KUMON
Our aim at Kumon is to help children of any age and any ability discover
their full potential. Established for 60 years, the Kumon Maths and English
Programmes enable students to develop the confidence and skills to tackle
challenging work independently.
The Kumon Maths and English Programmes help to build a solid foundation
whilst developing ability in small, manageable steps. Through the use of
example questions, students are encouraged to problem solve and work out
answers independently.
Our programmes place great importance on self-learning, encouraging
students to discover how to solve problems for themselves. As our students
begin to take ownership of their learning and become independent learners,
they develop invaluable confidence and self-motivation. With guidance and
support from the Instructor, Kumon students build fluency, ability and
confidence, as well as a love of learning. Kumon Instructors continuously
monitor, guide and challenge students to grow by gradually increasing the
level of difficulty of the worksheets they assign, while taking into account
increases in each student’s level of academic ability.
Campaign calls for Play Not Tests at 4
It’s not too long now before a new group of four-year-old’s start ‘big
school’. Some are already bursting with excitement about this new adventure
while others — children and parents alike — might be nervous about such a
big change.
The first few weeks in Reception class focus on settling-in, learning new
routines and, of course, having fun. But now, the government is rolling out
plans to also test children in English and maths during those first few weeks
of term, and one campaign group is urging parents to make a stand against
the proposals.
More Than A Score argues that it’s not fair to take children away from their
friends to sit a test which won’t provide any reliable and useful information
about what they can or can’t do. The data collected in class will be used to
calculate progress in the coming years. The campaign group has conducted
research with heads and other primary school leaders which shows that 96%
believe the first few weeks of term should not be spent preparing children in
Reception class for tests.
Jill Bridger School of Dance
The Jill Bridger School of Dance’s caring and nurturing ethos is not only
reflected in its well-known pre-school Melody Bear classes but in its Senior
Department too. Our older students enter Royal Academy of Dance ballet
exams and have the opportunity to participate in our Student Assistant
training programme. The programme is an innovative training scheme
designed to guide, support and recognise teenagers helping in toddler and
preschool dance classes. In addition to teaching the principles of class
assisting it develops students’ general skills such as leadership, organisation,
planning and communication. This is the first step in the Melody Movement
Early Learning teacher training certificate, a programme accredited by the
Council for Dance, Drama and Musical Theatre (CDMT). It is a tool that
our students can use to enhance their further education and career paths.
We have three student performance shows annually. In a climate where our
young people have many pressures and stresses, we are delighted that our
teenagers are finding time to enjoy ballet – and to share their love of dance
with our younger children too.
Department of Education
When I became Education Secretary, I spent my first weekend in post asking
everyone I met what they wanted for their children. Invariably the answer that
came back was “I want my child to be happy”. That’s hardly surprising and
it’s why I’ve spent a lot of my time as Education Secretary thinking about
children’s health and wellbeing.
This was behind my decision to make health education – including mental
health – universal from 2020. If we get this right, then we are building
strong foundations on which every child will have the opportunity to fulfil
their potential.
When I hear about issues causing children undue stress or anxiety, it
concerns me.
It’s been clear for some time now that there are some misapprehensions
about the purpose of the SATs – or National Curriculum tests to give them
their proper name – that children take at the end of primary school. In some
cases, children aged as young as 10 or 11 are experiencing ‘exam stress’.
I know for some schools and parents the return to the classroom after halfterm
will bring an increased focus on the tests in May, so it’s important to set
things straight about what SATs are for and what effects they have.
I’ve heard disturbing stories of children not being allowed out to play by
their parents because they are too busy revising; I’ve heard of special exam
prep homework, ‘how-to’ guides, cramming and tutoring, even some
children spending their Christmas holidays looking at old tests. Last year a
poll found that up to 30% of schools are asking pupils to revise for SATs at
home and one in five are sending them home with previous papers.
I’ve also heard about schools feeling the need to put on stress-busting
sessions and running special activities to distract pupils from the pressure.
None of this is necessary, and it doesn’t happen everywhere. If one in five
are sending kids home with previous papers, it is important to note that four
in five aren’t.
Earlier this year I visited an outstanding primary school. When I spoke to the
headteacher about how they prepare children for SATs, she had a message I
found inspiring in its simplicity. She said they just tell pupils to do their best,
“but then that’s what we always tell them,” she added. I know this is
replicated in many thousands of schools all over the country – and I want it
to be the norm.
It is good for children to want to do their best, to show what they can do,
and to think that this does matter. But it is not at all the same thing as feeling
undue pressure.
Of course, these tests give parents an idea of how well their children are
doing in English and maths and, in some cases what additional support they
may need at secondary school. But they should never be a cause for upset
or anxiety for children or parents.
SATs are not public exams – they are tests, and there is a difference. These
are not A Levels or GCSEs with results that count on an individual basis in
the long term. Their core purpose is to help ensure primary schools are
teaching our children the key skills and knowledge in maths and English that
they will need to go on to succeed at secondary school.
Cambridge Gymnastics Academy
Cambridge Gymnastics Academy C.I.C is a not for profit organization based
in Arbury, formed in May 2012. We had a vision, to provide affordable
gymnastics lessons for all people to attend, no matter age, gender, income
or disability. The club has since evolved, with an incredibly dedicated staff
team and in May 2016, CGA opened its doors to an incredible new facility,
with a foam pit and sunken trampoline. Recognition of our success and work
within the community was acknowledged in 2017 when we won ‘Community
Club of the Year’ from Living Sport and in 2018 won the ‘Impact to Sports’
Award.
Classes are available from 6 week old babies to over 50’s. There is an elite
pathway for the more advanced gymnast. Holiday camps & parties are
available to 4.5 – 15 year old’s. Coaches are qualified up to National level
with British Gymnastics and have attended safeguarding and first aid
courses.
