at O’Donnell’s Pub and formed 

the Southern Pines Rugby Club. 

Make Plans To Attend The 2nd Annual “Pours In The Pines” 

The 2nd annual “Pours In The 

Pines” event will be held at the 

Weymouth Center on Saturday 

September 9th from 2-6 pm. 

The event is being held to benefit 

the “Duskin Stephens Foundation”, 

which helps the families of 

fallen “Special Forces”soldiers 

with many programs and the 

Southern Pines Women’s Rugby 

team - 2 local non-profits that 

support different aspects of our 

local community. 

Brought to you by Ashley Sparks, 

Founder of the non-profit entity 

AKANP, Inc which benefits local 

causes in the Southern Pines 

community. Many thanks to 

volunteer Patrick O’Donnell owner 

of O’Donnell’s Pub for his help 

with promoting this event. 

There will be a wide selection of 

more than 50 craft beers brewed 

by over 25 breweries based 

across the United States at this 

wonderful event. 

Southern Pines Brewing will be 

offering their Moore IPA, Texas 

Rig and Dead Red. The Railhouse 

Brewery will have a selection 

that will include Elk Red and 

Pine Land Pale. 

Entertainment will be brought to 

you by the the country rock duo, 

Ryan and Justin Harris of the 

band McKenzie Mills. These artists 

hail from West End and now 

reside in Nashville, TN. 

There will plenty of delicious food 

from local chef’s provided by their 

“Food Trucks” including Market 

Place, Stacks and JD’s Cajun.

The club joined the matrix in 2013 

and started a non profit to grow 

rugby in Moore County. Today 

they have a middle school team, 

a high school team, a Women’s 

Club and Championship Men’s 

Club. 

In 2017 the Men’s Club participated 

in the Final Four and were 

ranked #3 in the United States. 

The Women’s Club is currently 

recruiting new members for the

Growing up on McKenzies Mill 

Road in West End, NC they captured 

the artist name, “McKenzies 

Mill”. 

McKenzies Mill is also proud to 

announce that they will be introduced 

in September at the Carolina 

Music Awards contest, which 

will select the Carolina Artists of 

the Year Award. 

They will be entering the new single 

“Middle Of Nowhere” with the 

Radio Station 93.9, “Carolina 

Country” in Myrtle Beach, SC this

Ryan and Justin Harris of the 

country duo, McKenzies Mill will 

be performing a benefit concert 

at the 2nd Annual “Pours In the 

Pines’ event on Saturday, September 

9th from 2-6 pm at the 

Weymouth Center, benefitting the 

Duskin Stephens Foundation and 

the Southern Pines Womens Rugby 

Team.

Nashville has become home base 

for the band for the past 11 years 

after performing their first concert 

at O’Donnell’s Pub in Southern 

Pines. 

Ryan and Justin will be returning 

to Southern Pines where they began 

their professional careers after 

being on the road performing 

recent concerts in Milwaukee, WI, 

Roanoke, VA and Seven Lakes. 

The “Pours In The Pines” event 

with these artists headlining the 

show will help the Duskins & Stephens 

Foundation, which supports 

families of Special Forces 

soldiers. 

The foundation was recently begun 

by teammates of Mike Duskin 

and Riley Stephens whom were 

killed in action in Wardak Province, 

Afghanistan in 2012. 

The foundation hosts multiple annual 

events that support the families 

of fallen members of Special 

Operations Forces and the educational 

needs of children of Special 

Operations Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen 

and Marines. 

The band which has toured nationally, 

loves to get back home, 

support community charitable 

causes and to appreciate and embrace 

their small town “roots” of 

Moore County. 

They still maintain a presence in 

the community by hosting charitable 

events as “Pours In The

They are very excited to be finalists 

with the “Unsigned Only” 

competiion, produced by the 

prestigious team of International 

Songwriting Competition, (ISC) 

where Ryan and Justin have an 

astonishing two, out of the fourteen 

country music songs in final 

contention. 

These two songs were co-written 

by the Ryan and Justin. The final 

round will be judged by music celebrities 

and industry insiders. 

Artists must not have any major 

record label affiliation and the 

grand prize winner will be awarded 

$20,000, will receive one-onone 

mentoring by an elite group 

of record company executives. 

They will also receive a multitude 

of othe prizes. Some of the musical 

artists that will be judges include 

Montgomery Gentry, Delbert 

McClinton, David Crowder, Lucero 

as well as editors and writers from 

national music publications. 

The winners will be announced 

in early September. Both of their 

incredible new songs that are in 

the finals, “Middle Of Nowhere” 

and “Willie” as well as the single 

release “Just Kickin’ It” can be 

purchased online with i-Tunes. 

The winners of the 2017 contest 

will be tabulated and voted via 

Facebook. 

Ryan and Justin still find time to 

write new songs and just finished 

producing two new singles with a 

very well known country music 

producer on the national scene, 

Derek Wells and his father Kent 

Wells. 

Kent is a veteran Nashville musician 

and Grammy nominated producer. 

They recently cut two new songs 

at the state of the art world class 

studios with Kent’s production 

team in Nashville. 

