LINTON ZOO Now is the perfect time for a visit! The zoo is buzzing with activity and there is so much to see and do with some fantastic new exhibits and the Spring time babies just around the corner!! Our zoo is in a beautiful woodland setting, it is the perfect place to get the family, especially children, connected to nature! As an outdoor attraction remember to check the weather forecast and come prepared – wrap up warm and bring boots and waterproof gear. Primarily a breeding centre for endangered species and a place to learn, Linton Zoo is home to some very exciting animals which include magnificent tigers, lions, snow leopard, tapirs, kangaroo, Eastern quoll, mountain zebra, lemurs, giant tortoises, lots of birds and some unusual reptiles. Our exciting schedule of events can guide you round nearly the whole zoo meeting lots of our lesser known exotic species here at the zoo. Our team have developed a range of new talks and activities to get you much closer to some of our animals, whilst giving you more information about our conservation projects. Meet our Brazilian tapir family, when they are given their lunch at 12 o’clock. And there is an opportunity to get very close to the red kangaroo and wallaby mob when the keepers give them their afternoon snack. Don’t miss the animal encounters where you will have a chance to touch some of our smaller zoo animals, every day there will be something different and may include snakes, lizards, owls, baby giant tortoises, guinea pigs, giant stick insects and other creepy crawlies! To get the best from your visit make sure you allow time to go around a couple of times and so that you don’t miss anything plan your outing before you come by checking our website for all the scheduled talks and activities. If you want a little more than just a zoo visit why not book one of our VIP lemur tours for ages 2 and above, a great idea for Birthday parties! You can get up close and personal with a lemur and help the keepers feed them for just an extra £10 per person (best to book in advance to guarantee your place, children must be participated by an accompanying adult). Or as an extra treat and if you want a little more than just a zoo visit then our VIP Behind the Scenes Tortoise Tours are a must! Get up close and personal with our awesome giants and then go behind the scenes, learn how we care for our tortoise groups, including how we incubate the eggs, then meet some of the latest hatchlings! The Zoo is open daily from 1st April (weekends only until then), with an admission fee of £10.00 for an adult and £7.50 for children 2 to 13 years, we’re sure you will find your family outing fantastic value for money. CAMBRIDGESHIRE SCHOOL CHILDREN GET MESSY Hundreds of primary school children across Cambridgeshire were given the opportunity to get ‘hands-on’ during interactive scientific workshops carried out by Public Health England (PHE) scientists as part of British Science Week. Five Cambridgeshire primary schools, including Fulbourn Primary, took part in the informative, fun and messy sessions designed to engage and inspire the scientists of tomorrow. Pupils had the chance to discover what life is like for a PHE microbiologist. They donned lab coats and googles to investigate ‘What Makes Your Tummy Ache’ and why infection control is paramount in a laboratory. The eager students examined pretend ‘poo pots’, used petri dishes to separate ‘tummy’ germs represented by beads and had a go at dispensing pretend ‘blood’ samples into trays ready to be tested. Chocolate sauce, chocolate covered raisins and berry juice was used as a substitute for the real thing. Laura Ryall, National Infection Service, PHE East said: “Inspiring young people to consider a career in science is really important to us at Public Health England. We had a brilliant time with the children who embraced the activities with enthusiasm and curiosity – as expected the pretend poo pots were the most popular part of the day! At this age, the children may not be thinking too seriously about their careers but we hope our visit will have made an impression on them to get involved in science at school as a first step.” Peter Edwards, Science Lead at Fulbourn Primary School, Cambridge said: "In schools, we believe passionately in building all children's knowledge and understanding of the natural world, as well as their scientific skills, so that they can ask and answer their own scientific questions. Providing the children with a high-quality science education is always greatly enhanced when we benefit from additional visits from local scientists - our fantastic visitors from PHE gave the children an enjoyable, memorable and fascinating afternoon of rich experiences. “Contact with STEM employers is proven to be of great value to young people, even from an early age, and we are hugely grateful to the team at PHE who gave up their time to prepare and run these activities with our classes."