For further information head to www.cambridgegymnastics.co.uk or call
07971864653.
For gymnastics venues in the wider community head to
www.cgagymnasticssatellites.co.uk
And I don’t want SATs to be a source of stress for teachers either –
accountability and the measurement of schools are clearly vital so that we
can continue to drive up standards across our schools, but in recent years
Key Stage 2 tests have seen to be high stakes. That is why we are reforming
and simplifying the accountability system, to make sure that results and data
are only ever the starting point for a conversation about school
performance. We want parents to be able to see how their school is
performing and be confident in this without their children feeling under
pressure.
Exams and tests have their place in education and they always will. GCSEs
and A Levels are an important measure of what pupils have learned in their
schooling to that point and it’s right that they are treated seriously – these
are the measures that employers, universities and others will take into
account.
But you won’t be asked how you did in your SATs during a job interview. The
truth is that pupils only need to treat SATs in the same way that they treat
other work like a spelling or times table test – they just need to do their best.
The last thing I want is for 10 and 11-year-olds to be fearful or nervous
about taking a test. I want them to do their best in SATs, just as I want them
Tiny Tots Dance
Tiny Tots Dance run 'Parent and Me' dance classes for toddlers from 18
months to 5 years across Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire. We launched in
September 2015 and are an independent parent & toddler dance class
programme, with original work written and choreographed by good friends
and now fellow Principals Amy and Kelly.
With the use of colourful props, instruments, ribbons, bean bags and pom
pom's coupled with our choice of fun, upbeat music and a new theme each
week, our classes will help to inspire your child's imagination through dance,
song and play. Our teachers are enthusiastic, experienced and above all,
love teaching dance to children.
"When young children use their imaginations in play, they are more creative,
perform better at school tasks and develop a problem-solving approach to
learning" Isenberg & Jalongo (2001)
Dance class at such a young age contributes to their growth in every way.
This is most likely their first class experience, so we aim to make it great fun
for all!
Our classes follow a structured programme yet are taught in a relaxed
atmosphere, where children can learn at their own pace as their confidence
grows.
Classes can either be paid by half term (at £4 a class) or you are welcome
to PAYG at just £5 a class. Siblings are charged at £2 per session. Non
walkers are FREE.
To find out more about us and what we do, or to find a class near you,
please visit our website www.tinytotsdance.co.uk.
Booking is essential as our classes are very popular and can get busy at
times.
We look forward to dancing with you and your tiny tot in one of our classes
very soon!
Wow!
The Cresset headed over to Heart in February to present a huge
donation to their charity, Global’s Make Some Noise. The incredible
total of £4307.46 (almost £1000 more than last year’s total) has
been raised thanks to the generosity of The Cresset’s 2018 panto
audiences during the run of Robin Hood last December.
The money raised will go towards Global’s Make Some Noise, a
national charity which gives a voice to those smaller charities who
sometimes don’t get heard. Within Cambridgeshire, Make Some
Noise is supporting Tom’s Trust, which provides pioneering clinical
psychology for children diagnosed with a brain tumour. Their team
currently provides support for more than 700 children and their
families.
This donation will make a huge difference to the work of charities like
Tom’s Trust and will help to transform the lives of disadvantaged
children and young people across the UK. A big thank you to
theatregoers for digging deep and supporting this worthy cause!
CAMBRIDGESHIRE SCHOOL CHILDREN
GET MESSY
Hundreds of primary school children across Cambridgeshire were given the
opportunity to get ‘hands-on’ during interactive scientific workshops carried
out by Public Health England (PHE) scientists as part of British Science Week.
Five Cambridgeshire primary schools, including Fulbourn Primary, took part
in the informative, fun and messy sessions designed to engage and inspire
the scientists of tomorrow. Pupils had the chance to discover what life is like
for a PHE microbiologist. They donned lab coats and googles to investigate
‘What Makes Your Tummy Ache’ and why infection control is paramount in
a laboratory.
The eager students examined pretend ‘poo pots’, used petri dishes to
separate ‘tummy’ germs represented by beads and had a go at dispensing
pretend ‘blood’ samples into trays ready to be tested. Chocolate sauce,
chocolate covered raisins and berry juice was used as a substitute for the
real thing.
Laura Ryall, National Infection Service, PHE East said:
“Inspiring young people to consider a career in science is really important to
us at Public Health England. We had a brilliant time with the children who
embraced the activities with enthusiasm and curiosity – as expected the
pretend poo pots were the most popular part of the day! At this age, the
children may not be thinking too seriously about their careers but we hope
our visit will have made an impression on them to get involved in science at
school as a first step.”
Peter Edwards, Science Lead at Fulbourn Primary School, Cambridge said:
"In schools, we believe passionately in building all children's knowledge and
understanding of the natural world, as well as their scientific skills, so that
they can ask and answer their own scientific questions. Providing the children
with a high-quality science education is always greatly enhanced when we
benefit from additional visits from local scientists - our fantastic visitors from
PHE gave the children an enjoyable, memorable and fascinating afternoon
of rich experiences.
“Contact with STEM employers is proven to be of great value to young
people, even from an early age, and we are hugely grateful to the team at
PHE who gave up their time to prepare and run these activities with our
classes."
Duncan Selbie, Chief Executive of PHE said:
“In order to tackle the big questions in public health we need passionate
scientists from a diverse range of backgrounds. It’s hugely important that as
well as investing in our current generation of scientists, that we spark
curiosity in the next generation and showcase the range of routes and
opportunities they can pursue within world-leading UK science. We are
thankful for the scientists taking part in British Science Week workshops
across the country, and hope that their efforts encourage the pupils to
consider a career in science as a viable and exciting option.”
