Cross is a proliic painter who embraces a post-internet practice and the multiplicity of experience
inherent within. He often reworks previous paintings, cutting out and collaging several bodies of
work together, synthesizing old and new to incorporate spills and drips with portraits, landscapes and
symbols. This non-hierarchical way of painting has freed him to make what he is most passionate
about in the moment. A similar questioning of the status quo can be found in the oeuvres of Martin
Kippenberger and Neo Rauch. Cross also enjoys making works on paper and large scale installations.
Tabloids, google image search, art history studies and his own travel journals are rich with narrative
and imagery that ultimately serve as a source for his artwork.
Andy Cross earned an MFA in painting from Hunter in 2006 and a BFA in printmaking from
Virginia Commonwealth University in 2001. Cross had a solo exhibition titled Cosmic Spandex at
Sardine (Brooklyn) in 2016. His work has been exhibited widely nationally and internationally including
solo exhibtions at Martos Gallery and Kravets/Wehby (both NYC), Sardine (2014/2016)
and Cathouse FUNeral (Brooklyn), Mario Diacono (Boston) and the Collezione Maramotti (Reggio
Emilia, Italy). Cross has been included in group exhibitions including Galerie Mikael Andersen
(Berlin), M2A (Dresden) Peter Blum, ATM Gallery and Gary Tatinsian (all NYC). His work has been
reviewed in Art in America, ArtNews, The Boston Globe, Vogue Italia, and various online sources.
