An Open Letter To Community 

As I write this letter of resignation, 

I do so with much sadness and 

disappointment. For the past 4 

years I have volunteered for various 

Committees and ultimately 

was elected to the SLW Board 

of Directors. I initially served as 

the Communications Director 

and then was elected as Board 

President. The Community then 

reelected me to the Board and I 

served as President again, for a 

total of 18 months. 

On August 30th a bombshell was 

dropped on me at a special Executive 

Session Meeting. The meeting 

was called by two Board members 

(who were appointed to the 

Board, not elected by the Membership).

The 2017 Carolina Cup Invitational 

Open Swim Event was hosted 

by the Sandhills Sandsharks 

Swim Team. There was approximately 

60 swimmers participating 

in the open water event. The 

event took place at Lake Echo on 

Friday September 8th thru Sunday 

September 10th. This open water 

event featured a men’s and women’s 

3k race and a 2k race. There 

are identical race formats for senior 

swimmers. Paddlers and escort 

boats were spaced throughout 

the course to provide help to 

swimmers as needed. If a swimmer 

touches an escort craft, he/ 

she must withdraw from the race. 

The event is held under the Sanction 

of USA Swimming, Inc., issued

Natures Fury 

Being married to an entrepreneur 

we have developed a multitude 

of businesses and Real Estate 

ventures throughout the US. 

We have endured 4 major hurricanes 

at our home in South 

Florida at PGA Village, Jeanne, 

Francis, Wilma, Katrina at Bay 

St. Louis and experienced Hugo 

when we lived on Hilton Head 

Island. 

At our home in Santa Barbara we 

have seen mudslides, forest fires 

near Napa, floods in Scottsdale 

during the August Monsoons and 

several earthquakes at our house 

in Lake Tahoe. As a native of 

Colorado I have seen the floods 

and we both experienced Tornadoes 

and blizzards as well as 

-30 temperatures at our condo in 

Breckenridge. 

I can tell you from first hand experience 

nothing compares to the 

misery of a hurricane. You see 

on the Weather Channel, scenes 

of shoppers getting plywood, 

Publix shelves with no food or 

water...that’s just the beginning. 

But as you go to the stores you 

can feel the tension and impending 

doom on everyone’s mind. 

Our home was newer and built 

to post Andrew Hurricane standards, 

as opposed to frame housing 

and had shutters covering all 

glass as required by law. Wind 

would be no problem but water 

and flash flooding would be a 

concern. The wind bent back 

one of the shutters and we could 

see the Palm trees being bent 

over to the ground on the golf 

course. The howling winds were 

very scary. 

Seasoned hurricane Floridians 

know to fill up the bathtub with 

water, have canned food in the 

pantry and to get gas, and more 

gas in every container you have 

before it runs out. Get all the 

cash you can carry from the 

bank since the ATM’s will be 

wiped out and be empty. The 

major problem, “No Electricity”. 

After the hurricane passes 

over, the despair sets in immediately. 

No A/C, can’t use the 

stove, refrigerator can only last 

a few days... Eating hot dogs 

made on the propane grill gets 

real old fast. Gas stations are 

closed since they can’t pump 

gas or accept credit cards OR 

Cash. Grocery stores are closed, 

restaurants, fast food places 

and basically everything is 

closed and non-operational. 

Lines form where a business 

has a generator. This can last 

weeks or months. 

All of Mother Natures other 

events fall pale to a hurricane. 

Most of the time the other 

events are over very quick and 

things get back to normal. 

The last hurricane in Florida 

we mandatorily evacuated and 

watched her hit the Florida coast 

from the comfort of my in-laws 

house in Seven Lakes...The 

perfect sanctuary to be during a 

hurricane. Please Donate

The metamorphis that began at 

the begnning of the summer to 

transform the neglected 6 tennis 

courts formerly known as the Seven 

Lakes Tennis Club is nearing 

completion. 

