A LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
n Texas, seasons seem to slip from one to the other without much
notice or fanfare. Fall is no different, really. Unlike the northeast or the
mountain states, we generally don’t enjoy a profusion of color. We get
our dose of kaleidoscopic color in the spring when the wildflowers
burst onto the scene.
And while I understand why people get jazzed about colorful
landscapes, I personally get excited about the first norther. After
surviving a seemingly endless Texas summer, there’s nothing more
refreshing than the sudden drop in temperature, even if it’s fleeting,
that promises relief. It’s a signal that change is literally in the air.
Monarchs will pass through in a fluttering, flashing mass.
Doves will bring their acrobatic flying skills to grain fields, weedy
patches and stock tanks near you. Soon ducks and geese will fill
their favorite potholes.
Now some folks don’t like change, but I do. I learned a long time
ago that change is really the only thing that stays the same, whether
it’s in nature or in business. No day—and therefore no year—is ever
the same in ranch real estate.
Constant change doesn’t disconcert me because it gives me a chance
to apply the best advice I ever got. When I was still wet behind the ears, a
mentor said: “Look at the big picture, but when you’re faced with a decision
do the next best thing for your business and your family. If you base every
decision on what’s best, then you’ll always be okay.”
Keep that in mind as you flip through
our pages and look at the best ranches that
Texas has to offer. If you purchase the one
that best fits you, your family, friends and
even your business, it will be the next best
thing you’ve ever done.
