COVENTRY BEARS
FORM
Coventry currently have a 50% record in
the League 1 Shield, losing to Hunslet in
round one before just edging out Hemel
29-26 last week. That was their first win in
almost two months after a horror run of six
consecutive losses, including thrashings at
the hands of Hunslet, Newcastle and North
Wales. Last week’s win is a step in the right
direction, though, as they managed to just
about control a Hemel side who are on the
up and even gave us a scare a few weeks
ago.
Coach Tom Tsang will be hoping his side
kick on now, and use it as a catalyst to
finish the season strongly.
BACKS
Arguably, Coventry’s biggest threat
comes in the halves, with Tsang having a
plethora of talented playmakers to choose
from. Brad Delaney and Billy Gaylor have
been the most used combination, but
the recent signings of Jordan Gale, Paul
Emanuelli and Sheffield loanee James
Kelly have created plenty of competition.
They lead what is otherwise a rather
youthful backline, consisting of the likes
of Jason Bass, Harry Chapman, Hayden
Freeman and Charlie O’Mara, who are all
younger than 21. Bass recently returned
from the Student World Cup, where he
represented England alongside our very
own Harry Kidd, Ben Stead and James
Mason. Fan favourite Jamahl Hunte
completes the options out wide, alongside
recent acquisition and former NRL Rookie
contestant Luke Frixou.
FORWARDS
Like in the backs, Coventry have used
mid-season recruiting to strengthen their
pack. Towering prop Brad Brennan and
versatile forward Paddy Jones have both
arrived on loan from Barrow and Rochdale
respectively, adding to the already bulky
front row of James Geurtjens and Jack
Morrison.
Alongside them, halfbacks Billy Gaylor
and James Kelly have filled in at hooker,
but are backed up Lewis Lord and former
South Wales Ironman Zak Williams. Lord
and back rower Kieron Sherratt have
also just returned from England Students
World Cup duty. Captain Matt Reid and
club record appearance holder Chris
Barratt are mainstays in the second row,
while John Aldred will be sure to add
impact off the bench.
