercise since day 5 of Photizo
treatment, only 14 days after his major
surgery.
As soon as Nemo was receiving
Photizo treatment there was a clear
display in change of personality and
appetite. He began to try to whinny,
his general manner was improved
looking more willing and happy, and
he was maneuvering the neck more.
His appetite changed from one small
bucket of hay 4 times per day to 8kg of
hay 3 x per day fed in extra large bins
at ground level. He displayed no signs
of pain or discomfort while eating
from day three.
Most horses spend a minimum of
120 days on strict box rest after this
surgery. Nemo was given the all
clear by Ali Mead, FEI approved vet
DENTISTRY
Conditions of the
CHEEK TEETH
Heather Urquhart BVMS CertAVP (Equine Dentistry) BAEDT MRCVS
The premolar and
molar teeth of the
horse are commonly
grouped together and
classed simply as the 'cheek
teeth'. These teeth are
responsible for masticating
(chewing and grinding)
food prior to it entering
the digestive tract - if food
isn't chewed properly then
your horse will struggle to
utilise it effectively, which
may lead to weight loss,
diarrhoea and an expensive
feed bill! Cheek tooth
disease can also contribute
to episodes of choke or
colic, and lead to issues
with ridden performance
and behaviour.
Many conditions can
affect these teeth, some of
which will be discussed in
this article and some next
month.
ANATOMY
This was covered in more
detail a few months ago,
but the most important
points to remember are:
Adult horses have 6 upper
and 6 lower cheek teeth
on each side, all 6 of which
should be packed tightly
together to form one
functional grinding unit.
Teeth are fully formed from
a young age, erupt into
the mouth continuously
throughout life, and are
worn down by grinding
food. In the wild, the
rate of eruption roughly
matches the rate of wear;
however in domestic horses
fed better quality forage
and grass eruption often
exceeds the rate of wear
resulting in some problems.
The upper jaw is wider
than the lower jaw, and the
lower jaw naturally curves
up towards the back of
the mouth, which is more
pronounced in some breeds
than others.
Long and narrow oral cavity
The mouth is long and
narrow, often with little
space present between the
upper teeth and the cheeks,
and the lower teeth and the
tongue especially towards
the back of the mouth.
SPECIFIC CONDITIONS
Sharp Enamel Points
Sharp enamel points are
by far the most commonly
encountered cheek teeth
diagram showing location
of cheek teeth
Lacerated cheek caused by sharp enamel points
problem. These points
usually form on the
outside (cheek side) of
the upper teeth, and the
inside (tongue side) of
the lower teeth due to the
combination of differing
upper and lower jaw widths
and continuous tooth
eruption.
If not treated, sharp points
can cause:
28 August 2017 Equestrian Life

normal transverse ridges
be performed every 6-12
months.
Excessive transverse ridges
Ridging of the cheek
teeth is normal, and is
necessary for efficient
grinding of food. However,
in some cases these ridges
become overly large. If
not addressed these can
cause food to pack more
deeply into diastemata (see
next month), and cause
abnormal wear to opposing
teeth.
Excessive rasping of
the grinding surface of
cheek teeth, however,
is contraindicated - if a
large amount of tooth is
routinely removed every
6-12 months then the
lifespan of the teeth (and
therefore the horse) could
be significantly reduced,
and the horses ability to
chew effectively may be
reduced. The grinding
surface should never feel
totally flat at the end of a
dental treatment.
Deciduous caps
Caps (baby, or milk,
teeth) are lost between
approximately 2.5 years
and 4 years of age. In most
cases they will be shed
with no intervention, and
this process often goes
unnoticed. However in
some cases these caps
may get stuck, and cause
the horse to quid (drop
food) or even refuse to eat.
In other cases food may
become trapped around
the retained tooth, causing
the surrounding gum
to become diseased and
painful, or even damage
the erupting adult tooth.
Fragments of cap may be
found imbedded in the gum
below an adult tooth, or
between teeth - again these
can cause infection.
Loose caps are usually
easy to remove during a
routine dental examination.
Retained caps that aren't
loose can be more difficult
to remove, and may require
xrays to confirm the
problem. Horses should
be sedated to remove any
teeth or caps that aren't
already loose, as removal is
likely to be painful.
If you think your horse may
be suffering from dental
disease, please contact a vet
(ideally with an interest/
further qualifications in
equine dentistry) or a
qualified equine dental
technician to arrange a
check up.
diagram showing where sharp
enamel points form due to
differing widths of upper and
lower jaws
• Inconsistent contact
• Inefficient chewing/food
utilisation
• Painful ulceration to
cheeks and tongue
• Headshaking
• Resistance when ridden
Reduction of sharp points is
straightforward and readily
achieved in most cases.
Power or manually operated
instruments can be used.
Sedation may be required
to properly access the teeth
right at the back of the
mouth, especially if painful
ulcers are present.
Tack
&Turnout
for the Show Ring
When taking part in Ridden Showing Classes,
correct tack and turnout are of huge importance!
The rules about tack and
turnout in showing
do vary depending on
the class in which you are
competing in. However, all
exhibits should be clean and
immaculately-presented.
All show horses in for
production at Joanne Shaw
Equestrian are bathed fully
a few days prior to the show
allowing the horses coat to
settle. Depending on the
time of year would dictate
the level of rugging but as
a minimum all would sport
a HorzeHoods Hood and
summer sheet. The hood
helps to keeps the mane frizz
free and on the correct side
(We also apply the hood after
plaiting to help keep them
in place), Whilst the sheet
keeps body hair dust free and
sleek. - With the exception
of natives types, Mountain &
Moorlands which must be left
in a close to natural state and
cobs (Who’s manes must be
hogged), all other horses and
ponies must also be plaited
up - We plait the morning
of the show to minimise the
risk of the horse rubbing out
the plaits, Tails should be
trimmed to Approx 2 inches
below the hock and pulled
to create a neat profile,
Quarter marks can also be
applied to enhance a horse’s
hindquarters.
