y heartfelt
thanks goes
to all the
Rotarians who came
and contributed to the
success of our FIRE-
SIDE CHAT AND FEL-
LOWSHIP. Now, we
have prospective
members who are
ready for an Induction
to our club. We want
to hank PP Tito and
Ann Girlie Mora for
hosting the activities
last Saturday. Thanks also goes to our Fellowship
Chairman PAG Luigi Sarraga for a
job well done. We also had a successful
BALIK ESKUWELA AND FEEDING in Gusa.
This is our 11th year serving this community.
Thank you to PAG JohnMark and Ann
PP Ching Sarraga for the efforts and ably
assisted by Ann PP Nitz Evangelista who
prepared a sumptuous lunch for us.
It is once again going to be a busy week
for our club. Project “ SEAMLESS SEMINAR
“ will be this coming this August 12, Saturday.
We expect a big number of delegates
from the whole District 3870 because this
is the only seminar the District is giving for
the Year. We will have speakers from the
Various other districts particularly in Metro
Manila. I enjoin everybody to attend and
5
help. Project Chair Gus Rodano needs all
the help we can give.
Project “ TABANG SA SUNDALO“ will also
be launched in the afternoon of August
19 , Saturday . Our Project Chair Glenn
Dael will be giving us the details soon. We
will be serving them La Ilonga’s delicious
Batchoy and will also be handing them
packs for their basic necessities.
Finally , we hope to be able to submit our
Grant Application within the month of August.
We only lack a few more details to
finish the application. Once this is done,
we will submit this to the grants committee
for review and approval. Again , August
will be a busy month for the Rotary Club of
Cagayan de Oro. God bless us all.

SECRETARY’S COLUMN
Secretary Neil Ronard J. Que
A
little over a month since our Rotary year started and we had another progressive
week to be proud of!
The board successfully conducted our first Board Meeting on August 1. And just
twelve hours later our club was already implementing our second Balik-Eskwela and
Feeding Program. It was held at the Purok 1A Daycare Center and later on moved to
PSC Clubhouse both in Villa Ernesto Phase 2 in Gusa. Eleven Rotarians and Twelve
Anns served over 30 students, providing School Packs (Bag and school supplies) and
then Snacks and Arroz Caldo during the program followed a full lunch meal.
The club then conducted our very first Fireside Chat and Fellowship on August 5. PD
Tito Mora and his family graciously and lavishly hosted our event in their residence at
Oro Vista from 1:30pm until the evening. Twenty (20) Rotarians were present but the
main highlight was the attendance of 5 New and returning Prospects : Jim Casino, Ben
Booc, Noel Dajao, Jun Sarmiento and Henry Gatilogo. Seventeen (17) Anns also graced
the event.
Finally we are appealing to all Rotarians to settle their dues if still unpaid. Our club finances
are behind regarding this matter and the officers urgently appeal to each one to
please take time and review your accounts.
REMEMBERING
PRESIDENT-ELECT
SAM OWORI
S
am Owori, who had been elected
to serve as president of Rotary
International in 2018-19, would
have been the second African Rotary
member, and the first Ugandan, to hold
that office. He died unexpectedly on 13
July due to complications from surgery.
PE Sam's term as Rotary’s 108th president
would have begun on 1 July 2018
He joined Rotary in 1978 and was a
member of the Rotary Club of Kampala,
Uganda. Like many members, PE Sam
was invited to Rotary by a persistent
friend. He described himself as “an incorrigible
optimist” who chose to see the
best side of everyone and the bright
side of any situation. Gentle in manner,
unfailingly modest, and quick to smile,
PE Sam is remembered as “Smiling
Sam”.
He is largely credited with the tremendous
increase in clubs in Uganda: from
nine in 1988, when he was district governor,
to 89 today.PE Sam’s Rotary career
spanned some of Uganda’s most
difficult years, including the dictatorship
of Idi Amin, who was deeply suspicious
of Rotary and often sent agents to spy
on Rotary meetings. Prominent Ugandan
Rotary members, including Sam’s
own manager at the bank where he
worked, were picked off the streets by
Amin’s forces and killed. Many Rotary
clubs closed and most members withdrew:
from a high of 220 members, Rotary
membership dropped to around 20.
An avid learner, Sam held a graduate
degree in labor law from the University
of Leicester, England; a business management
degree from California Coast
University; and a management
graduate degree
from Harvard Business
School.
He served Rotary in many
capacities, including RI
director, trustee of The
Rotary Foundation, regional
Rotary Foundation
coordinator, regional RI
membership coordinator,
and RI representative to
the United Nations Environment Program
and UN-Habitat. He was a member
or chair of several committees, including
the International Polio Plus.
Sam became Paul Harris Fellow, Major
Donor, and Benefactor of The Rotary
Foundation.