After an illustrious past including 

an exhibition match held on July 

12, 1977 between Roscoe Tanner 

and Arthur Ashe, the new “Seven 

Lakes Racquet Club” is undergoing 

a major renovation. New owners 

Katie Carpenter and Canyn 

Russell have begun to completely 

refurbish the courts into hard-tru

Pinecrest HS and is very excited 

to return to the Sandhills,” 

Canyn said. A graduate of Bryant 

University in Rhode Island, 

Dana played Division 1 Men’s 

tennis with great success, winning 

over 180 matches, earning 

multiple all conference selections. 

Carpenter learned her tennis 

game beginning in 1984 after 

moving to Seven Lakes. Her former 

instructor Terrell West returned 

for the Grand Opening.

McKenzies Mill 

Benefit Concert 

The Seven Lakes Business Guild received over $3,500 as net 

proceeds from the McKenzies Mill Concert These funds are 

utilized to repair pot holes on village streets and in parking 

lots throughout the business community. 

Proceeds were a combination of donations from businesses, 

beer/wine/soda sales, gate donations and 50/50 drawing. 

In addition to business donations to make the concert possible, 

the Guild is especially grateful to concert goers for donating 

$531 at the gates and $356 for the 50/50 drawing.

There is a defi nite concern among 

the business community at Seven 

Lakes with regard to the Highway 

211 road wideing project to commence 

construction in 2020. 

According to Randy Merritt, “as a 

merchant owner I have particular 

concern that the turning limitations 

will have a negative effect 

on our customer volume and 

as a business owner in the Seven 

Lakes Business Village I am 

also concerned that ingress and 

egress issues that will be caused 

by the proposed median at not 

only the Friendly Mart, but at Dollar 

General and McDonalds. This 

will put additional strain on village 

streets such as Trade, Grant and 

MacDougall…..as well as the privately 

owned parking lots adjacent 

to HWY 211, Grant and Trade 

Streets.” 

The only source of income derived 

for the Asociation is that which 

comes from the Seven Lakes Area 

Business Guild. These funds originate 

from member dues and fundraisers 

such as the chili cookoff 

and McKenzies Mill concert. 

In addition to pot hole repair, the 

Seven Lakes Guild maintains electrical 

power connections on Grant 

Street and the grassy area beside 

First Bank where the Annual 

Christmas tree lighting has been 

most often held. The Guild also 

pays a landscape contractor to 

maintain the grass area and the 

shrubbery located there. 

Merritt continues, “The point that 

needs to be made, and one we 

tried very hard to make in 2010 

during the incorporation effort is 

that the Seven Lakes/West End 

area, at 6,000+ in population is 

a very large area to have public 

roads on which the county or state 

spend not one penny of tax dollars 

to maintain. It is a fact many residents 

do not know….and it’s not 

their fault….but a fact nonetheless. 

The group of which I was a part 

in 2010, Incorporatesevenlakes. 

com, mounted an effort to incorporate 

the West End/Seven Lakes 

area while keeping the gates at 

Seven Lakes West, North and 

South. In saying that, I am not trying 

to “stir that pot again”…..but 

part of our reasoning was to gain 

badly needed funds to maintain 

roads used by the public but not 

paid for by the public. 

The majority of the village road 

footage is not up to a suffi cient 

standard to be taken over by the 

state, and to do so would take 

hundreds of thousands, and probably 

millions of dollars….and that 

money just doesn’t exist and is unobtainable 

by any current entity. 

These are Mr. Merritt’s opinions 

& may be, but are not necessarily 

shared by other business owners 

or other Seven Lakes residents.”

to begin during the summer of 

2018, with construction beginning 

in the summer of 2020.

on August 22. 

The meeting began with a Board 

Member immediately making a 

motion to remove me from the 

Presidency. The reason given was 

“lack of confi dence”. 

The motion was quickly seconded 

and opened for questions. Two 

of the Board members and myself 

were dumbfounded. We were 

speechless. Quickly, an obviously 

“predetermined” vote was taken 

and four Board members voted 

me out. This whole process took 

less than 5 minutes, at which 

point I left the meeting. 

