With the news of the diagnosis, that first race became a much bigger deal to Joyce. “As I started to fundraise for the race, I found so many people, even at work, who are impacted [by the disease], who have parents or grandparents or aunts [who have been touched by it],” she said. Now, she has approximately 25 names of people for whom she runs who have donated to the cause. The company for which she works also matches her donations raised. “I’m thankful that they started this [event],” Joyce said. “I’m very thankful to be part of this team and part of the fundraising. To see how much we’ve been able to accomplish, even as a small group. It gives a nice sense of pride and ownership to be part of what they created.” Still running This year, there are 20 people who signed up to run, which has booked all 158 miles, Brian said. “The age range throughout the years has been from 7 years old up to someone 59 years old running this year,” he said. “We run the same route every year. We drive out two weeks before and test it to make sure nothing is under construction.” One thing Jeff said he is looking forward to this year is the group’s run through Prophetstown. “Last year ... the mayor was out there, and he came and greeted us,” Jeff said. “He said the next time we were out there to let him know. So, we’re actually going to run through one of the local bars there, because they said they love what we’re all about. It’s neat little things like that.” And while running for the cause is one way of being on the Run Across Illinois team, for people whose purview does not involve racing around the state donating is just fine, too. “We’re not raising the money to cure my mom,” Brian said. “We’re raising the money because we want to find a cure for this disease. Everybody knows somebody who has been affected by this. “Watching my father now be a caregiver — I don’t want my wife to have to do this for me, or my sister-inlaw to have to do this for Jeff,” Brian said. “Let’s get the research and the funding. I don’t want to see my kids have to go through what I had to go through with my mom and grandma. “It’s a slow, ugly ... death that is just sad. And there’s no cure. “We’re trying to do our part. I’m not a celebrity. I can’t be like J.J. One of the most iconic items on the menu is geared toward patrons who may still be feeling the effects of their previous night out — the hangover burger ($9). It is a more breakfast-oriented offering, complete with a fried egg, bacon, American cheese and shredded hash browns. “We want to get them down,” Patty said of the new burgers on the menu. “We tried to hit the different areas, depending on what you like.” For those with larger appetites, the Buffalo burger ($9) is the way to go, as it features a Buffalo breaded chicken breast on top of the half-pound burger patty, and is topped with blue cheese crumbles. The peanut butter pieces burger ($9) has surprised Patty with its popularity. The Reese’s-inspired creation is stuffed with peanut butter pieces and topped with creamy peanut butter and bacon. “We’re trying to tweak it,” Patty said of the menu. “We’re trying to really get what the people want.” While the burgers have been the main focus recently, patrons will have more options in the coming months. Patty makes homemade soups, which will be served in bread bowls and available as soup-of-the-day options. She also enjoys whipping up home-cooked meals, such as lasagna and meatloaf, and serving them during halftime of all Chicago Bears games. “It’s something we’ve done since Day 1,” Patty said. “We always have food for the Bears games.” Another constant at Outpost Bar and Grill since it opened in 2005 has been a focus on family. Patty owns the bar, along with her daughter Lisa Gerny. Lori Thompson, Morgan and Brandon’s mother and the general manager, works there as well.