Show day preparation for the
ring Incudes applying Oil to
the hooves and highlighting
key areas such as eyes and
muzzle along with a coat
shine to the body, For horses
with a lot of white on them
we always carry Chalk
powder and stain remover in
our show day preparation kit.
In this article, we will cover
the correct tack to wear for
each showing class and some
top tips for turning your
horse or pony out for the
ring.
WORKING HUNTER - TOP TIP
Try not to over gadget or bit your horse or pony,
Judges like to see a precise controlled round with horse
and rider working in harmony. You need to be able to
control your horse without a struggle but they must also
be happy and comfortable, less is more.
PRODUCT TIPS
We highly recommend the Smart Grooming product range for all aspects of show preparation and get
ours from the north west distributor Callisto Equestrian ; the Smart grooming range of products have
been designed to enhance and give a really superb final finish to your horse or pony.
All have been tried and tested thoroughly and have not been found to react even
with very sensitive skinned animals.
All of the products are fantastic but we have a few personal favourites, We use The
Lavender Shampoo to bath a few days before the show, Show Make up and Super
Shine for Highlighting *Super shine is a very versatile product it can also be used
as a rinse after bathing , Or apply to the mane/ Tail to control fly away hairs and any
frizz, It is designed to repel dust and dirt so really helps to keep your horse spotless.
On the day we always carry a bottle of Coat Sheen and Polar white stain remover in
our basket for that last minute sparkle or stain you need to remove quickly.
SADDLES
All show horses are best shows in a straight cut saddle.
Not only does this emphasise the shoulder but also helps
open the shoulder allowing the horse to move more
freely thus showing of their paces.
It is acceptable in working
hunter classes to have a
slightly more forward cut
saddle, A working hunter cut
is preferable as this offers
the best of both worlds by
supporting the rider over
fences but still showing off the
horse’s shoulder.
My favourite show saddles
are ‘Black Country Saddles’.
They have a variety of saddles
in their range, The Classic,
Hartley, Poppy and Working
Hunter. They all sit very
neatly on the horse, With
the exception of the Working
Hunter all offer a straight cut
finish to open up the front
and the low cantle helps provide a flatter seat. The close
profile of these saddles helps to show off and enhance
the overall picture. Black Country Saddles are made
with a subtle knee roll to help with the rider’s position,
lowering your leg meaning you sit deeper in the saddle.
These saddle’s also have the added bonus of being
extremely comfy for both horse and rider, some showing
classes have a lot of entries and you can be in the ring
for a number of hours so comfort is very important. A
comfy horse and rider are always going to give a better
performance (We have found some other brands to be
quite hard and un comfortable)
The Black Country working hunter range offers amore
forward cut knee area , This saddle still provides you with
elegant finish but will give the rider more support over
fences.
Finding a bit that both you and your horse are happy
with is very important, Judges do not wish to see a
battle to stop nor do they wish to see over bitted horse
un happy with riders contact.
‘Any bit in the wrong hands is a bad bit’
DANIEL PARK
TACK - TOP TIPS
If your horse has a small head or a larger head adjust
the width of your noseband to give the illusion your
horse has a smaller or bigger head than he really does.
See photo insert of horse , This horse has a roman
head so the owner has tacked appropriately in him up
in a larger noseband to help disuse that.
If your horse is slightly long in the back get a numnah
with an added roll for behind the back of the saddle
which can give the illusion your horse is shorter
through the back.
THE RIDER
A WORD FROM THE JUDGES
‘LESS IS MORE’ Daniel Park talks about how he
doesn’t like too much bling on a show ponies
browband. ‘When a horse comes Into the ring it
should be about the horse - not the bling’
Rules/Guidelines also apply to riders. Shirts with a tie
and tie pin , Cream, beige or canary jodhpurs , long, black
leather riding boots are the correct dress for all classes.
Children should wear short brown jodhpur boots with
clips. To complete the look we suggest all riders (other
than lead rein) should carry a cane.
Riders taking part in native or Mountain & Moorland
classes should wear tweed jackets – Riding hats should be
to the current standard and either navy, brown or green
(Chose a colour to complement your horse and choice
of tweed). Tweed jackets are also correct for hunter and
riding horse classes, If you are showing a hack or show
pony you are expected to wear a navy jacket and hat.
Young Showjumper Selected for European Championships
Teenage showjumping
star Holly Truelove
will be representing
Great Britain at the European
Showjumping Championships.
Sponsored by Lincoln-based
building firm Truelove
Property & Construction,
Holly (14), from Worlaby, near
Brigg and her 11-year-old
horse Golly Girl will compete
in The Children and Junior
European Championships in
Slovakia.
The competition will take
place between the 8th and
13th August in Samorin,
Slovakia at the x-bionic
equestor sphere.
The 14-year-old is no stranger
to riding with the Great Britain
team as this will be the second
time in recent weeks that she
has taken part in an overseas
competition.
Only last month, Holly helped
Great Britain achieve a thirdplace
finish in the Children’s
Grand Prix at the Dutch
Youngster Festival in the
Netherlands.
Holly said: “I can’t believe
I have been selected for the
European Championships! I
can’t wait to go and jump, we
have an amazing team and I’m
just so excited!”
Barrie Truelove, Holly’s father
and owner of Golly Girl and a
Director of Truelove Property,
said: “It’s great news! The
waiting is finally over and after
months of planning it’s so nice
to see that all the hard work
has paid off.
“Holly and Golly Girl have had
a brilliant year so far and Golly
has been amazing. She’s been
answering every instruction
which has got Holly onto the
team.
“Holly is very confident and
has an unrivalled bond with
the horse. At this level, both of
them need trust. This is why
it’s important to remember
that it’s not always about
the jumping, but also about
getting the horses there safe
and fit, ready for competition.
“We recently attended the
kitting out day and it was
great fun trying out the team
clothing and having all the
photographs taken. It also
gave the team a chance to
get together again to reflect
on this huge achievement.
We can’t thank NAF, British
Showjumping and LeMieux
enough for all their support!”
AN EMOTIONAL
Roller Coaster
dressage
This month has seen Lara represent Great Britain and also
experience a first for her - being eliminated half way through
a test. Read on to find out more…
It has been an enjoyable month of
training, competing and socialising!
