STUDENT SCENE have two years of acute care experience. Successful completion of the RMT exam requires mastery of the introductory skills that are outlined in the AHDI Model Curriculum—the required curriculum of every ACCP approved school. The need for a model curriculum in medical transcription was recognized early on in the formation of AAMT (now AHDI) in 1978. At that time, formal education programs in this profession were rare, and schools that wanted to pioneer in teaching this field were on their own in deciding how best to meet those needs. The birth of today’s model curriculum started with the creation of a collection of competencies needed by an entry-level transcriptionist, published in 1988 as the Competency Profile for MT Education Programs (COMPRO). The Model Curriculum evolved from that in an effort to guide medical transcription educational entities in successfully producing MTs whose experience met this profile. It has been revised four times (most recently in 2008), and always with the help of a consortia of educators and transcription professionals. The Model Curriculum serves as a set of guidelines that AHDI suggest medical transcription courses follow in order to develop in students the skills and aptitudes necessary to succeed as a practicing medical transcriptionist. With such precise and prestigious competencies met, it is no wonder that graduates of approved schools successfully complete the RMT exam at a greater instance than graduates of nonapproved schools! The Model Curriculum for Medical Transcription focuses on five key content areas: English Language, Medical Knowledge, It is no wonder that graduates of approved schools successfully complete the RMT exam at a greater instance than graduates of non-approved schools! Technology, Medicolegal Aspects of the Healthcare Record, and Medical Transcription Practice. If you were to look at the blueprint for the RMT exam, you would find that it mimics the Model Curriculum in these same content areas. So, with students of approved schools showing such a higher instance of success on the RMT exam, does that mean that as a student of a non-approved school all is lost? Absolutely not! There are hundreds of training programs in the market today, with only a handful currently represented on the AHDI-approved list. CERTIFICATION While transcriptionists do not provide hands-on patient care, they are part of a critical process to create an accurate record of that care and play a vital role in risk management on the allied healthcare team. The application of informed judgment based on clinical knowledge and understanding of the diagnostic process will continue to be part of the evolv- ing role of complex narrative in the EHR.
