MINDA informs.................
Edition 2/2006
Fully automatic intermediate storage with first in / first
out function – flexible and dynamic
At the end of 2005/beginning of 2006, MINDA successfully replaced a buffer station
with fixed storage positions at VPK in Raamsdonksveer (NL), which had been in
operation for approx. ten years, with a fully automatic buffer station offering
considerable improvements in flexibility and quality.
An automatic intermediate storage with fixed storage positions had been installed in the
Raamsdonksveer plant in the mid 90’s. In this system, the stacks were positioned in front of
the selected storage line by transfer cars and subsequently stored by a satellite conveyor in
fixed storage positions in the intermediate storage.
However, as a result of the disadvantages of this system, the management decided to
completely replace the intermediate storage after a short operating period.
Old buffer system before replacement:
Storage and retrieval of the corrugated
board by transfer car on fixed cross bars,
last in / first out function
Disadvantages of the old storage system:
The first block to be stored was retrieved last, which often led to the product drying out
excessively
Frequent rearrangement of the products was necessary due to poor accessibility
The products required for orders were not readily accessible
The existing storage area was not sufficiently utilised
Insufficient product throughput
Data security is missing
Mechanical protective fences for the transfer car track obstructed observation of the
intermediate storage
Frequent manual intervention was necessary, putting the safety of the staff at risk
Inadequate services

The management at VPK Raamsdonksveer decided to install a fully automatic two-section
intermediate storage with plastic chain conveyors from MINDA in order to meet the
increasing requirements of their key-account customers for modern and market-orientated
production flow.
Automatic intermediate storage with plastic chain
conveyors from MINDA
Advantages of the new intralogistics:
Automatic operation without manual
intervention
First in / first out function, virtually
dispensing with the need for
rearrangement
The products are stored in the order in
which they are required by the
converting machine for starting a job
Optimum utilisation of the storage area
as a result of differentiated storage line
widths and electrical coupling of two
adjacent lines for products with large
chop lengths
The two-sectional design allows
products to be positioned in and
retrieved from one storage line at the
same time
Improved throughput and quality due
to more constant resting periods
between production and conversion
Automatic re-storage of the products in
the event of tool, block or material
faults
The buffer station is equipped with
plastic chain conveyors for transport
without “sheet walk effect”
The plant was put into operation on the 2 nd of January 2006 following a three-week
installation period which had a negligible effect on production.
The plastic chain conveyor was granted European Patent EP 1514814 on 22.03.06,
therefore, the plastic chain conveyor with glide surface made of derived timber
product from MINDA is now legally protected by patent.