It started off with a night away
and a trip to The Equerry Bolesworth
International Horse Show to watch the
dressage classes on the Thursday with
my great friends, Vicky and Kate. We
very much enjoyed watching and not
riding, followed by a lovely evening meal.
Jessica Martin Junior (we have two Jess
Martins working for us!) and I headed
off to Sheepgate Premier League with
Bodyguard and competed in the Prix St
Georges class and the Inter 1 on both
days. With a win on the second day and
four great scores, I am pleased to say I
have now qualified for the Nationals as
the win is an automatic qualification.
Annabelle has celebrated her first
birthday this month too and is now a
proper toddler. It feels strange that she
doesn’t feel baby-like any more and
loves her riding and now, thanks to Kate
Brown, has her first riding hat and pony
on the way....watch this space!
I was thrilled to receive our GB call up
for Hartpury. Out of the 92 names on the
list they could only pick 18 and I was to
be one of them, although on seeing my
name against the professionals, I felt like
I needed to up my game a little!
We decided to go down a few days before
and do a Prix St Georges in the Premier
League classes as a warm up as generally
Bodyguard gets more confident the more
he does in the arena.
This was to haunt me for a while and
didn’t work in my favour. Unfortunately
for me, on movement five the bell rang.
Knowing I had not gone wrong, I walked
down to C to be informed by the judge
that he thought Bodyguard was lame, so
eliminated me.
For the first time in a long time, I burst
One for the family album.
into tears as I didn’t feel any lameness at
all, in fact he was feeling the best ever.
Although I agreed there were a few
balance issues on the turns, there
certainly wasn’t any lameness. For my
own piece of mind and the fact I had
the CDI International Trot up a day
later, I got a vet to come out and inspect
Bodyguard.
After watching my video, flexion testing
him and trotting him up on the hard
surface, no lameness could be found so
we carried on as normal.
A welcome distraction came when
Annabelle got to have a sit on Valegro
with Charlotte Dujardin - definitely one
for the family album!
Much to my surprise, the same judge
then gave me the highest score of the
five judges’ scores on the first day of the
International. With all this happening,
I didn’t ride the best of tests on the first
day as in my mind I was waiting for them
to ring the bell.
However, there was no bell and we
finished on 65.7% to end up in 17th place
out of 32 which, considering I hadn’t
ridden as confidently as I could have
done, and this was an International not
just a National competition, I was really
Lara and
Bodyguard
competing at
Sheepgate Premier
League.
pleased with him and our placing.
The following day, I decided I needed
to ride with more power and more
commitment and as our allotted time
was not until 5pm I over-cooked it and
got him too tense which showed in his
relaxation and submission marks.
We ended up on a disappointing score
but there were lots of positives in the test
and a few eights but the fours and fives
for tension brought us down.
I am still over the moon with him and
how far we have come. Gaining our
GB badge was one of my biggest life
ambitions. Now I have to aim for the
next goal which would be a top ten
placing, plus we are stepping up the
levels now to Inter 2 and Grand Prix so it
is all new to both of us!
Team Sheepgate are off
Wow what a month it has
been in the Sheepgate
camp. Lily Payne and
Ann Savage’s Beckhouse Cancara
had the most amazing show in
Hagen at The Future Champions
event which resulted in them being
added to the short list for The
European Championships. After
a weekend at the pre-European
training camp we are absolutely
delighted to announce that they
have been selected as the Children
On Horses first ever British rider
to be representing Great Britain
at The European Championships
in Roosendaal in August. So the
busiest month of the year at
Sheepgate has now just got busier!!!
34 August 2017 Equestrian Life

on another adventure!!!
SO WHAT SHOULD THIS
MONTH’S FOCUS BE ON?
How straight are you and your
horse? Consider the first thing
the judge sees when you enter the
arena. Your entry can impress the
judge and you can score highly or
the entry can highlight immediately
any straightness issues that you
and your horse may have. Do you
always enter from the same rein
and are you giving yourself the best
opportunity to show how straight
you can both be? So how can we
improve this?
Pole work plays a valuable part
in the daily routine at Sheepgate.
There is always a set of poles ready
for use and my favourite exercise is
using the arrangement of four poles
forming a square. Alex Jewell who
manages many areas of Sheepgate
helps on a daily basis with specific
exercises for each of the horses
to develop their way of going
and increase their core stability.
Poles can play a valuable part in
developing the straightness of the
horse and rider.
LET’S LOOK AT THE
HORSE FIRST
If he walks through a set of poles in
hand and always drifts one way it
is highly likely this might happen
when he is ridden too. Can you
walk between two poles and make
a halt and then ask him to rein
back between the poles or even
place a pole on an inner track and
walk between the side of the arena
or fence and pole and judge the
straightness. Will he step back and
stay straight or does he typically
always move one way. Improve
this in hand and it will make a big
difference to how he goes when
ridden.
BUT NOW LET’S LOOK AT YOU!
Are you straight? Everybody has a
favoured pattern that they follow in
day to day activities e.g. when you
take a flight of stairs do you always
start with the same foot? When you
lift a bag of shopping (I always have
two bags to balance myself out, why
buy one pair of shoes when you can
buy two!!!) do you always use the
same hand, even down to which
shoulder do you hang your hand bag
on? If you stand in a lazy posture,
because we all do at times, do you
always ‘prop’ your weight the same
way? All of these little things that
we repeat many times on a daily
basis do contribute significantly to
our ‘form’ that does play a huge part
in our partnership with our horse.
Help yourself when you are not on
your horse and there will be a big
difference when you are on your
horse.
Pilates or Equipilates can help
hugely too if you want to target
specific areas to improve your
riding.
IMPROVE YOUR PARTNERSHIP
So once you are reunited with
your horse or pony, how is it
feeling now? If you make yourself
straighter, it may feel a bit strange
to start with when you get back on
your horse. If you are confident in
an enclosed space, try closing your
eyes for a few seconds and you may
‘feel’ more about your straightness
and how your horse is moving
underneath you.
