Mayweather finds perfect way to retire,
McGregor eyes more money-fights
• Reuters
Floyd Mayweather did exactly
what was expected of him when
he outclassed mixed martial arts
champion Conor McGregor in their
crossover bout on Saturday to secure
a final victory in an illustrious
career that ends with an unmatched
50-0 record.
“This was my last fight tonight.
For sure. I didn’t have to come
back. We do foolish things sometimes
but I am not a dam fool. If I
see an opportunity to make $300
million in 36 minutes, why not. I
had to do.”
“But this is the last one, you
have my word on it.”
Now the student is ready to become
the teacher with Mayweather
saying the next chapter of his life
will be as a trainer, like the father
who taught him.
McGregor, however, is a different
story. He has made no secret of
his desire for more.
Asked what he liked most
about his boxing experience, Money
Mayweather prompted UFC
lightweight champion McGregor to
Quote of the Week
I sledge at them because they
do it too. I like to sledge even
when I am batting, I enjoy it.
say the cash.
The problem is that there are
few prospective opponents for him
in either boxing or MMA who can
generate that kind of interest.
McGregor is most likely to return
to the octagon to fight Nate
Diaz.
Diaz gave McGregor his first
UFC defeat in a 170-pound matchup
in 2016, which McGregor
avenged months later with an
epic five-round decision victory
at the T-Mobile Arena, before going
on to win the organisation’s
lightweight title.
With the teak-tough Californian
more than a match for McGregor in
terms of trash talk, a trilogy fight to
bring that rivalry to a close is about
the only thing that would make
sense and the required amount of
dollars, for McGregor at this point.
Liton Das should be in the
Test Team
Liton Das was included in the 14
man squad for the two tests against
Australia but unfortunately, even
with a first class average of 49 and
consistent performances, he failed to
break into the team. After the loss at
Chittagong, it became all the more apparent
as to why his inclusion would
have made more sense.
Firstly, in a top order consisting of
4 left-handers, Nathan Lyon became
all the more dangerous, with his disciplined
line and length. It prompted
the team to move the right handed
Nasir Hossain to number 4 in Bangladesh’s
second innings. It didn’t work
out well for him unfortunately. If Liton
was in the team, chances are, he’d be
keeping and therefore be able to let
Mushfiqur Rahim up the order to bat
at number three per say.
Secondly, Liton is a better keeper
than Mushfiqur while also being a solid
batsman that is technically correct.
He has the makings of being a success
in Tests even if he is to bat at number
5 or 6. The problem though seems to
be with Mushfiqur’s reluctance to give
up the gloves. Even though he took a
stunner to get rid of Matt Renshaw in
the 1st innings, he missed a stumping
chance of David Warner later in
Australian 1st innings.
Wicket keeping is easily the most
physically taxing job in cricket, and
especially in Tests and Mushfiqur’s
batting can only be benefited if he gives
up the gloves. Being arguably the best
batsman in the team, that’s where his
main focus should also be. There have
already been calls from fans to drop
Imrul Kayes or Soumya Sarkar or both
but in all honesty, not playing Liton has
been a bigger miss than anything else,
especially with the tour to South Africa
coming up next. He has his highest Test
score against the Proteas too.
Supporter
Liton could have easily been
accommodated for if Soumya was
dropped and Imrul played as an
opener, where his partnership average
with Tamim is a healthy 48 with over
2000 runs scored. Then again, a case
could also be made for Soumya as he
still scored more runs than Imrul in the
last 10 innings in Tests and is a much
better fielder than Imrul.
Whatever the case, it’s clear that
this was a missed opportunity to
get the batting order right and win
a series against the mighty Aussies,
because of constant tinkering with
the batting order, playing players out
of position, defensive captaincy, lax
fielding and imperfect team selection.
Let’s hope Liton finally gets the
chance he so richly deserves in the
tour to South Africa.
