puzzles containing a little over 4 

miles of winding pathways in a 

10-acre fi eld of corn, one of the 

largest in the area. 

The Free AutumnFest event

thirty years in bringing hilarious 

laughter to the heart of 

each child he meets. 

The South Ridge Bluegrass 

Band is a hard driving band 

and is a crowd favorite 

everywhere they play.

Within each puzzle, there are 

checkpoints with a different 

shaped punch at each station. 

Guests track their progress 

through the maze by punching a 

card given to them at the entrance 

to the maze. Staff and 

maps are stationed throughout 

the maze to assist guests.

Penick’s Vandergriff Presented Award 

COO Caroline Hendricks

Teresa Vandergriff, Penick 

Village’s Dining Room Manager, 

was awarded for her 

participation in Growing 

Moore Reader’s Reading 

Feeding Frenzy program that 

took place during the summer. 

Vandergriff was responsible 

for preparing bagged 

lunches that were given to 

the children attending the 

program, parents & families, 

and community residents 

in need. Over the course of 

the 10 week program, Vandergriff 

prepared 870 total 

lunches. 

The certifi cate “was an honor 

and a surprise,” says Teresa. 

“It was a real pleasure to be 

of service to the kids and 

their families. 

Growing Moore Readers, a 

program led by the non-profit 

organization Partners for 

Children and Families, began 

in 2012 as a smaller collaborative 

group called Southern 

Pines Grows Great Readers. 

This town-focused collaborative

Pacesetter Award in 2015.

Great music begins with 

great songs, and great songs 

are what the Honey Island 

Swamp Band is all about. 

The band came together 

when Aaron Wilkinson 

(acoustic guitar, mandolin, 

vocals) and Chris Mulé 

(electric guitar, vocals) were 

marooned in San Francisco 

after the levee breaches 

following Hurricane Katrina 

devastated New Orleans. After 

a chance encounter with 

fellow New Orleans evacuees 

Sam Price (bass, vocals) and 

Garland Paul (drums, vocals), 

and with no prospects 

of getting home any time 

soon, they fi gured they’d 

better cook up something 

new, and quick! A few days 

later they had put together 

a song list, landed a weekly 

gig at San Francisco’s Boom 

Boom Room, and settled 

in to share a little taste of 

Southern culture with their 

new West coast neighbors. 

Honey Island Swamp Band’s 

music has been described 

as “Bayou Americana”, with 

timeless songs from Wilkinson 

& Mulé, highlighted by 

Mulé’s searing guitar, Wilkinson’s 

sure-handed mandolin, 

and 4-part vocal harmonies, 

all anchored by the powerful 

groove of Price & Paul’s Louisiana 

stomp rhythm section.

Halloween is the only holiday 

of the entire year that truly 

inspires the imagination of 

adults and kids alike by encouraging 

the weirdest and 

most eccentric Halloween 

costumes for the numerous 

Halloween parties. The more 

outrageous a Halloween 

themed party is, the better. 

Halloween is the one holiday 

that is devoted to spooky 

fun! 

It used to be that Halloween 

was reserved for the kids, 

and their Halloween themed 

parties at school indulges 

and trick or treating at night. 

However, a lot more adults 

are now calling Halloween 

their favorite holiday too. 

on October 31st started as 

an ancient Celtic celebration, 

known as “Samhain”, which 

signifi ed the end of summer. 

The celts believed that goblin, 

witches, and other dark 

spirits came out on Samhain, 

and would accompany 

the souls of the dead, in the 

form of ghosts, to visit the 

places where they had lived. 

To ward off the dark spirits 

and witches, the Celts 

lit fi res. They left food and 

lanterns to welcome the 

souls of the dead and wore 

masks and costumes in celebration.

celebrated in a large number 

of countries with Halloween 

themed parties.

out at the golf course. The 

newest course “The Cradle” 

will be played on 789 yards. 