If you have your horse worked on
by a therapist of some sort, do you
have yourself worked on as well?
I often hear that riders pay close
attention to having a monthly
massage for their horse but they
have never had one themselves.
Consider the effect if your body is
still tight and knotted up and your
horse is feeling great and released
from his treatment, how will he feel
after you have ridden him a few
times and your body is still feeling
tight and restricted?
Have a great month and enjoy
your riding.
A successful breeding
season for Sovereign
Equestrian....
Here at Sovereign Equestrian we breed 3 or 4 foals a year
from mares that are either retired from competition or are
taking a break. We feel it is important to only breed out of
talented mares, as you can breed from the greatest stallion
in the world but if the mare isn’t talented herself she will
affect the ability of the foal. Of cause, there are always
‘freaks of nature’ which are superstars born from horses that
were not that special themselves. But breeding is an odds
game and by breeding from a good stallion with a good
mare you are turning the odds in your favour.
The first step when looking at putting your mare in foal is to
properly evaluate her. This means fully understanding and
being honest about her strengths and her weakness, even the
best horses have flaws, but the skill in breeding is to identify
any weaknesses and strive to find a stallion to counteract
them. A close look at her conformation, pedigree, length of
stride, athleticism, scope, temperament, to name a few are
important to evaluate.
However, after doing all of this there is no guarantee that the
foal will be a superstar. All you can do is hope and try your
best to produce a quality foal. Opposite are some of our more
recent foals:
1. 1 Gorgeous N 2017- Galerius x Indorado x Libro H
2. 2 Peppedi N 2015- Peppermill x Verdi x Larino
3. 3 Chacco’s Valentino C 2017- Chacoon Blue x Valentino
x Voltaire
4. 4 Peppedi N and Koluno C
5. 5 Caribo N 2014- Chaleureux x Bodinus
6. 6 Lomasi C 2016- Zambezi x Valentino x Voltaire
7. 7 Indygo Blue 2013- Chaleureux x Indorado
8. 8 Koluno C 2015- Numero Uno x Valentino x Voltaire
9. 9 Broadchurch N 2017- Galerius x Verdi x Larino
10. Messarado Blue 2015- Messenger x Indorado x Libro H
11. Glorious Blue 2016- Galerius x Indorado x Libro H
Once you have a full and thorough understanding of your
mare you can start to look for the right stallion. Again, it is
important to be critical of the stallions that are within your
price range. As the better the match you are increasing your
chances of a better foal.
At Sovereign Equestrian, we have spent 5 years choosing
the best stallions for our mares, selecting a mix of high
profile stallions but also younger more up and coming types.
However, one commonality is that each stallion enhances
the mare. We look at the stallion’s offspring as well gauging
what traits are passed on, therefore trying to gain a full
understanding of what characteristics the foal might develop.
At Sovereign Equestrian, we train, maintain, and care for our
horses so that they become exceptional performers across all
disciplines. We know that a fit and healthy horse is a happy
horse, and a happy horse is a successful horse. We want to
share some of our techniques with you because, with the right
care and training, your horse can reach its true potential.

Back to Basics
with
GARY
FOGGON
In this feature, Black Country Saddles sponsored rider, Gary Foggon, explains a few
basic exercises to deliver consistency when heading for the competition arena
When not competing
himself, Gary is always
busy training other riders
and he thoroughly enjoys both
aspects of the sport.
With all this experience, he takes
time out to share with readers some
straightforward exercises for young
horses which, if carefully followed
through, will lead to fantastic
results.
However, he stresses that behind
all these exercises is the need for
patience when teaching a young
horse to jump. Your horse should
be as relaxed as possible, to get the
best from him.
EXPLAINS GARY:
“At all times before you start
jumping, you should ensure your
horse is obedient and soft on the
flat.
“It is important to be clear what
you want from your horse. A system
of rewards will reinforce what you
are aiming for, and repetition will
consolidate this.
“Starting with little and often, this
training needs to build gradually,
allowing you to slowly progress to
higher fences.
“Whilst you are aiming for a relaxed
approach, you must be disciplined
and logical throughout the process
so that when it finally comes to
being able to compete, nothing
needs to change, as working
correctly is all your horse is used to.
“You have to build a relationship
with your horse so he is comfortable
in thinking for himself. It is fine for
him to make mistakes, as long as
you are ready to correct them.
“Your horse must readily move in
a straight line in the direction you
are wanting when you are working
on the flat, so you can transfer this
good practice when jumping.
“The next stage to move to when
you are confident with your horse’s
performance on the flat is to
introduce poles on the ground. This
will encourage your horse to think
about his stride and where he is
placing his feet.
“I would advise starting this exercise
with two trot poles, and once your
38 August 2017 Equestrian Life

horse is relaxed and comfortable
with this exercise, move the poles
out to a canter distance.
“In time, you will be able to replace
the last pole with a simple crosspole.
Throughout these exercises, it
is important that you do not change
the way you ride. Your horse will
be very perceptive to this, and you
do not want him to think there is
something different that he will be
worrying about.
“When you feel this exercise is
being performed correctly with your
horse maintaining the same speed
and you are consistently keeping
a rhythm over the poles, you can
move on to placing the poles on a
circle.
“For this exercise, I suggest placing
four poles in a fan shape on a 20
metre circle. Key to this is to use the
same distance as you have practised
with in the earlier exercise. Whilst
your horse will once again need
to think about placing his feet,
the curve of the circle creates
suppleness, and will help him build
balance and strength.
Once your horse is confident doing
this exercise in trot, it is time
to change the poles to a canter
distance. This will initially be a
big challenge for your horse and
you must not allow him to speed
up through the poles. Your focus
needs to be on ensuring your horse
is relaxed and confident, and in
this way, he will not rush or lose his
balance.
You must think about your own
position too, keeping your upper
Your focus needs
to be on ensuring
your horse is relaxed
and confident, and in
this way, he will
not rush or lose
his balance
body tall and wrapping your
leg around his sides. You are a
big influence on balancing your
horse and supporting him with an
encouraging leg.