I was called the next day by the 

new President to inquire if I would 

take the Communications Director’s 

position. I declined and said, 

“You folks wanted me off the 

Board, so I am Resigning.” 

I have felt supported by the Community 

as a whole. However, there 

have been a few “families” that 

have tried extremely hard to make 

sure that my time, as President, 

was tremendously diffi cult. 

They went so far as to send “hate 

mail” directed at me to the Community, 

post childish posters 

about me in the mail house, and 

go door-to-door to convince Members 

to vote for someone else 

leading up to this past March election. 

Even with all of their tactics, 

I was still reelected to the Board 

and again, reelected to the Presidency 

with a unanimous vote. 

With all this support being shown 

by the Board, the August 22 Board 

meeting really caught me off guard 

and remains a very unpleasant experience, 

to say the least. 

Open Letter To Community

My biggest regret is that during 

the August 22 Board Meeting, I 

should have moved the discussion 

about the Beacon Ridge Club 

House Commons Agreement to 

the front of the meeting and tabled 

the Board of Directors’ agenda until 

that discussion was completed. 

There is no question in my mind 

that the fi rst speaker to discuss 

this issue clearly knew about the 

three-minute rule, but deliberately 

chose to ignore it. 

I was forced to invoke the rule, 

which was established by this current 

Board. The rule was put in 

place to allow multiple Members 

time to speak, rather than having 

one or two people take up the allotted 

time, as had happened several 

times in previous meetings. 

I wish my reaction at this Board 

meeting would have been different, 

but once the same small 

group of detractors, known to 

many as “the Family, rallied other 

people in attendance to become 

disruptive, it was a lost cause. 

Their goal was to make it sound 

as though the Board was trying to 

sneak something illegal into the 

Club House Commons Covenants, 

without Membership discussion. 

This is simply not true. 

The annexation clause was a critical 

aspect to enable the sale of 

Beacon Ridge. Mr. Billings, the 

owner of Beacon Ridge, was about 

to close it down. He was losing a 

lot of money and could not fi nd a 

buyer. Property values would have 

taken a drastic drop. 

I’m quite confi dent that once everything 

is known about the negotiations 

that were done by the 

Board to help close the sale of 

Beacon Ridge, you will see that 

the right decisions were made, 

legally, as had been done by previous 

Boards when creating and 

modifying covenants for a new annexation. 

Negotiations between a Developer 

and SLWLA have always been 

done in this manner. The Membership 

has never been formally 

involved. During this negotiation, 

there were give’s and take’s between 

the parties. As a result, 

we have a new owner instead of 

an abandoned golf course. The

In closing, I am very proud of my

with the 30-plus hours 

a week I spent talking with Members, 

replying to emails, making 

and answering phone calls, attending 

numerous meetings, and 

working with a very dedicated CAS 

team. 

I NEVER had a personal agenda. 

Everything I did was for what I believed 

to be, best for the Community. 

I will miss many things about being 

on the Board, including the 

interactions with the three Committees 

under my Directorship 

(HR, Recruiting, and the previous

on several items that were doing

visit. Treatments are isolated to 

areas where the level of infestation 

warrants chemical application. 

FLPM understands the 

residents of Seven Lakes use the 

lakes for various activities from 

swimming and boating to fishing. 

FLPM tries to take this into consideration 

in an effort to maintain 

a balance between the uses 

of the lake. Due to the selective 

nature of our treatments there 

remains the potential for areas 

of the lakes to experience varying 

levels of vegetation growth due to 

different environmental factors 

beyond our control. Also, there is 

no pre-emergent application for 

aquatic weeds, this is why sterile 

grass carp stockings are utilized 

with chemical applications. 

The sterile grass carp provide a 

natural long-term biological control 

for aquatic vegetation.

Vandalism At The West Side Swimming Pool 

The furniture was all thrown into the pool, creating damage to the 

furniture as well as the pool. The divider rope is missing. 

