Gold for Cambridgeshire Dance School 

The Jill Bridger School of Dance has won Gold in the Dance School 

of the Year Award ‘large school’ category. From thousands of 

dance schools eligible to enter across the UK and Europe, principal, 

Jill Bridger, was delighted to be shortlisted as a Finalist before 

attending the awards ceremony in Exeter on 28 July 2017. “We 

were thrilled to win the Gold Award at the end of an outstanding 

evening attended by many fellow dance professionals,” says 

Jill Bridger. 

The Dance School of the Year Awards were founded by 

Anne Walker MBE to celebrate the achievements of theatre dance 

schools. Anne is a former dance teacher, entrepreneur and 

business mentor. She has run many successful businesses including 

the dancewear company International Dance Supplies. The judges 

Francesca Filpi, Royal Ballet dancer, Paul Haigney, entrepreneur 

and Angela Rippon CBE, broadcaster and life-long dance supporter 

all attended the event. 

The Jill Bridger School of Dance was established in 1988 and has 

over 700 students aged 18 months to 18 years with branches in 

Cambridge, Cambourne, Hardwick and St Ives. Classes offered 

include pre-school Melody Bear classes, RAD ballet and ISTD 

modern and tap. 

The school ethos is that every child feels welcomed and inspired 

with a joy of dance. Jill has been determined from the school’s 

earliest days to offer an environment where students can achieve as 

much as their natural ability makes possible whilst acquiring many 

happy memories in the process. “It is important to me that I get to 

know my students as individuals and provide them with a platform 

for growth, assisting their development into confident young adults. 

I am now personally teaching the children of past pupils and 

reminiscing about old school events is an ever-popular pastime.”

Stagecoach Cambridge

Beauty and the Beast

After an amazing summer and achieving a rating of 

OUTSTANDING from OFSTED, Barracudas are excited to 

announce that they will be running an October Half Term camp at 

Hinchingbrooke School in Huntingdon. Children aged 4.5 to 14

As parents, we strive to pick good schools and to get to know our 

child’s teacher. When it comes to clubs outside school, we don’t 

necessarily know how to go about this. For dance classes, all good 

dance teachers should be qualified and happy to prove it! Ask the 

teacher about their qualifications, research teachers online or 

contact the Council for Dance, Education and Training for a list of 

Recognised Teachers. Always ask to try or watch a class before you 

decide if it’s right for your child.

Meet the animals 

With three daily flying displays you can experience the birds flying close to you, including eagles, hawks, various different sizes of owls and of 

course the Ferrari of the team the Falcons. Our keeper talks with the birds, reptiles and meerkats we help you understand the vital work that the 

staff and volunteers carry out. 

This year we had two new additions that will be joining our team a large eagle owl called Bell and Alice our barn owl. Both were born at the 

centre on the same day. Bell and Alice will also be helping out on birthday parties, experience days and meet the bird keeper talks. 

Our tearoom is now under new 

management, JS Caterers have 

taken the role on. With new 

menus, new layout, offering 

afternoons teas, evening 

bookings and much more.

LINTON ZOO 

Now is the perfect time for a visit! The zoo is 

buzzing with activity and there is so much to 

see and do with some fantastic new exhibits! 

Two relatively small, but none the less 

remarkable species, are causing quite a stir 

in the zoo world, our Eastern quoll and 

Azara’s agouti. 

Few people have even heard of a quoll, let 

along seen one! Eastern Quoll, a 

carnivorous marsupial, are considered extinct 

in mainland Australia and are now only 

found in Tasmania. Our three are part of a 

European breeding programme and Linton is 

one of only two places in the UK where they 

can be seen. 

Our trio of Azara’s agouti have been 

enjoying their new accommodation, making 

adjustments as they see fit! Agouti are found 

in forested and wooded areas in Central and 

South America. They can live for as long as 

20 years, a remarkably long time for a 

rodent. They are one of the few species 

(along with macaws) that can open the Brazil 

nut pod without tools. 

Primarily a breeding centre for endangered 

species, Linton Zoo is home to some very 

exciting animals which include magnificent 

tigers, lions, snow leopard, tapirs, kangaroo, 

binturong, Mountain zebra, lemurs, giant 

tortoises, lots of birds and some unusual 

reptiles. 

There is a very exciting schedule of events 

over the school holidays and at weekends 

which our team have developed to get you 

much closer to some of our animals, whilst 

giving you more information about our 

conservation projects. For example meet our 

Brazilian tapirs Thiago, Tiana and their new 

addition “Rio”, when the family are given 

their lunch at 12 o’clock. And there is an 

opportunity to get very close to the red 

kangaroo and wallaby mob when the 

keepers give them their afternoon snack. 

