WEST OF ENGLAND
LIONHEARTS
NEW DEPARTURE FOR THE HARRY JEPSON TROPHY
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
18
In a new departure for the Harry Jepson
Trophy, which celebrates its 20th
anniversary this year, the competition will be
contested by regional rather than club sides
this season.
The West of England Lionhearts will join
sides from the East, London and the
Midlands in a four way tussle for the trophy
that has been competed for since 1997
when the North London Skolars carried
off the trophy as the best of the Southern
Conference.
Following trial matches and a successful
tour to Ireland last season, the West of
England management team have been
monitoring the progress of players playing
in the league this year and have identified
around 40 candidates for the squad to take
part in the competition.
There will be a trial match next Sunday
(20 August) to identify the final squad for
the opening game in September between
the East (players from Bath, Oxford,
Southampton, Portsmouth and Swindon)
and the West (Cheltenham, Gloucestershire,
Bristol, Forest Bulldogs, Somerset Vikings
players).
The Venue is yet to be announced but
the West of England twitter account (@
WestofEngRL) should give details when
they are available.
The Squads are as follows:
