Dear Church,
We feel so blessed to be a part of the body of
Christ here at FUMC. We sincerely appreciate the
love and support lavished on us after the passing of
our brother-in-law, Jim Taylor. He leaves a big hole in
our family. Thank you for the prayers, calls, cards,
emails, food and visits. It has been overwhelming.
Gratefully,
Dear FUMC,
Just want to thank your Missions Committee
personally for your recent, generous grant toward our
hospital work with kids in central Texas. We will soon
go to Austin, Temple, and Waco to make good use of
these funds!
your thoughtfulness will never leave us.
Dear Church Members,
Thanks so much for your help in gathering
school supplies for our Burnet County children in foster
care. We know how very important it is for children
to begin with the items asked for on their supply
list. We appreciate your help in making this possible.
will go to St. Frederick Baptist Church to help pay costs
of developing a set of plans that meet requirements for submitting
a construction permit application to the city of Marble
Falls. This is a MUST DO item to have accurate enough information
for developing a detailed estimate as well as meeting
code requirements for construction. We have a good start
from our July lunch proceeds but could need as much as
$1,300 more depending on the generosity of the professional
firm who does the plans. Please plan to support this very worthy
project and enjoy a good meal...not BBQ this time, but just
as good!
Today’s Message
In the time that Wade and I have been married (7+years), I have learned a great deal from this man of agriculture.
My previous exposure to agricultural issues was limited to growing up in an agriculturally dominant community.
Farmers grew a variety of row crops (cotton, milo, corn, soy beans, etc.) and rice…..lots and lots of rice. While working in
the bank I visited farmers to do crop inspections with their loan officer (what a joke – I didn’t know enough to inspect the
grass in my yard, much less an agricultural crop. I was sent to make them happy and help them see that we were the
only bank they needed!) Needless to say, agricultural issues were basically foreign to me.
One of the terms I’ve heard Wade frequently use is “demonstration plot” or “test plot.” He accompanies extension
specialists onto privately owned land and they test a variety of chemicals on things like cactus. The Master Gardeners
have a demonstration plot at Shady Grove Elementary in Burnet where they test growing methods for a variety of
roses.
Perhaps that is why a specific phrase in a book I’m reading recently jumped out at me. The book is called,
Shaped by God’s Heart: The Passion and Practices of Missional Churches, by Milfred Minatrea. In it, the following quote
jumped out at me when he says the church is “God’s demonstration plot in the world.” He goes on to say that “its very
existence demonstrates that God’s redemptive reign has already begun. Its very presence invites the world to watch, listen,
examine, and consider accepting God’s reign as a superior way of living” (pp137-138). While I don’t particularly care
for his choice of words as the “superior” way of living, I do hope that we as the church can demonstrate to the world the
love God offers in such a powerful way that our very witness draws others to want to be in relationship with God.
So my friends I would ask you, are we a demonstration plot of God’s love in the world here in Marble Falls? Do
we reflect His love through our witness? What if every church meeting we held, every class we shared, every worship
service we celebrated demonstrated this kind of powerful love? Let us review all of our ministries so that we not seek to
be the “superior” way of living, but the desired and longed for way of living in a hurting world. Thanks be to God for the
opportunity!
Blessings
Ellen
