FLAME OF THE WEST
WEST of ENGLAND FINAL PREVIEWS
WRITTEN BY CHRIS WILSON
16
With the semi finals now complete in the
West of England league, the double header
finals day will take place at Portway Rugby
Development Centre, Bristol this Saturday (12
August).
Having beaten Cheltenham Phoenix 44-28 in
their semi final encounter, Oxford Cavaliers
will meet the Pool 2 winners Swindon St
George in the Championship final at 3pm.
The final brings together last season’s plate
winners in the Cavaliers and the championship
runners up from 2016 Swindon who will be
contesting their fourth Grand Final having
also lost in 2011 and 2014 both times to the
Gloucestershire Warriors.
The Cavaliers will be in their third title decider
having lifted the crown in 2012 before
being demolished 94-12 by Cheltenham the
following year.
Swindon will go into the game as favourites
as they defeated the Cavaliers twice in the
regular season, 36-28 at home and more
emphatically 54-8 in Oxford. Having gone
through to the final without playing they
have had a fortnight to prepare and will be
desperate to earn some reward for what has
been a phenomenally successful season for
the club.
Prior to that (1pm kick off), the Plate
competition will be fought out between
Gloucestershire Warriors and Swindon St
George A.
The sides have met twice in the league when
100 points were shared in each game. The
