The 4th Annual KinoFilm Fest launches in a new season and in a new venue!<br />

nce again this year KinoFilm Fest will be enticing Winnipeg movie lovers with<br />

award-winning feature films, documentaries, and kids’ movies from Ukraine,<br />

with stories ranging from the mean streets of Mariupol to wizards and dragons!<br />

Critically acclaimed internationally, Almost Holy is<br />

an often harrowing documentary that tracks Gennady<br />

Mokhnenko, a larger than life Ukrainian pastor, nicknamed<br />

In the documentary, Close Relations, director, Vitaly<br />

Mansky, brilliantly uses the prism of his own large extended<br />

family to explore contemporary divisions in<br />

Ukrainian society resulting from both the collapse of<br />

the Soviet Union and the current occupation of eastern<br />

Ukraine by Russia.<br />

That Never Happened provides a fascinating historical<br />

recounting of Canada’s World War 1 internment<br />

operations whereby over 80,000 East European immigrants,<br />

mostly Ukrainian, were forced to register as<br />

“enemy aliens”. Some 8000 individuals who failed to<br />

In this gripping drama, Daryna returns to her Ukrainian<br />

village after spending two years in Italy working<br />

as a maid in the house of a rich divorced lawyer and his<br />

bitter mother.<br />

Daryna’s earnings have made it possible for her husband<br />

to build a new house in the village and enable her<br />

register or were unemployed or simply indigent, were<br />

put into forced labour camps under armed guard. Beginning<br />

n the 1980’s, several individuals took it upon<br />

themselves to reclaim this forgotten chapter in Canadian<br />

history.<br />

The Dragon Spell is a wondrous animated tale about<br />

Nicky, a young boy who embarks on a great adventure<br />

to save both the world of humans and the world<br />

of magic from the evil intentions of a witch possessed<br />

by the ghost of a dragon.<br />

Ukrainian Sheris is a documentary portrait of two<br />

newly appointed sheris in a remote village in eastern<br />

Ukraine. Events in this lm turn comic and tragic.<br />

Making their rounds over country trails in a 1973<br />

yellow Lada, the duo tackle thefts of ducks and bicycles,<br />

accusations of adultery and the mysterious disappearance<br />

of village dogs. The sheris also do plumbing<br />

and electrical work.<br />

When Russia invades Crimea deeper conflicts arise<br />

over which the sheris have little control.<br />

Nicky is joined on his quest by his friends Eddie, a<br />

bat who is wizard in training and Rocky, a feral child.<br />

Through their exploits the adventurers learn what it<br />

means to be a true hero.<br />
