Hubbard’s Hills
One of the jewels in Louth’s crown is Hubbard’s Hills,
a beautiful tree clad valley with a chalk stream running
through it on the outskirts of the town. On the edge
of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the 35
acre site is a magical place which was bequeathed to
the town as a result of a tragic Victorian love story.
A wealthy Swiss teacher, Auguste Alphonse Pahud
died of a broken heart at the turn of the last century
following the untimely death of his beloved wife,
farmer’s daughter, Annie Grant. In his will Pahud left
instructions that a Board of Trustees should distribute
his money to celebrate the memory of his dear wife
and they decided that the acquisition of Hubbard’s
Hills would be a fitting tribute to her.
Today, Hubbard’s Hills is a hive of community activity.
School trips explore the nature and wildlife of the
Hills, families feed the ducks and no visit is complete
without the children crossing the stepping stones. It’s
a perfect destination for picnics in the summer and
snowball fights and sledging in the winter.
Today’s Trustees have a masterplan for regenerating
this favourite beauty spot and a new wood, sponsored
by Louth Lions, is due to be planted in the autumn to
celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The Hills often
come alive with community events throughout the year
such as the Louth Run for Life in June and the Louth
Lions Duck Race in September. There is also a family
run cafe nearby which is open all year round.
Whether you are looking for a peaceful walk to start
your day or a meeting place with friends, Hubbard’s
Hills is the perfect location as it has something for
everyone.