Progressing still further, you need
to teach your horse to land on
either canter lead and the most
effective way of doing so is by riding
over a small fence in a figure of
eight pattern. However, this must
not be done in isolation as you must
maintain rhythm, circle size and
striding to the fence, and as you
jump the fence, open your rein to
ask your horse to land on that lead.
THE VINCI JUMP
The choice of saddle that Gary uses
for both show jumping and cross
country is the Black Country Saddle
Vinici Jump.
Said Gary: “I have recently been
involved in new saddle designs,
coming up with ideas and providing
feedback on latest developments
and innovations for Black Country
Saddles.
“The saddles are just fantastic and
as soon as you sit in one they are so
comfortable, the leather is soft and
supple from day one”.
Young Entrepreneur
launches Equestrian
Performance Brand
Scottish based Equestrian
Clothing Brand, Apt Cavalier Ltd,
has launched their introductory
collection “On The Yard”. Founded
by Fashion Graduate and keen British
Eventer, Sarah Johnstone who is
based in Galashiels, Apt Cavalier’s
aim is to produce sportswear which
professional riders will love to ride in,
at a price which amateur riders can
afford.
Sarah graduated from Heriot Watt
university in 2012 with a BAHons
degree in Fashion Design for Industry,
Sarah has spent time working in the
industry gathering the relevant skills
and experience to not only start her
own business, but to run it well. She
has been horse riding herself since
she was eight years old and currently
competing her own horse, Woody, up
to BE Novice level. This season alone
has seen them qualify for numerous
British Eventing Reginal finals and the
Scottish Championships.
Sarah said that combining her
degree with her experience in the
competitive horse world just “made
sense”. When asked why she had
chosen to start her own business she
commented that “other sports such
as cycling have moved ahead with
the technology used in their clothing,
whereas horse riding has been slightly
left behind. There has been progress
in the last few years as we now see
lightweight helmets, plastic stirrups
and innovative air jackets replace
their old-fashioned predecessors in
the collecting ring, so this is the time
that Apt Cavalier can really shine.”
Apt Cavalier’s introductory
range is now available from
www.aptcavalier.com and
is made up of garments for
training such as Gilets and
Softshell Jackets and well as Hat
Covers, Bobble Hats and Saddle Cloths
which are instantly recognisable due
to their elegant AC branding.
Apt Cavalier’s Elite Performance
range will be released later in July
and includes innovative Performance
Skins and Competition Shirts which
use clever design features including
mesh inserts to keep the rider cool
during the intensity of competition.
These garments are constructed using
top of the range technical fabrics
sourced from Italy, Germany, Sweden
and Switzerland which embody
qualities such as muscle support, UV
protection and stain repellent. Apt
Cavalier partner with specialist British
Sportswear factories to produce high
quality garments which will truly
increase the comfort and aid the
performance of the rider.
Apt Cavalier has already secured
a partnership with top Equestrian
photographer Dave Cameron, based
outside Edinburgh, along with two of
his FEI riders, Jodie Neill from Drum
and Giorgia Burns from Kilsyth, who
have joined Apt Cavalier as Brand
Ambassadors. The AC Performance
Skin has recently been chosen to
feature in the August edition of Horse
& Rider Magazine and with over 8,000
followers on social media already Apt
Cavalier is already making an impact
on the equestrian world.
STUART BUNTINE
eventing
A Bit of
DOWNTIME!
It has been good to have a bit of
time without events. Most of the
year we are full on, requiring us to
be on the go planning and preparing.
That said we have still had our
summer series of eventer trials. These
have been popular, it is good to see
that the concept that we have tried
to deliver has worked. These days are
all about low key training for young
horses getting out into a competition
for the first time, learning to jump a
small course and see a range of banks,
ditches etc. I was amazed to see one
well know rider who travelled over
2 hours to bring a couple of young
horses!
We have two more, well only one by
the time you read this, and of course
there is the added bonus of getting
through to compete at Osberton
on Friday 29th September over the
championship showjumping and
cross country. Good luck to you all if
this is your aim.
Last weekend we had some time at
home with 6 Australian family here.
It was the really hot weekend which
was lovely as we were able to sit out
for breakfast, lunch and dinner.... they
were amazed that the British summer
allowed this! Following this we had
a week in Cornwall in equally ideal
weather.
Trips to some of the stunning Cornish
sea side villages, Lost Gardens of
Heligan and the Eden project. We had
not been there for over 10 years so it
was fascinating to see how they have
developed.
On the way home, we called to
look at a new event site. I cannot
say where it is, but it offers a really
exciting opportunity. We are
approached several times a year to
look at prospective sites, most have
challenges and do not get past the
first or second visit, however I think
this could be different, a spectacular
site with a great backdrop of park and
house and close to a major city, like 1
mile from the centre! There are still
lots of bridges to cross, the largest
being getting a date, but let’s see what
happens.
We have just hosted a charity ride for
Spinal Research, setting off from here
we had three rides all finishing up on
the cross-country course.
Once they had put horses away it was
all to the BBQ for lunch. Everyone
seemed to have a good day and
looking forward to the next one.
Spinal Research is a great cause that
we are really happy to support and the
day raised over £2000, Burghley Horse
Trials had donated a pair of tickets to
the rider raising the most money - a
great incentive!
I have the last week of my Goldman
Sachs course coming up. A three day
residential when we have to present to
all our colleagues, our business plans
for the next three years, growth ideas,
goals and implementation actions. I
am madly trying to get it all done as it
has to be submitted.
It has been a great course; however
it will now be time to put all the
learning into practice over the next
month’s / years.
It is now heads down for the run in to
the end of the season, whilst it is only
July, Osberton, and then Oasby are
very close and will soon be upon us.
Lots to do with our new event at Firle
Place a month away. Firle is one of
the oldest events in the calendar,
and welcome a big crowd each year,
especially for their dog festival. It will
be good to get the first event under
the belt as there is always so much to
learn ‘on event’ that gets missed no
matter how good the preparation.
SEIB
Rescue horse qualifies for HOYS
A
rescue horse that almost died
from starvation three years ago
will be competing at Horse of
the Year Show (HOYS) in October in
the final of the SEIB Insurance Brokers
Search For a Star (SFAS) series.