Don’t miss the animal encounters where you 

will have a chance to touch some of our 

smaller zoo animals, every day there will be 

something different and may include snakes, 

lizards, owls, baby giant tortoises, guinea 

pigs, giant stick insects and other creepy 

crawlies! 

Our zoo is in a beautiful woodland setting, it 

is the perfect place to get the family, 

especially children, connected to nature! To 

get the best from your visit make sure you 

allow time to go around a couple of times 

and so that you don’t miss anything plan 

your outing before you come by checking our 

website for all the scheduled talks and 

activities.

than just a zoo visit then our VIP Behind the

Aladdin at The Broadway 

ALADDIN will be flying into The Broadway (Peterborough) this 

Christmas. 

The Broadway in Peterborough, which has recently reopened its 

doors to great success, has announced it will be presenting 

‘ALADDIN’, a spectacular professional pantomime this Christmas. 

The production will be produced by KD Theatre Productions Ltd, a 

local experienced pantomime production company who have 

pantomimes all over the UK, as well as touring shows throughout 

the year. 

Daniel Bell and Katherine Hickmott, producers for KD Theatre 

Productions said “we are delighted to be working with the team at 

The Broadway to produce this fantastic pantomime for all the 

family. Audiences can expect high production values, a cast of 

seasoned professionals, a live band and a show packed with laughs 

for all the family!”

delighted to be working with KD Productions to bring pantomime 

back to The Broadway. Aladdin is an enchanting story filled with 

magic making it the ideal production for our first Christmas show.

It is a shocking statistic but thanks to the NSPCC’s Speak Out Stay 

Safe service, children are being empowered to speak out and seek 

help. 

It delivers essential safeguarding information to children aged four 

to 11 in a lively, memorable way. 

Child-friendly, interactive assemblies and workshops teach children 

about abuse in all its forms and how to spot the signs. 

The service also helps children understand who they can turn to for 

help, including the NSPCC’s Childline service. 

It is delivered by specially trained volunteers who know how 

important it is for children to have this knowledge. 

The service spoke to 1,711,275 children in 7,756 schools across 

the UK throughout 2016/17. Now the NSPCC needs your help to 

reach even more children.

Finding a sport that the whole family can participate in together can 

be challenging. The answer could be taking up karate. Those who 

started with us over the summer as white belts are making great 

progress and are now proud orange belts. Now a new intake of 

students are trying out karate but we still have spaces this autumn

‘The Stage’ is a respected national newspaper for the performing

Anti-Bullying Week shines a 

spotlight on bullying and

parents to talk about and take 

action against bullying. 

Anti-Bullying Week is 

coordinated by the Anti- 

Bullying Alliance and it takes 

place from 13th - 17th 

November 2017 and, this year, 

is supported by SafeToNet 

(www.safetonet.com) 

'All Different, All Equal' 

The organisers of Anti-Bullying Week 

want to empower children and young 

people to celebrate what makes them, 

and others, unique, and to understand 

how important it is that every child feels 

able to be themselves, without fear of 

bullying. 

The theme is based on the views of 

almost 600 children and young people 

who completed an Anti-Bullying Alliance 

survey, as well as consultation with ABA’s 

many members. Young people said that 

they wanted to talk about tackling 

bullying that comes about because 

someone else sees them as different. 

Why is Anti-Bullying Week 

important for primary school 

aged children? 

Primary school is a great time to teach 

children to empathise and celebrate what 

makes them and others different. This is 

especially important when preparing 

children for secondary school. Every child 

should understand that bullying is never 

acceptable and that they must speak to 

an adult they trust.

Tips for parents on responding 

to bullying… 

If your child is 

being bullied, 

don't panic! Your 

key role is 

listening, 

calming and 

providing 

reassurance that 

the situation can 

get better when 

action is taken. 

• Listen and reassure 

them that coming to 

you was the right thing 

to do. 

• Try and establish the 

facts. It can be helpful 

to keep a diary of 

events to share with 

the school. 

• Don't encourage 

retaliation to bullying - 

such as violent 

actions. It's important 

for children to avoid 

hitting or punching an 

abusive peer. Reacting that way has 

negative and unpredictable results. 

Rather, suggest that they walk away and 

seek help. 

• Find out what your child wants to 

happen next. Help to identify the choices 

open to them; the potential next steps to 

take; and the skills they may have to help 

solve the problems. 

• Encourage your child to get involved in 

activities that build their confidence and 

self-esteem, and help them to form 

friendships outside of school, or wherever 

the bullying is taking place. 

• Discuss the situation with your child's 

teacher or Head teacher - or the lead 

adult wherever the bullying is taking 

place. Every child has a right to a safe 

environment in which to learn and play. 

• Schools must have a behaviour policy 

which sets out the measures that will be 

taken to prevent all forms of bullying 

between pupils. Ask to see it!