Kent has produced numerous 

gold and platinum projects as well 

as various #1 Billboard hits. 

Wrangler jeans have been endorsed 

by the Dale Earnhardt 

family, “King” George Strait, Jason 

Aldean and now you can add 

the McKenzies Mill Band, Ryan

POURS IN THE PINES

The Duskin and Stephens Foundation 

began in 2013 by a small 

group of Green Berets in the “3rd 

Special Forces Group”, based out 

of Fort Bragg to honor fallen teammates 

and support their families. 

Close friends and former team 

members of Operation Detachment 

Alpha (ODA) 3116, Riley Stephens 

was killed on September 

28, 2012 and teammate Mike 

Duskin, lost his life on October 

23rd, 2012 in Wardak, Afghanistan 

by small arms fire. An ODA 

is a 12-man team designed to be 

self-sufficient that partners with 

foreign forces. 

Riley, was serving with ODA 3111 

and Mike with ODA 3116 were 

attached to Afghan Commando 

units in eastern Afghanistan when 

they were killed. Team member 

Mike was killed when the ODA was 

searching out the insurgent group 

in the same valley where Riley lost 

his life approximately one month 

earlier. In the midst of the conflict 

friends and fellow warriors Joe 

Shiro and Justin Marquez were 

also killed in Wardak and Ryan 

Savard was killed in Kunduz. 

Two members of the group being 

from Philadelphia, PA recall the 

days of attending parties at local 

bars to help a family in need, 

called a Beef and Beer, which is 

the concept for the event. To memorialize 

their fallen friends they 

held a fundraiser in May of 2013, 

at the Fair Barn intended to be a 

“one time event and party”. 

The event they planned took place 

just before Memorial Day in conjunction 

with the “USASOC”, US 

Army Special Operations Command 

Gold Star Week which memorializes 

fallen Special Operations 

Team members that paid 

the ultimate sacrifice the previous 

year. This event they held in 2013, 

the D&SF Beef & Beer event was 

so successful the group just held 

their 5th annual event last May. 

These events and others continue 

to honor and help support the 

“families left behind” with the 

Freed-OM yoga event and support 

to CxC Foundation with their National 

Coast to Coast Motorcycle 

Ride. “The Pours in The Pines”, 

“Beef & Beer Golf Tournament” 

and many other events to raise 

funds to help support the families. 

The foundation supports the families 

of the fallen warriors in numerous 

ways including healing 

programs designed to combat the 

effects of PTS, TBI and loss of a 

loved one, and youth scholarships 

for children of active duty members 

of the Special Operations 

community. The foundation has 

22 active scholarship recipients. 

In addition to scholarships for kids 

to attend private primary schools, 

they provide direct support to 

Gold Star families and the healing 

of Special Operations Members 

and families through the Kilimanjaro 

Climb for Valor, special 

events, community involvement, 

yoga, meditation, and exercise 

programs. 

The foundation has set the following 

attainable goals; a Scholarship 

Trust with an annual payout 

of $150,000 with a $2mm target, 

the “Robin Hood” Scholarship 

Fund a $10,000 fund for SOF 

families w/ immediate unexpected 

need and the foundation will 

issue Scholarships through fundraising 

until a trust is established 

with 3-year $3000/year awards 

planned in 2018.

Greetings From Girl Scout 

Cadette Troop #118 

Southern Pines, NC 

Our cadette Troop is participating in a 

new program “Find A Rock” 

Each girl from our troop collected rocks and painted 

several rocks with inspirational words and pictures. 

We then hid them throughout Southern Pines. 

When someone finds one of our rocks they take a picture 

of the rock, where they found it and then posts it 

on our facebook page, Rock On SP. Then that person can take 

the rock and hide it again anywhere! In the county, the state or 

the U.S. It is a fun game! 

Outr Troop wants to spread positive images 

and inspire people throughout their day.

This report provides housing market statistics and trends to help 

you better gauge Southern Pines market conditions. 

Already this year, 307 homes have sold and 9 of those are horse 

farms. These homes have been selling at an average of 97% of the 

listing price. 

This is a strong indication that the demand for housing in Southern 

Pines remains high. 

Looking back at the last 30 days, 32 homes have sold with an average 

sale price of $333,240. 

The average number of days on the market was 143, down from 

last month. There are currently 58 homes under contract and 262 

homes are for sale. 

While statistics are useful in establishing trends, they don’t 

necessarily reflect specific properties or neighborhood trends.

“We have a real dichotomy 

here,” Dice says. “We have 

higher incomes, but a lot of 

these households are retired 

residents. Many local families 

with children are struggling just 

to provide food. In the Moore 

County School system, currently 

43 percent of the schoolchildren 

qualify for the reduced or free 

lunch program.” 

In one interview session, a father 

of four stood out. He worked a 

full-time job at a manufacturing 

plant locally, but his wages were 

low; he learned his job was going 

to be eliminated. While meeting 

with Christmas for Moore, he insisted 

he did not want anything 

for himself but only Christmas 

gifts for his four children. 