On September 30, nearly 

120 years after golf arrived 

at Pinehurst, the historic 

resort will open The Cradle, 

a nine-hole short course that 

even the newest to the game 

can enjoy. 

The Cradle, at 789 yards, 

features holes ranging from 

56 to 127 yards. Mere steps 

from the Resort Clubhouse, 

it is the same area where, 

in 1898, Dr. Leroy Culver 

carved the fi rst nine holes 

out of the sand at Pinehurst. 

Over the next century, Pinehurst 

came to be referred to 

as the Cradle of American 

Golf. 

Designed by Hanse Golf 

Course Design company, 

which was formed in 1993 

by founder Gil Hanse, and 

joined in 1995 by partner 

Jim Wagner, Hanse Golf 

Course Design has patiently 

nurtured its reputation and 

its craft to arrive at a position

Bordering The Cradle will

hills and sweeping valleys 

sure to delight golfers of all 

kinds. Thistle Dhu, which will 

open in early October, will be

Each Battleship puzzle represents an ocean with a hidden fleet of ships, 

which may be oriented horizontally or vertically within the grid such 

that no ship touches another, not even diagonally. 

The numbers on the right and on the bottom of the grid show how many 

squares in the corresponding row and column are occupied by ship 

segments. Occasionally some squares may contain given ship or water 

segments to help start the puzzle. The object is to discover where all 

ships are located. 

Classic Battleship puzzles come in various sizes, with different fleets 

for each size. For example, the fleet of a Classic Battleship 10x10 puzzle 

consists of one battleship, two cruisers, three destroyers and four 

submarines. 

Submarines consist of a single round segment, destroyers have two 

end segments, cruisers have two end segments and a middle segment, 

and the battleship is constructed of two end segments and two middle 

segments. 

Any remaining squares in the grid contain water segments, which are 

shown as a symbol of water or as an “X”.

STARworks Glass Studio 

opened on October 30, 

2008 at the Central Park NC 

annual meeting. The Glass 

Studio was started based 

on a partnership between 

STARworks, Center for Creative 

Enterprise and Wet Dog 

Glass. Central Park NC Executive 

Director, Nancy Gottovi, 

and Wet Dog founders, Eddie 

and Angela Bernard wanted 

to bring a fully operational 

glass studio to the area, 

which would in turn help 

build a budding glass community. 

STARworks Glass Studio is a 

non-profi t, fully operational 

glass studio that opened in 

October 2008. It is owned 

and operated by Central Park 

NC, a 501(c)(3) not for profi t 

organization and is part of 

its STARworks Center for Creative 

Enterprise. STARworks 

Glass Studio was funded 

with the generous help of 

a Community Development 

Block Grant through the NC 

Department of Commerce. 

The glassblowing equipment 

was designed and 

built by Wet Dog Glass LLC. 

STARworks Glass Studio is 

a non-profi t glassblowing 

studio that gives the public 

access to a wonderful art. 

STARworks Glass Studio has 

state-of-the-art glass equipment 

built by Wet Dog Glass, 

one of the top glass equipment 

fabricators in the country. 

The shop is equipped 

with a 250 lb. furnace, 740 

lb. furnace, 18”, 15”, 12” & 

9” glory holes, fi ve front loading 

annealing ovens and two 

casting ovens. 

Residents/interns also have 

access to basic woodworking 

and metalworking equipment. 

As a non-profi t, we 

rely on the generosity of our 

community. 

Work side by side with STARworks 

glassblowers to create your own 

beautiful glass pumpkin. Get a 

feel for how hot glass moves and 

can be manipulated. Choose the 

colors you like best to customize 

the pumpkin and the stem, and 

make your own unique creation. 

Finished pumpkins will need to 

cool over night in a glass oven 

and can be picked up the following 

week during regular business 

hours: 

Monday - Saturday, 9am - 5pm. 

Shipping is available for an additional 

charge. Participants must 

wear closed toe shoes and natural 

fi bers.