Sam is survived by his wife, Norah;
three sons, Adrin Stephen, Bonny Patrick,
and Daniel Timothy; and grandchildren
Kaitlyn, Sam, and Adam.
completed, together with the spouses,
the balik eskwela in Purok
the needy barangays in the city.
We were graced with the attendance
of six Rotarians, with no less than
PDG Constantino "Tinnex" Jaraula, leading the group. Present were our very active RTN
President Tonyboy Fernandez, PAG Manny Alinabon, VP Julius Dulfo, Dir. Leoncio
Quicoy, and PVP Tony dela Cruz, The spouse led by President Angie Dael, showed support
by braving the heat and the mud, not to mention the scary "trisikad" ride traversing
the narrow pathways, towards
the destination.
The ladies in red, PDG Lady Linda
Caragos, PDG Lady Biema Along, PP
Ching Sarraga, PP Malou dela Cruz,
PP Juvy Sarraga, PP Vicky Blanco,
PVP Aida Gonzaga, PD Monette
Romero, and Dir. Ann Fernandez,
had the best time of their lives.
They were all smiles amidst the humid
condition, as they watch the
mothers, who presented two dance,
sing and act numbers as celebration
of July as nutrition month.
It was indeed a happy occasion for those who attended, and from our end. . . . .
"Thank you" will never suffice, the support you have shared in terms of time, treasure,
and talent, will always be cherished. Looking forward to another project in the offing.
ANNS’ CORNER
By Ann Pres. Angelie Mae
C. Dael
August 3, 2017 witnessed the 2 nd GMM
of the Rotary Anns at Kusina Higala.
Led by the ever creative PP Josy Alinabon,
the August celebrants (Lady Divin
Jaraula, Heidi Mendoza, and yours truly)
made the meeting a nationalistic
and festive affair with Fiesta sa Nayon
theme. We came clad in Filipiniana and
Muslim inspired attire, and valiantly
rose to the challenge of speaking in
Filipino.
One highlight of the day was the official
Induction of Ann Fernandez and Heidi
Mendoza who were charged by IPP/
Lady Linda Caragos and whose oath
was administered by Lady Biema Along.
It was very moving because both were
done in the national language.
We were honored to have Ann Joy
Dumlao join us
once again and she
promised not to
miss the fun of our
monthly meetings.
The Anns who
were adjudged by
popular vote for
having the Best
Attire are: PP Vicky
Blanco, Ann Heidi
Mendoza, Dir Aida
Gonzaga and PP
Jecs Soriano.
We thank Lady Divin Jaraula for the
lechon baboy that added an authentic
fiesta feel to our lunch buffet. Just like
going to a fiesta, no one left emptyhanded
because PP Josy Alinabon prepared
gift packs of savory native delicacies
for everyone to bring home. The
Anns had an early start to the fiesta celebration
of Cagayan de Oro City.
August 5 saw the simultaneous Fireside
Chats for both the Mother Club and its
Rotary Anns. IPP Linda Caragos together
with Lady Biema Along, PP Vicky
Blanco, PP Malou dela Cruz, PP Ching
Sarraga and PP Juvy Sarraga made it an
informative and educational afternoon.
In a casual atmosphere and over sandwiches
and tear-rendering bico, the rest
of us had a chance to share how we
started, why we stay, and our aspirations
for the Anns.
We were consistent in saying that aside
from the lofty goal of Service above Self,
with the Anns we discover true friends
in a group who exudes a genuine welcoming
feel to anyone new. It was a
valuable afternoon spent with our prospective
transformed Rotary into the world’s first
service club.
P
aul P. Harris
was born in Racine,
Wisconsin.
At age three,
when his family fell on
hard times, they moved
to Vermont to live with
Harris’ paternal grandparents.
He attended Princeton
University, the University
of Vermont and
the University of Iowa.
For the next five years he
worked odd jobs as
a salesman and reporter
for a newspaper, on fruit
farms, as an actor, a cowboy, and on
cattle ships that traveled to Europe.
Harris eventually settled in the Beverly
neighborhood of Chicago, where he
lived until his death in 1947.
He began his law practice in 1896 in
Chicago. In 1905 Harris organized the
first Rotary club “in fellowship and
friendship” with three business associates,
Silvester Schele, Gustavus Loehr
and Hiram Shorey. His initial goal was to
create a club of professional and businessmen
for friendship and fellowship.
Early on, Harris realized that Rotary
needed a greater purpose. While Harris
served as president of the Chicago Rotary
Club in 1907, the club initiated its first
public service project, the construction
of public toilets in Chicago. This step
PUZZLE SOLUTION
Harris had great ambitions for the
growth of Rotary, and very early in the
organization’s history new clubs were
started, first on the West Coast in San
Francisco, and then all over the US and
in Europe.