At the SEIB SFAS qualifier at Bury
Farm on 16 July, Cheryl Moore’s lovely
Connemara-Thoroughbred cross
George Gently — named after the TV
detective series character — gave fulltime
estate agent Anthony Nicholas
a HOYS qualifying ticket in the hack/
riding horse division.
When Cheryl rescued George in
September 2014, he was severely
malnourished. “Her vet said that if
he had been left in that condition
for a further two weeks he would
have died,” said Anthony, who lives
in Lymm, Cheshire, and fits in riding
George whenever work permits. “It
breaks my heart to even think about
that because he is so loving and
appreciative of everything you do for
him.
“Although George was four years old,
Cheryl’s farrier said he still had ‘foal
feet’ because of his condition. He
reckoned she would be very lucky if
she ever got to ride him, but this didn’t
stop George. He has a heart of gold
and wasn’t going to let his past affect
his future.
“His little foal feet turned into solid
hooves, giving him the opportunity to
do anything.
Emma Croft - Colourful Life
“Because of work commitments, I’d
given up horses but was missing them
terribly,” Anthony continued. “I met
Cheryl through a mutual friend in
2015 and she suggested I might like to
take George for a hack. She then asked
if I would help her out with schooling
him.
“I thought he had huge potential to
be a lovely show horse and as Cheryl
and I became good friends, the
partnership between
me and George just
went from strength to
strength.”
Anthony could not have been more
delighted to qualify for HOYS. “It’s
been a dream of mine to ride at HOYS
since I first went when I was nine to
watch, but I never thought it would
happen,” he said. “This is a wonderful
series — we were delighted to be third
at the qualifier at Osbaldeston in
April and the knowledge, support and
confidence that the judges gave me on
that day made me realise I was on a
horse that could maybe get the golden
ticket with a bit more work.
“Now, George will fulfil my childhood
dream of riding at HOYS.”
JOY FOR EMMA
A run of bad luck finally ended for
Lancashire-based Emma Croft when
her seven-year-old maxi, Colourful
Life (Teddy), landed the second
qualifying ticket.
Emma, a team leader for Preston
Skoda, has lost three beloved horses
from lameness in recent years.
“They were all hunters so I decided
to go for something completely
different,” said Emma, who bought
Teddy from Reid Finlay in Ireland last
October. “I’ve always wanted to do
SFAS, but Teddy is still very much a
novice and this was his first time with
a ride judge, so I’m absolutely thrilled
to qualify today.”
SEIB RDA FROM HARTPURY
Impressed
judges double
final tickets
Photos by SMR Photos
Judges at the second qualifier
for the SEIB Insurance Brokerssponsored
Riding For the Disabled
(RDA) Search for a Star (SFAS), held at
Hartpury College on Friday (14 July),
were so impressed by the standard that
they sent four – instead of the planned
two – through to the September final.
“It was a fantastic competition with
an extremely high standard — in
fact, it put some able-bodied riders
to shame,” said judge David Bartram,
who used to help at Wetherby RDA
centre and officiated here alongside
David Ingle and Richard Ramsay. “We
had 30 entered and because they were
so good, we decided to put four riders
through to the final at Addington.”
The winner at Hartpury had only been
riding her horse for a month. Gabby
Blake, 24, who lives in Whatton in
Nottinghamshire but is from Port
Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, beat 29 other
hopefuls riding The Rose of Derry,
as her own pony, Geronimo, was
unsound.
“My horse went lame a month ago —
we tried to get him ready for today
but he was too sore, so I used Rose,”
explained Gabby, who does volunteer
work. “She does lessons during the
day and is an ex-show jumper, but she
was so good, I couldn’t have asked for
anything better. She was fantastic.”
Gabby, who is in the South Notts RDA
group, has a rare and painful condition
but has been riding for most of her
life. “My parents are horsey and I have
been for as long as I can remember
— I got my first pony when I was
two months old,” she said. “My main
problem is pain, but when I’m riding I
don’t feel the pain. I don’t get sore and
it’s a lovely feeling.”
She competes with Geronimo in para
dressage but used to do showing
and has been considering
returning to the show ring.
She was impressed by the
standard at Hartpury, where
this qualifier was held as
part of the RDA National
Championships over the
weekend of 14-16 July.
“All three classes were very
good and it was quite a buzzy
atmosphere,” said Gabby.
“It’s great to have a showing
series because it’s something
different for us to do, and
this has encouraged me to go
back to showing. I hadn’t competed at
Hartpury before and I certainly didn’t
expect to do so well.”
David Bartram commented: “It was
a fantastic competition with an
extremely high standard — in fact, it
put some able-bodied riders to shame.
The winner was quite severely disabled
but had the most lovely core position
and rode really well. She got her horse
in a beautiful rhythm and way of
going, with its ears pricked the whole
time. It was a lovely, quality animal
and they were fabulous to watch —
out-and-out worthy winners.”
The judges were full of praise for the
runner-up, too – Lizzie Bennett, who
rode side saddle on the coloured cob
Rolo. In contrast to Gabby’s previous
showing experience, it was Lizzie’s
first show ring outing but she was
undeterred.
“I’ve never done showing before in my
life so I didn’t know what to expect,
and I didn’t really know what I was
doing,” joked Lizzie, 27, who rides
one-handed with specially adapted
reins from Mulryan Saddlery. “They’re
normal reins but with holes along
their length and three bars with metal
spikes that slot in. You can move them
Gabby Blake and The Rose of Derry
up and down to make a shorter rein
for jumping and a longer one for a nice
long-rein walk or something like that,”
she explained. “They’re really nifty!
There’s another girl in my group who
rides one-handed [Eleanor Currington,
who finished sixth on Minstrel] and
she uses them too.”
Lizzie had her own horse when she
was younger, but had to sell him when
she broke her back doing gymnastics
“It took me about 10 years to get back
to riding but I was trying at a normal
riding school and sometimes they
had to pull me off the horse because I
couldn’t move,” she revealed. “I joined
the RDA about three years ago and it’s
worked really well — I wish I’d done it
before. My back will never be right; I’m
in constant pain but it’s been that way
for half of my life so I’m used to it.”