“When the family’s gifts were 

delivered, hugs and Christmas 

wishes were exchanged between 

the giver and receiver,” 

Dice recalled. “With tears in his 

eyes, the father remarked how 

his family has been truly blessed 

by the generosity extended in his 

time of real need. This is what 

Moore County is about: helping 

those in need.”

What happens when you drop 

your mobile into water? Data 

can be wiped, all the pictures 

are gone, the screen no longer 

responds to our fi nger swipes 

and once that wet stuff gets into 

the fi ne, delicate circuitry that

If it’s been in water, remove the 

SIM card, or any other cards, 

storage, peripherals etc. Do not 

blow dry it, or stick it back in water. 

Nor take it apart if you don’t 

know what you’re doing; 

The very best course of action is 

to take your phone to a qualifi ed 

repair person and allow them to 

break the heart-breaking news - 

or not! 

Absolutely do not lie to your 

network or insurance provider! 

There are internal indicators 

that show if a mobile phone has

September 16th against Camp 

Lejeune. Both teams practice at 

the National Athletic Village, “the 

NAV” at 6:00 pm. Women on 

Monday and Wednesday and the 

men on Tuesday and Thursday 

evenings. 

Both the women’s and men’s rugby 

clubs invite anyone over the 

age of 18 to stop by one of the 

practices to watch and to possibly 

join the club. 

They are currently recruiting for 

the 2017-2018 season. You don’t 

have to have any sports or athletic 

background to become a rugby 

player. 

According to Ms. Anna Brown, 

President of the Board of the 

Southern Pines Women’s Rugby 

Club, “there are basicaly 2 seasons 

whereby one consists of 15 

players on the pitch and the other 

with only 7. The 15’s start in the 

fall and the team takes a break 

just after January if they fail to 

make the playoffs. 

The women’s club started recently 

in August of 2016 and 

are known as the “Kelts” or “The 

Women of Mayhem”. 

She added that “their philosophy 

ties in with the true spirit of rugby 

which is to respect their teammates, 

the coaches, the opposition 

and be a part of the community 

and have fun”. 

Anna said “it’s like playing soccer 

and football with no pads. 

The team members are properly 

taught how to tackle the opposing 

members since there are no pads 

for protection. 

The players stay continually in 

the match unless they are bleeding 

and come out until the bleeding 

stops. Then a “blood sub” is 

substituted for the player until the 

bleeding subsides.” 

The rugby game is played in two 

40 minute halves usually on a 

grass fi eld known as a “pitch” 

about 200 feet long by 300 feet 

wide. At each end of the fi eld are 

the goal posts and an in-goal area. 

Each team defends one end and 

attempts to score points through 

tries and goals. 

After a successful kick-off the 

ball is in general play and can be 

passed, kicked, caught, picked up 

or grounded by any player. The ball 

can be kicked in any direction, but 

must be passed backwards. 

A try worth fi ve points is scored 

when a team grounds the ball in 

the opposition’s in-goal. 

A conversion a kick at a goal, is 

then attempted by either placing 

or drop kicking the ball between 

the H-shaped goal posts and 

above the crossbar, if successful 

this is worth two extra points. 

You can go out to watch them 

practice to decide if you want to 

join. Players don’t have to purchase 

a uniform but there is a one 

time fee of $100.00. 

Upon entering “matrix” the competitive 

season leading to the 

playoffs, there is a small expense 

that is necessary for personal insurance.

The Ben Miller Band was formed in 2005 in Joplin, Missouri. The 

band’s lineup consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Ben Miller, 

bassist (playing a homemade one-string washtub bass) Scott 

Leeper, and percussionist Doug Dicharry. The Ben Miller Band 

combines elements of folk, blues, bluegrass, and country into 

their music. Originally, The Ben Miller Band’s sound had been 

self-described by the band as “Ozark Stomp” but in reference to 

their label, is now referred to as “Mudstomp”. 

On May 22, 2011 their hometown of Joplin, Missouri was destroyed 

by a tornado. In response to the tragedy, the band established 

a charity to help restore the community. They also released 

a benefi t album titled Record for Joplin. The Ben Miller band won a 

slot as the opener ZZ Top in 2013. Their performances with ZZ Top 

garnered praise and attention from reviewers. They were signed to 

New West Records later in that year. They play concerts in the US 

and Europe.

BATTLESHIP PUZZLE 

BATTLESHIP RULES 

Each Battleship puzzle represents an ocean with a hidden fleet of ships, 

which may be oriented horizontally or vertically within the grid such 

that no ship touches another, not even diagonally. 

The numbers on the right and on the bottom of the grid show how many 

squares in the corresponding row and column are occupied by ship 

segments. Occasionally some squares may contain given ship or water 

segments to help start the puzzle. The object is to discover where all 

ships are located. 

Classic Battleship puzzles come in various sizes, with different fleets 

for each size. For example, the fleet of a Classic Battleship 10x10 puzzle 

consists of one battleship, two cruisers, three destroyers and four 

submarines. 

Submarines consist of a single round segment, destroyers have two 

end segments, cruisers have two end segments and a middle segment, 

and the battleship is constructed of two end segments and two middle 

segments. 

Any remaining squares in the grid contain water segments, which are 

shown as a symbol of water or as an “X”.