Paul Harris died on January 27, 1947.
More than 300,000 Rotarians mourned.
An outpouring of contributions to The
Rotary Foundation created the Paul Harris
Memorial Fund, which continues to
support the Rotary Foundation.
The Joy of Giving
Ann PP Victoria Blanco
Everyone seeks joy in their lives and not all
have come to discover that there is joy in
giving.
Many people nowadays are focused on
themselves – on what they want, on what
they need and on what they feel will most
benefit them. They are not interested in
other people especially the least of their
brethren.
Friends, if you want to experience a new
level of fulfilment, you have to get your
mind off yourselves. Try to figure out
what you can do for others. You will never
be truly fulfilled until you live the simple
secret of how to give your life away.
Be a Giver not a Taker. You may say that
you don’t have anything to give, but sure
you do! Somebody may need your advice
to solve his problems, somebody may need
your words of encouragement, your friendship,
your love, your care. Somebody who
has less than you might need a helping
hand. God created us to be free, but he
never intended for us to be independent of
each other because we need one another.
When you meet other people’s needs, then
God will surely meet your needs.
Let’s get practical. You may have some
items lying around your house, clothes you
haven’t worn in years, books, toys, etc. If
these things are not doing you any good –
they just pile up in your cabinets, bodega,
garage, everywhere in your house – why
not give them to someone who needs
them. Learn to practice this principle. If it
is not meeting a “need”, turn it into a
“seed”. Sow a seed now and expect abundance
of fruits with divine flavor.
WEEKLY MEETING
PHOTOS

ROTARY : MAKING A DIFFERENCE
By RI President Ian H.S. Riseley, 2017-18
S
ome
years
ago, a
new acquaintance
asked me
what should
have been a
simple question:
“What is Rotary?”
I opened
my mouth to
reply and then
stopped short with the realization that I
simply did not know where to begin.
The problem wasn’t that I didn’t know
what Rotary was. The problem was
that Rotary was — and is — too large
and complex to easily define. We are a
member-based organization, a clubbased
organization, and a servicebased
organization; we are local, regional,
and international; we are community
members, businesspeople and
professionals, working and retired, active
in nearly every country in the
world. Every one of our 1.2 million
members has a unique set of goals,
experiences, and priorities; every one
of us has a unique understanding of
Rotary.
16
To me, Rotary is defined not by who
we are, but by what we do — by the
potential that Rotary gives us, and the
ways we realize that potential in meaningful
and lasting service. Rotary has
been around for a long time: 112
years. In some ways, we’ve changed
tremendously, as we’ve grown, matured,
and adapted to the changing
needs of our members and communities.
In our fundamentals, however, we
remain the same: an organization of
people with the desire — and through
Rotary, the ability — to make a difference
in our communities, and the
world. We answer the question “What is
Rotary?” with our actions, by making a
difference through our service.
As an organization, we recognize how
important it is that the world understand
what Rotary is, and what we do.
At the same time, we know that it is
more important than ever to allow our
clubs to define Rotary service for themselves.
As Rotarians, we have more
flexibility than ever to decide how we
want our clubs to meet, work, and
grow. We’re focused more than ever on
making sure that Rotary reflects the
people it serves, with more women and
a more diverse membership. And we’re
working hard to ensure that Rotary remains
the world’s pre-eminent volunteer
service organization, by emphasizing
long-term planning, sustainable service,
and continuity in leadership on
every level.
In 2017-18, we will answer the question
“What is Rotary?” with the theme Rotary:
Making a Difference. However each
of us chooses to serve, we do it because
we know our service makes a
difference in the lives of others. Whether
we are building a new playground or
a new school, improving medical care
or sanitation, training conflict mediators
or midwives, we know that the work we
do will change people’s lives — in ways

large and small — for the better. Whatever
motivation each of us had for joining
Rotary, it is the satisfaction we find in Rotary
that causes us to remain, the satisfaction
of knowing that week by week,
year by year, we are part of Rotary: Making
a Difference.
From ANNS p. 12
Ben Booc) and Belle
Reyes (spouse of Dir Rey
Reyes).
A wonderful fellowship
followed over sumptuous
BBQ dinner, nonstop
munching, chatting and
dancing. We thank Rotarian
Tito and Ann Girlie
Mora for being so gracious
as to host last Saturday’s
activities.
August 19, a Saturday
will be our Tabang sa
Sundalo Project. PD Gloria
See pledged 2 cans of
assorted biscuits for each wounded soldier, PP Josy solicited linens and towels and a
sweet angel who wishes not to be named solicited a substation amount for this project.
If you wish to donate cash or solicit items we can include in our care packs, please contact
Project Chair PP Josy or any of the Anns Officers.
Let’s make August another strong month in a year that promises to be a whirlwind of
good. Let’s continue to make a difference!