Her weakened left arm is due to a
genetic condition that also affects her
left shoulder. “It’s not helped by the
fact that I keep falling off and landing
on it,” she admitted.
Like many of the SFAS contestants,
she was also competing in dressage
and show jumping at the national
Lizzie Bennett and Rolo
championships. She and Rolo finished
seventh in dressage on the second day
and won their show jumping class on
the first day.
“I’m very proud of Rolo,” said Lizzie,
who works part-time at primary school
intervention for special needs children
in Saffron Walden, Essex. “The
Cambridgeshire College RDA group
was told he wasn’t an appropriate RDA
pony because he can be quite naughty.
But I love riding him because I know
that even if he has his silly, spooky
moments, he’s just a sweet little horse.
I wish I owned him so I could ride him
every day.”
Steward Chris Bartram-Lawton, who
also helped with David Bartram at
Wetherby RDA group, said: “Despite
only being able to use one hand, the
runner-up had a fabulous position and
rode quite beautifully in a really good
rhythm — some able bodied riders
should have seen it. She had only
ridden side saddle four times so this
was an incredible achievement.”
A last-minute decision to enter paid
off for Middlesbrough-based Brooke-
Leigh Johnson, 10, when her charming
15-year-old pony, Wrentnall Snowman
(Spider), took the third qualifying
ticket. Brooke-Leigh, who suffers from
hearing loss and speech problems, has
been a member of the Unicorn Centre
for the past five years and is a keen
competitor at all the shows held there.
“She’s come on in leaps and bounds
and has a great partnership with
Spider,” said yard manager Christine
Beedle. “We had three ponies here at
the [RDA] championships and thought
we’d enter them in this competition
for a bit of fun. I knew Brooke-Leigh
would give it her best shot, and we’re
delighted for her. We’ll definitely make
the long journey down to Addington
for the final.”
“This pony had the sweetest outlook,”
said David Bartram. “It went with its
ears pricked, the jockey was smiling all
the time and the whole package was
picture-perfect.”
The fourth qualifier was Imogen
Darke, 18, who was inspired to take
part in this competition when she
attended the initial lecture/demo
given here last year, when the SEIB
concept of the class first took root.
Imogen, who suffered a severe head
injury in an accident at the age of
11 and spent two months in a coma,
has little peripheral vision but she
partnered Chandaem My Guy, her
family’s 14-year-old hunter, with great
aplomb.
“As a family, we’ve been involved with
horses all our lives and we’re very
lucky as the Erme Valley RDA group
— which Imogen has attended for the
past three years — is only 10 minutes
from our home,” said her father Ross,
a former jump jockey. “We are over
Imogen Darke and Chandeam My Guy
Brooke-Leigh Johnson and Wrentnall Snowman
the moon to qualify for the final. It’s
a fabulous competition and we’d like
to thank SEIB and Hartpury College,
as well as all the judges for giving up
their time.”
SEIB marketing director Nicolina
MacKenzie, who first thought of the
competition and pushed to make it
happen, was delighted with both the
numbers forward and the standard
they represented.
“These riders are truly inspirational,”
she said. “Many of them would give
able-bodied riders a good run for their
money, and the difficulties they have
overcome in their lives are a lesson to
us all. I am so very pleased that SEIB
as a company has been able to launch
this series and we are very grateful
to RDA for its help with running this
competition and its support generally.
“I am so delighted to be involved with
this – it is completely new and one of
the most important things I have ever
done. I am sure it will go from strength
to strength and we are all looking
forward to a superb final at Addington
Manor on 7 September.”
Following the intermittent rain during the
week leading up to the show, the ground
was the best it has ever been, and the
sun shone throughout the day on Saturday 1st
July, making for yet another successful annual
Laxton Charity Show.
A number of local riders took part in the
various classes, some of which were qualifiers
for the Equestrian Life Championships
2017 and the Equine Sports UK Grassroots
Championships held at Arena Uk 3rd-6th
the not so familiar competitors travelling from
far and wide, one competitor travelling just
under 50 miles in order to take part.
Once again a healthy donation
Ashby
Show
Supreme Ridden Pony
Champion Chloe Reeve
and Hollyhock Blaithin
Photos by Equipics.co.uk
Described as one of the best
Agricultural Shows in the
midlands, Ashby Show didn’t
disappoint once again this year.
With classes ranging from various
HOYS qualifiers to workers classes,
as well as classes just for local riders,
there was something for everyone.
Derby based 17-year-old Chloe Reeve
and her 9-year-old Connemara mare,
Hollyhock Blaithin (Holly) caught the
judges eye.
Winning the M&M Junior Large Breed
classes, the combination then
went on to take the BSPS M&M
Championship before being crowned
overall Supreme Ridden Pony.
Purchased as a rising 4-year-old,
Chloe has produced Holly herself
and last year finished 7th in the
British Dressage Native Breeds
Championships.
Described by Chloe as a total
sweetheart both on the ground and
in the saddle, Holly will now have a
well deserved holiday by visiting the
beach next week before Equifest in
August.
“I’m absolutely over the moon, I
really didn’t expect to take the BSPS
M&M Champion, let alone ridden
supreme pony! Holly truly gives
100% effort in everything I ask and
genuinely is my pony of a lifetime.”
said Chloe.
Standing reserve ridden pony was
13-year-old Welsh Section B, Rockbury
Bolero (Mr Ben at home), ridden by
7-year-old Honey Mae Fellows from
Derbyshire.
Winning the BSPS Open Lead Rein
Pony of Hunter Type, the adorable pair
then went on to take the Show Hunter
Pony Champion, before being crowned
Reserve Supreme of Show.
Owned by Honey’s godmother, Jo
Annie Mason and Bytham Abigail, Caspian
Champion and Reserve Champion Show
Hunter Ponies
King, Mr Ben was initially on loan
to the family last season after they
unexpectedly lost their lead rein
show pony. Unfortunately, their bad
luck didn’t stop there, when half way
through the season they had a car fire
on the way back from a show and lost
all tack, clothing and everything they
needed to compete.
