The ‘modest entrepreneur’ Although he is undoubtedly one of Scotland’s most successful businessmen, John Martin, the Group’s founder and Chairman, prefers not to seek the public limelight. He is much more at home working with the Group’s Directors in overseeing the ongoing building and refurbishments of new and existing sites, ensuring that every site meets his exacting standards. Success on the scale of the John Martin Group takes persistence, much hard work, and absolute dedication. John Martin has worked for over forty years to establish his company as a dominant and respected motor trade business. In recent years, John Martin has had to overcome what has been both a personal and professional tragedy with the sudden loss of son and heir, John Martin Junior, who was much loved and respected by the Martin family and all the staff of the John Martin Group. Subsequently, John Martin Senior has seen the company through this loss and the subsequent restructuring, emerging as dedicated as ever with his employees remaining steadfastly loyal. The John Martin Group enjoys the benefit of some of the UK’s most experienced motor trade staff - 24% of employees have over 10 years service. In fact, the second person John Martin ever employed retired in 2007 after 41 years of service. The principles which John Martin still applies to his business are those he learned in the beginning. As he puts it, “the difference between success and failure is in the preparation of the car in the first place, and then in the way the customers are handled from the moment they come into the dealership.” It is a tribute to John Martin’s steadfast dedication to customer service that customers from his original lockup ‘down the lane’, established in the sixties, remain loyal clients of the John Martin Group today.