A police report was filed. 

Prior to this, they were notified that it appeared someone had 

smashed the keypad in at boat storage. 

Community Advocate Update 

At the last Board meeting a member of the community filed a formal 

complaint with the Community Manager and Community Advocate in 

regards to the Clubhouse Commons Annexation Agreement. The complaint 

specifically deals with whether or not the Board followed the 

procedures detailed in our governing documents when passing the 

Terms of Agreement for Annexation. The complaint is currently under 

investigation for possible referral to the Judicial Panel. 

Please notify the SLLA office of any maintenance issues that you may 

see in the community. As the first line of defense, do 

not assume that someone else is aware of an issue.

The underground work has been completed and East Gate is reopened.

Lake Auman Water Quality Update 

Water testing done on July 17 show that the water chemistry is finally 

back to normal. Hurricane Matthew last fall produced high ammonia 

levels lasting all winter due to all the organics washed into the lake 

from the excessive rainfall. Clarity is now normal for August.

has served the greater Sandhills 

area through its USA Swimming

The game’s history can be traced 

back to 1530, to an Italian lottery 

called “Lo Giuoco del Lotto D’Italia,” 

which is still played every Saturday 

in Italy. 

In the U.S., bingo was originally 

called “beano”. It was a country 

fair game where a dealer would 

select numbered discs from a cigar 

box and players would mark 

their cards with beans. They yelled 

“beano” if they won. “Toy salesman 

Edwin S. Lowe renamed it 

“bingo” after he overheard someone 

accidentally yell “bingo” instead 

of “beano.” 

A few miles from Jacksonville, 

Lowe came around a bend in 

the road and was greeted by the 

bright lights of a country carnival. 

Ed Lowe tried to play Beano that 

night, but, he recalls, “I couldn’t 

get a seat. But while I was waiting 

around, I noticed that the players 

were practically addicted to 

the game. Ed Lowe tried to play

“I couldn’t get a seat.” The picthman 

wanted to close up, but every 

time he said, “This is the last 

game’, nobody moved. When he 

fi nally closed at 3:00 a.m. he had 

to chase them out.”

the services of an elderly professor 

of mathematics at Columbia 

University, one Carl Leffl er. Lowe’s 

request was the the professor devise 

6,000 new Bingo cards with 

non repeating number groups. 

Eventually, the task was completed. 

The E.S. Lowe Company had 

its 6,000 cards - at the expense of 

the professor’s sanity! 

By 1934 there were an estimated 

10,000 Bingo games a week, and 

Ed Lowe’s fi rm had a thousand 

employees frantically trying to 

keep up with demand - 64 presses 

printing 24 hours a day - “... 

we used more newsprint than the 

New York Times!” 

According to Lowe, the largest 

Bingo game in history was played 

in New York’s Teaneck Armory 

- 60,000 players, with another 

10,000 being turned away at the 

door. Ten automobiles were given 

away. Bingo was off to a fast start, 

and at the same time, had reserved 

itself next to baseball and 

apple pie - thanks to Ed Lowe and 

the loss of Professor Leffl er’s sanity. 

Today, more than $90 million 

dollars are spent on bingo each 

week in North America alone.

Several months after Bingo hit the 

market, Lowe was approached by 

a priest from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. 

The Father had a problem 

in his parish. A fast thinking 

parishoner had come up with the 

idea of using Bingo as a way to 

get the church out of its fi nancial 

troubles. However, problems developed 

immediately when it was 

found that each game produced 

half a dozen or more winners. To 

make the game workable on this 

large of a scale, a great many 

more combinations of numbers 

would have to be developed for 

Lowe was a Jewish immigrant from 

Poland. Not only did his E.S. Lowe 

company produce bingo cards, 

he also developed and marketed 

the game Yahtzee, for which he 

bought the rights from a couple 

who played it on their yacht. His 

company was sold to Milton Bradley 

in 1973 for $26 million. Lowe 

died in 1986.

