Wright’s buttery, carefully wrought paintings are built through the application of seemingly endless
layers of paint, in an additive process that leans towards the architectural. Demarcating and
deining planes of space, toying with light and shadow, Wright’s work is as enchanting and airy as
it is somber and relective, ofering the viewer a zen-like space for meditation. Mitchell’s monochromatic
paintings are generous and utterly sincere. In cadence with the likes of Mark Rothko
and James Turrell, Wright is in search of the sublime and transports his viewers via the pure and
inexplicable sensation of color and light.
Mitchell Wright earned his MFA from the University of Tennesse and BFA from Mississippi State
University. Wright has had a solo exhibition titled hard feelings at Sardine (Brooklyn), in addtion
to prior solo shows at White Columns (NYC), Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum (CA),
and the University of Mississippi Museum (Oxford, MS). His work has been exhibited in group
shows at Brennan & Griin, Heskin Contemporary, Cinders Gallery, Daily Operation, Kinz, Tillou
+ Feigen, and NADA Art Fair (all NYC), VCU Fine Arts Gallery (Richmond, VA), and internationally
at Gallery Min Min (Tokyo). Mitchell is a co-founder of 106 Green, a Brooklyn based
gallery that invites artists and curators to exhibit work.
