The Secretary’s Jottings
Good evening everyone. Welcome to Woodstock Park for this Emirates Preliminary round FA
Cup replay.
Our visitors are Pagham from the Southern Combination Football League. Welcome to their
players, officials and supporters and this evenings match officials. The winners of todays tie are
away to Carshalton Athletic or Walton & Hersham on Saturday 2nd September.
I was unable to make the journey on Saturday because of “man flu” which everyone knows is
the worst type of cold you can get! I understand, however, that the match was very hard fought
and even throughout. We expected a tough match against Pagham who have started the season
very well and that’s exactly what we got.
Our last home match was the eagerly awaited tie against Herne Bay who fielded many of our
last season’s development squad in their team plus our last season’s captain, Jono Richardson.
Our 3-0 victory was well deserved and was an excellent all-round performance from all the
squad. Some really good football was played by our newly assembled squad and augurs well
for the future.
We were scheduled tonight to play our Kent Senior Cup match at Faversham. This will now be
played on Tuesday September 5 th .
There were a number of surprising results (to me) in the FA Cup. The biggest was South Park’s
defeat by Haywards Heath (0-2). Carshalton being held at home to Walton Casuals (1-1), Lewes
also held at home (Newhaven 3-3) and Cray Wanderers losing at home to Sevenoaks Town
(2-3) were other surprises. I watched two ties. The first was Sheppey United V Hastings United.
Sheppey had four good chances to score in this match and did not take any of them. Hastings
United scored two quick goals early in the second half to seal the tie. The attendance was 397
which was the 3rd highest of the round. Three ex Brickies featured for Sheppey, Tom Brunt,
Tom Loynes and Hicham Akhazzan.
My second match was Herne Bay V Chessington and Hook United. Chessington and Hook are
one of the lowest ranked teams in the competition being in the Combined Counties League Division
One. Chessington conceded two goals in the first half but scored immediately after the half
time break.
Despite some good play from Chessington they were unable to score again. The difference between
the two teams was another ex-Brickie in Jono Richardson. He caused no end of trouble
in the Chessington penalty area and dominated the Herne Bay penalty area. Without him the
score could have been very different.
Well done to Ashford United, who we play on Bank Holiday Monday, for defeating Redhill (3-1)
after losing their manager and a number of players.
We have a number of brand new but old-style official yellow Chelsea FC shirts for sale
(Samsung sponsor). There are also second-hand Chelsea tops and other used shirts and socks
for sale. Please see me if you are interested. Our own Mitre replica shirts will be available soon.
Next match for us is another trip to Sussex when on Saturday we visit Lewes for a 3:00 PM kick
off.