Each Battleship puzzle represents an ocean with a hidden fleet of ships, 

which may be oriented horizontally or vertically within the grid such 

that no ship touches another, not even diagonally. 

The numbers on the right and on the bottom of the grid show how many 

squares in the corresponding row and column are occupied by ship 

segments. Occasionally some squares may contain given ship or water 

segments to help start the puzzle. The object is to discover where all 

ships are located. 

Classic Battleship puzzles come in various sizes, with different fleets 

for each size. For example, the fleet of a Classic Battleship 10x10 puzzle 

consists of one battleship, two cruisers, three destroyers and four 

submarines. 

Submarines consist of a single round segment, destroyers have two 

end segments, cruisers have two end segments and a middle segment, 

and the battleship is constructed of two end segments and two middle

There was a huge crowd that attended 

the 2ND Annual “Pours 

in The Pines”, Beer Festival on a 

wonderful Fall day in the Sandhills 

at The Weymouth Center for the 

Arts and Humanities. There were 

over 50 craft beers from over 25 

breweries to be enjoyed. 

Several food trucks were available 

The band McKenzies Mill provided 

the entertainment for everyone 

with a stage set up on the lush 

lawn outside the mansion for the 

2 - 6 pm event. 

The event was held to benefit 

Duskin & Stephens Foundation 

which helps families of “Fallen 

Special Forces Soldiers” and the 

Southern Pines Womens Rugby 

Team.

Lake Auman Storm Preparation 

Although we will thankfully not be 

in the direct line of Hurricane Irma, 

an extensive rain and wind event 

will most likely occur here. All boat 

owners should be sure their mooring 

lines are secure and strong. 

All items on your boat should be 

secured or stowed, and bimini 

covers should be closed and covered 

to prevent wind damage. For 

those at the marina, check any 

surrounding boats; their owners 

may be out of town. 

Lakefront dock owners should consider 

removing furniture, kayaks 

and other “”toys” from the dock 

areas. The lake often becomes a 

“yard sale” after storms, so expect 

this to be a probable event. (After 

the storm, we can provide a lost 

and found online to return relocated 

items.) Remove bird feeders, 

chimes and anything that can 

get caught up in the wind and do 

damage.

Houten and the Dam Committee 

will monitor the lake level to adjust 

the release valve if necessary. 

General hurricane preparation is 

available throughout the general 

news media, so none of that 

needs to be included here. 

Please be a good neighbor; Check 

with anyone on your street who 

may be alone or in need of assistance 

before, during and after the 

storm. 

JERRY & CAROLYN SINK 

Jerry and Carolyn retired to Seven 

Lakes West in 2014, after considering 

many areas for retirement. 

Jerry, a North Carolina native from 

High Point was familiar with the 

area. 

The Sink’s moved around the 

country and have acquired 10 

different addresses in 5 different 

states. 

Jerry was in the Air Force from 

1967 until 1971. He and Carolyn 

had extensive careers in Human 

Resources. They purchased their 

home in 2012, had it renovated, 

then moved from Oklahoma to 

Seven Lakes when they retired in 

2014. 

As very active members supporting 

the community through their 

volunteer efforts, Jerry is President 

elect of the Seven Lakes 

Kiwanis Club and will be formally 

inducted on September 26th. 

Jerry also volunteers with the organization 

“Vietnam Veterans Association”, 

joining the organization 

after playing a few rounds of 

golf with some Vietnam veterans. 

Jerry fi nds time to run the Kiwanis 

Bingo operation for the organization 

with average attendance of 

35-45 players. The Kiwanis raise 

funds to support the children of 

Moore County. According to Jerry, 

“it’s all about the children”. 

Carolyn’s volunteer efforts led her 

to become President of the Seven 

Lakes Garden Club and is spending 

time with the Seven Lakes Village 

Beautifi cation Committee as 

well as theWomen of Seven Lakes.

