ZAMIA THEATRE
SATURDAY 2nd September
2.00 pm & 7.30 pm
Doors open at 1.30 pm & 7.00 pm - No bookings, just pay at the door.
only
Joyful, hilarious, touching, exciting. Going in Style fits in all these categories, proving
how age does not – and should not – deprive actors of comedic spirit. Michael
Cane ('Joe'), Morgan Freeman ('Willie') and Alan Arkin ('Al') give such good performances
to the point that moments of lack of subtlety – from both the script and
the direction – are minimised. It is a hell of a good time from beginning to end.
Down on their luck, the three old friends struggle to simply get through the day is
becoming more unbearable each day. 'Joe' is under the pressure of bank eviction
notices, 'Willie' has to overcome the distance from the family, and 'Al', well, could
not care less as long as he is not alone. Alan Arkin, by the way, steals every scene –
Little Miss Sunshine vibes, if you have seen that delightful film.
Their situation reaches breaking point when their pensions are frozen. The three
leads decide to rob their mutual bank and this part of the plot is what defines this
movie for what it is. On the one hand, it plays up, to the maximum level, all the
possible jokes and funny moments applicable to the circumstance – and the payoff
includes a supermarket scene that I will not forget so soon. Another way it works is
with the sneaky and twisty nature of the bank robbery operation – orchestrated with
the help of 'Jesus' (John Ortiz). These do not just make sense, but they are truly
clever. Author: brennocarillo from US
TM Playwrights Workshop
Next meeng: Sat 19 Aug, 2 l 4 pm, Clancy's Irish Bar and
Restaurant, 22 Main St, Tamborine Mountain
Tamborine Mountain Playwrights' Workshop
No-one has ever coined a satisfactory collective noun for a group of playwrights, although Tom Stoppard (a playwright
himself) once suggested 'a plot of playwrights'.
If someone comes up with a clever name, therefore, for TMLT's new 'playwrights' workshop', it will be gladly received.
Meanwhile, it'll be the TM Playwrights' Workshop. Very original.
This group is ongoing from last year's Playwrights Workshop, funded by Regional Arts Development Fund money
from the state Department of the Arts and Scenic Rim Regional Council. We were given a great start by our facilitator,
local actress and playwright, Elise Greig, who shared her amazing knowledge and skills that got us all on our playwriting
journeys.
Meetings are monthly, and involve members getting others to read, discuss and hence develop their work (with the
occasional guest speaker). The emphasis is on peer self-help and on generating a supportive, nurturing atmosphere that
motivates people to continue. We're all aware of the loneliness of the long-distance playwright!
Next meeting is Clancy's Irish Bar and Restaurant's front room, Saturday 19 August 2 - 4 pm (arrive earlier if you want
to order lunch). Thereafter, the group will generally meet on the fourth Saturday of the month. TMLT members only,
but remember membership is only $10 pa.
If you have any queries, or to go on a mailing list re the group's doings, contact theatre member Janis Bailey
tamborinejanis@gmail.com; 0418 122 295.

Behind the scenes
A big thank you to Barbara and Graham Lassiter who spent hours videoing
the two seasons of our one act plays and compiling a memory stick
of all the photos taken during the performances, press releases, programmes
and the videos. These have given the new directors and performers
the opportunity to see their work on stage and to learn from their
experience. Also a big thank you to Alison Macphail, who was our publicity
officer for the recent season; great job, Alison!
So much work goes on behind the scenes of a production from the volunteers
who man the theatre during performances, set up and clear the auditorium,
serve teas, coffees and ice creams, man the box office, and sell
raffle tickets at the door.
A special mention of our
providore Lyn Howard
who last month organised
front of house. Lyn
makes sure that there are
always provisions available
for workers and audiences.
Up in the bio box for the first time was Dianne
James who also presented her group Bella A’Cappella
on stage for their debut theatre performance.
The July season was ably stage
managed by Lesley Sawyer, doing
a fantastic job for the first
time.
Current committee members
Many new members may not be aware of the incredible work done to make TMLT the smooth
running organisation it is. A list of those who fill formal roles is printed on the back page of Titbits,
but the theatre would like to thank all those who have helped to make us not only a successful
lessor of the Zamia, but good at entertaining the public as well—Cath, Buckley, our President; Julie
Young, Vice President; Secretary Brian Franklin; Treasurer Pam Marsh and Assistant Treasurer
Rosie Powell; Membership Secretary, Sue Gates; Providore, Lyn Howard; Social Secretary, Pam
Hawthorne; Web Co-ordinator Naomi Blythe; Movie organiser John St Clair; Film Club Coordinator
Jenny McConaghy; and Zamia Theatre Manager Maura Gaughan, as well as Sonia Wagstaff
who is on the Zamia Management sub-committee.
Pam Marsh, our Treasurer,
whose picture is rarely if ever
published. Can be seen in the
box office or racing around
with her cash box under arm,
demanding receipts and proof
of purchase. She also takes over
when Sue Gates is on holiday.
And seems to do numerous
other things that we don’t have
space to mention.
Maura Gaughan, our Theatre
Manager, who keeps the
theatre hirers happy and has
introduced new users. An
onerous task but done with
enthusiasm, tact and discretion.
Just look at the list of
users outside the front door,
or on the website, to see
how busy the theatre (and
therefore Maura) is.

HAMLET by Venning
INNOCENCE is a
timeless and charming
romance from director
Paul Cox (A Woman’s
Tale) starring the incredibly
talented Julia
Blake (Hotel de Love,
Lonely Hearts) and
Charles “Bud”
Tingwell (The Castle).
It’s a compelling and heart-warming
testament to the human spirit and the
vital elements of passion and desire that
make the spirit soar.
For 50 years, Claire (Blake) has dealt
with the support and comfort of a loveless
marriage. Seemingly satisfied that
her twilight years will be spent with a
husband she’s grown to know but no
longer loves.
Claire’s entire world is turned upside down when a boyfriend from her youth
attempts to re-ignite a spark that once fuelled the fire of a torrid and passionate
affair. Now, torn between the man she knows and a love she needs, she is
faced with the most difficult – and important – choice of her life.
