The Showroom Cinema has<br />
been open now for over 22<br />
years. In Europe, this kind of<br />
cinema might be known as<br />
‘art-house’ or often referred<br />
to as a cultural cinema, but the term<br />
that best encapsulates all aspects<br />
of this Sheffi eld-based organisation<br />
is independent. A registered charity,<br />
the Showroom prides itself on a fi rm<br />
spirit of independence – setting it<br />
apart from the many other cinemas<br />
that make up Sheffi eld’s big screen<br />
offer. All fi lms are hand-selected,<br />
programmed in-house and chosen to<br />
both provide titles that will be popular<br />
and in-demand but also to highlight<br />
the unknown, the different and<br />
sometimes the more challenging.<br />
When people think of independent<br />
fi lm it is harder to defi ne – in its<br />
most literal sense this refers to<br />
fi lms made outside of the major<br />
studio-system in Hollywood, and<br />
to a lesser extent it also means<br />
non-mainstream. However, when<br />
independent cinemas are discussed,<br />
the term has come to describe a<br />
boutique experience with luxury<br />
touches and high pricing. It is very<br />
important to me, and to many industry<br />
colleagues that independence reasserts<br />
its true meaning and that the<br />
truly independent elements of our<br />
businesses are writ large.<br />
The Showroom’s programme<br />
is one of the broadest and most<br />
diverse in the country, with over 550<br />
different fi lms from over 50 countries.<br />
This breadth of choice is curated<br />
in-house and often in partnership<br />
with local organisations, community<br />
groups, festivals and of course both<br />
of Sheffi eld’s great universities. This<br />
commitment to partnership working is<br />
another element that is made possible<br />
