30 the advertizer Features to look for on the new polymer £10 note www.thenewten.co.uk Follow these simple steps to verify your new £10 note’s security features. Remember do not rely on just one feature, check a few. 1. Check the see-through window There is a large see-through window on the note. A clearly defined portrait of the Queen is printed on the window with the words ‘£10 Bank of England’ printed twice around the edge. 2. A finely detailed metallic image of Winchester Cathedral is positioned over the window. The foil is gold on the front of the note and silver on the back of the note. When the note is tilted a multicoloured rainbow effect can be seen. The foil £ symbol in the window is silver on the front of the note and copper on the back of the note. 3. At the side of the window is a coloured quill which changes from purple to orange when the note is tilted. This effect can be seen on the front and back of the note. 4. Check the foil patches On the front of the note, below the see-through window, is a silver foil patch. When the note is tilted the word ‘Ten’ changes to ‘Pounds’ and a multi-coloured rainbow effect can be seen. 5. On the front of the note, above the see-through window, is a silver foil patch containing an image of the coronation crown which appears 3D. When the note is tilted a multicoloured rainbow effect can be seen. 6. On the back of the note, there is a book-shaped copper foil patch which contains the letters JA. It is immediately behind the silver crown on the front. 7. Check the polymer and the raised print The note is printed on polymer which is a thin and flexible plastic material. By running your finger across the front of the note you can feel raised print in areas such as the words ‘Bank of England’ and in the bottom right corner, around the number 10. 8. Check the print quality The printed lines and colours on the note are sharp, clear and free from smudges or blurred edges. 9. Check the microlettering Using a magnifying glass, look closely at the lettering beneath the Queen’s portrait - you will see the value of the note written in small letters and numbers. 10. Check the ultra-violet feature If you look at the front of the note under a good quality ultra-violet light, the number 10 appears in bright red and green whilst the background remains dull in contrast. New partnership programme launches in Renfrewshire to keep young drivers safe on the road Young drivers at Renfrewshire Council are set to improve their skills behind the wheel as Police Scotland launched a new partnership programme in Renfrewshire. More than 40 driving instructors and learners attended a launch event at the Gleniffer Hotel which outlined the benefits of the programme through presentations by Police Scotland and the Motor Schools Association of Great Britain. The new driver scheme aims to provide young drivers with the skills and knowledge needed to lower the risk of a collision for inexperienced drivers. The scheme will link with the Council’s Modern Apprenticeship programme and young drivers will have the opportunity to attend workshops designed to improve their hazard perception. The course will use case studies to identify the missed hazards which ultimately caused a collision, recognise why they were missed and provide the solutions to ensure that drivers will not make the same mistakes. Councillor Marie McGurk, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Communities, Housing and Planning Policy Board, said: “This new programme will be a fantastic resource for our Modern Apprentices to take advantage of and will prepare them for life on the roads, both in their own vehicles and when using the council fleet. “It is important that young drivers are able to deal with the hazards which may present themselves on the roads and the course allows the risks to be addressed in the classroom before facing them in reality. “This training will ensure that all young drivers who have access to the council fleet will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to drive the vehicles safely and appropriately as they carry out their role within the organisation.” Since the scheme was launched in February 2017, more than 1000 drivers have taken part in workshops with Police Scotland to enhance their hazard perception skills when behind the wheel. Superintendent Nichola Burns, Renfrewshire and Inverclyde Division, said “Working in partnership with Renfrewshire Council is a fantastic way for us to reach out to new drivers through their modern apprentice programme. “It allows us to promote road safety by discussing opinions and driving styles, and highlighting the dangers of peer pressure and bravado whilst in control of a vehicle. “Working in partnership with Renfrewshire Council allows us to improve road safety by delivering the right messages to the right audience and at the most appropriate time. We hope our presentations will change attitudes and behaviours.” The Council will make the course available to all its modern apprentices, with an initial focus on those who will have access to the Council fleet. All employees currently have to undergo a pre-assessment check before being allowed access to a council vehicle and the training will expand on this to ensure all necessary precautions are in place. october 2017 Queensferry Crossing by Chloe McGinn 31 Thanks to everyone who took part in LEAP’s Cycle for Summer Local people, their families and a member of Ride 63 based at Clyde Muirshiel, got on their bikes to cycle a total of 3153 miles between July and August this year for LEAP’s Cycle for Summer challenge. 11 participants collectively clocked up these cycled miles, a distance equivalent to a cycle from the West to the East Coast of USA, as the crow flies. Organiser Lesley Ritchie from LEAP, said of this achievement, ‘It just goes to show that when people come together for a challenge, there’s no end to just what can be achieved, and as just under half of these cycled miles were to replace a car journey or to commute to work, people are fitting in cycling Michael Divers cycling on Dalry Moor in August 2017 to their daily lives. Well Done to everyone who took part in this year’s community cycling challenge!’ Michael Divers, from Ride 63, pictured here on the Dalry Moor, personally contributed to just under half of the cycled miles achieved including daily cycling journeys of 25 miles to and from work. Lochwinnoch Bike Swap was a Big Bike Revival success For LEAP’s latest Bike Swap at Castle Semple Loch on 2nd September, we combined the Bike Swap with a full programme of cycling activities funded by the Big Bike Revival, Cycling UK. Over 80 people attended the event and took part in the Bike Swap by swapping and/or donating bikes, getting tips on cycle safety and maintenance or a check of their bike, by taking part in one of our electric bike or manual guided cycle rides, or by getting a taster trial of electric and manual cycles at RT Cycles base in Lochwinnoch. Thanks to everyone who came along to enjoy cycling and for all the partners who lent their time to come out on what turned out to be a beautiful sunny afternoon.