Saviours came in the form on Nicola
Annable of Meynell Saddlery, Black
Country Saddles and good friends who
helped the family get going again and
since then they haven’t looked back,
especially since being offered the
opportunity to purchase Mr Ben after
the BSPS Championships soon after.
Jo described Honey and Mr Ben’s
partnership as amazing. “Honey
absolutely adores Mr Ben and rides
him off he lead rein at every chance,
jumping and hacking out. I’m not
quite sure who baths who before the
shows!”
“We’re completely home produced
and both myself and Honey’s mum
work to fund the horses. Our dream
would be to qualify for HOYS but
sadly we haven’t managed to grab that
elusive ticket yet - but we’re not giving
up trying!” continued Jo
Over in the Traditional Gypsy Cob
ring, it was Rowena King and her mare,
RSPCA Tess that caught the judges eye
in the Open Mixed Age - In Hand class.
The pair then went on to take the
Traditional Gypsy Cob overall
Champion with Goldstone Mr
Fantastic, owned by V Lee who were
second in the mixed age class, as
reserves.
class, which was won by 6-year-old
Ujenik Extasy Fine Design, owned and
No stranger to the HOYS classes, this
will be the second year Ujenik Extasy
Fine Design has collected his HOYS
ticket, after finishing 3rd last year in
the stallion class.
Another that needs no introduction
Derbyshire
County Show
Competitors flocked to
Derbyshire County Shows which
was kindly hosted by Lucy and
David Palmer of Locko Park which was
a new venue for this year following a
disaster with flooding back in 2016.
All rings were well subscribed and
well supported, with a large number of
entries in most classes.
17-year-old Grace Redfern from
Tibshelf in Derbyshire and her 4-yearold
Irish Draught, Sarn Shepherds
Hill, campaigned the Irish Draught
Blue Chip Qualifier and despite it
being his first ridden show with a ride
judge went on to win and then take
the ridden Irish Draught Champion.
Not stopping there, the duo went on
to win the ID/ISH in hand class as well
as taking in-hand champion and then
overall in-hand supreme of show with
Fell pony, Wansfell Wandaran handled
by L Bamforth as in-hand reserve
supreme.
Amy Bryan-Dowell
and Ceilis Bouncer
Jill Wormall and Celtae Cross
Commenting on the day, owner
and rider, Grace said: "We were
absolutely over the moon with Shep's
performance throughout the day. I'm
over the moon with how we went,
especially given his age! The ride
judge gave me some lovely feedback
and I'll just be taking things slowly
with him now as he's already achieved
more than I dreamt he would."
The combination have now qualified
for the breed show final which is held
later in the year.
Another combination sweeping up the
red ribbons this season is Derbyshire
Based Thomas Partridge and Jo
A Potter Firth, Newto Hill Prince Albert
Tom Partridge and SD Prince
Martin's SD Prince of the Wystone
Stud.
The duo won the Open Traditional
Gypsy Cob Association class and then
went on to take reserve in the TGCA
Championship.
"It's Princes' first season showing and
he's had an amazing run up until now,
gaining champion at both Newark
and Lincoln. I'm just the legs and the
runner and its Danni Radford that
produces him and puts the hard work
in!"
"Prince has gone home now to cover
some mares but will then come
back out for the TGCA and CHAPS
championships later on in the year!"
Over in the Local Riders ring, which
was sponsored by Equestrian Life
and aimed at riders living in a certain
mile radius of the show, entries were
bursting.
Belper rider, Stacey Smith and her
19-year-old, Irish Draught, Just A
Rumour won the local hunter class
and then went on to take the local
riders ridden championship.
"We won this class and championship
7 years ago, but this time decided to
come out in side saddle, which we've
been doing for just under two years
now." Said Stacey.
"Roo felt exactly like she knew
what she was doing and behaved
impeccably despite a dancing digger
show going off next to us! The rest
of the season we will be competing
at the 15+championships and ESUK
as well as the side saddle shows and
county shows."
However, it was Leicester rider,
Jill Wormall, and Celtae Cross
that managed to wow the judges
after winning the Novice Working
Hunter exceeding 14.2h class,
taking the Novice Working Hunter
Championship and then went on
to take the ridden supreme of show
with Lincolnshire based Holly Bignell
and Padula Party Pants in reserve
after winning the First Ridden SP/SH
class and a third in the Cradle Stakes
Working Hunter Pony.
The organisers of Derbyshire
County would like to thank all
exhibitors for their support after the
2016, but hoping this year's show
will put them back on track and push
onwards for future shows and possibly
other events also.
Additionally, the Committee feels
a big thank you is owed to Lucy and
David Palmer of Locko Park for kindly
allowing Derbyshire County Show to
take over their 'garden' for a week.
Emma, the Lighthorse Secretary
would like to personally thank all of
the show team, the Lighthorse section
ran very smoothly with the help of
everyone involved on the day. A
Small hardworking, dedicated team of
volunteers made the Section what it
was, with some new faces for 2017 to
help keep this traditional event going,
as we are not getting any younger.
The Judges and stewards all seemed
to have a fantastic time, commenting
on how refreshing it was to have
happy smiling competitors with good
sportsmanship. Planning for 2018 is
underway and we will keep you up to
speed on web pages but also in real
time on Facebook.
KERRY DAVEY
Dip AM MAA
Regd. Like people,
horses can suffer
from back, neck,
pelvic and
musculoskeletal
problems, and can benefit from
McTimoney treatment. Treatment
involves careful analysis and
assessment of the spine, pelvis and
any other relevant joints and precise,
rapid adjustments are given to
problem areas. Consider taking advice
if you notice changes in performance,
movement, assymmetry, unexplained
resistance or uneven muscle
development. Falls, accidents and slips
are ofter a common cause and
competition places even more strain
upon their skeletal structure. Horses
also receive great benefit from
preventative treatment and
McTimoney can help them perform at
their best. Kerry is based in
Lincolnshire and obtains requests
directly from owners and referrals
from veterinary practices. Kerry is fully