The Beautifi cation Committee 

maintains the railroad beds along 

211 and the Zen Garden at the 

end of Seven Lakes Drive. In 1990 

there were over 200 members of 

the Garden Club and they planted 

fl owerbeds and landscaped many 

public areas. 

The Garden Club has feild trips, 

speakers, and hosts the annual 

Garden Tour. Raffl e Baskets on 

the tour raise funds for the organization.

Celebrating Memories with Seven Lakes 

Assisted Living and Memory Care 

We are hosting a fall prom themed 

“Falling in Love” for the residents 

at Seven Lakes Assisted Living 

and Memory Care October 28th. 

With the seasons changing, we 

wanted to give the residents a fun 

evening to reflect and think on 

memories of the past. 

We are planning to have light 

refreshments, a DJ, evening wear, 

and hair and make-up done for the 

residents. Music is a pathway for 

those with memory loss to revisit 

special times in their lives. There 

have been numerous studies that 

show that music can touch aptitude, 

appreciation, emotional and 

physical areas of people who are 

live with Dementia related diseases. 

There will be a wide variety of 

music styles played to reach the 

different backgrounds we have 

here. Dancing and moving are 

great ways to keep the body active 

so this is just another aspect of 

the fall prom that is great therapy. 

We chose the theme “Falling 

in Love” not to focus on romantic 

relationships but instead to focus 

on remembering the fun times and 

the loving times our residents had 

in their youth. 

With a disco ball and red carpet 

we have high hopes that there will 

be plenty of smiles that evening. 

If you would like to help us make 

this night special for the residents 

please reach out to us. 

We welcome volunteers and 

donations always. “The more the 

merrier” we always say. The Seven 

Lakes staff truly works to create 

a family environment so even 

when you are not able to be here 

for your family, your family has 

someone with them they see as 

family. 

While we want to bring back 

memories for the patients here, we 

are also looking to make memories 

for the day so we can all look back 

and remember the day we were 

“falling in love.”

The season opens with Beethoven’s serene 

and evocative “Pastoral” Symphony and two 

masterpieces by Rachmaninoff—the symphonic 

poem The Rock is followed by the 

scintillating Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, 

performed by award-winning pianist 

Micah McLaurin.

Young Anglers 

Enjoy Kids Fishing 

Derby At 

Johnson Point 

Sixteen area youngsters, ages 4 to 12, participated in the 2017 Kids 

Fishing Derby on Saturday, September 3rd at Johnson Point. The 

event was sponsored by the Lake Auman Sports Club which provided 

trophies and prizes, most of the bait and served refreshments and 

snacks afterwards. Sports Club members Charlie Flinchum, Dave 

Lamon, Frank Land and Jim Pierman were the contest offi cials measuring 

and recording all the fi sh caught. They were also distributing 

worms for bait and helping take fi sh off the hook when needed. 

Participants were divided into two age groups, age eight to twelve 

years and age seven years and younger. Prizes were awarded in each 

age group for the most fi sh caught and for the largest fi sh caught. For 

the younger group with six fi shermen, Brennan Garske, age four, won 

for most fi sh caught for the second year in a row catching a total of ten 

fi sh and six year old Juaquin Mimms’ eight inch bream took top prize 

for the biggest fi sh. Ten anglers competed in the older group with Eric 

Lovett, age ten, leading the fi eld to take fi rst place catching an amazing 

total of twenty-two fi sh and the largest fi sh, a thirteen inch bass, 

was caught by Bryan Turner, age nine. 

The event demonstrated the mission statement of Lake Auman Sports 

Club to “Enhance the value of Lake Auman to the residents by providing 

programs that improve fi shing, promote more enjoyment from fi shing 

and by sponsoring other sports programs based on the surveyed 

interest of the community.” Event organizer Don Smith was pleased 

with the number and enthusiasm of the young anglers. The Sports Club 

was also appreciative of the participants, parents and grandparents 

for exhibiting true sportsmanship and good humor during the contest.
