car, bus or your backpack. Good choices
of mess-free snacks are almonds, trail
mix, granola bars or raw vegetables with
hummus. If perishable food (e.g. sandwiches)
is preferred, make sure you have a cold
source such as an ice pack to keep foods
properly chilled to prevent food poisoning
which will make your journey memorable in
the wrong way!
Always remember to rehydrate
throughout the day. Drinking water
helps with the regulation of your body
temperature, especially during hot weather.
If you are travelling to cold countries, make
it a point to drink water even when you
are not thirsty. Drinking plenty of water
will flush out toxins from your body, keep
your skin fresh and help prevent unhealthy
cravings that one would normally experience
on the road.
Post-adventure Meal - Replenish
Your Body with the Right Nutrients
A good meal to replenish your body
nutrients should be one that is rich in
carbohydrate and lean protein. Give yourself
a pat on the back. After an eventful day, you
can allow yourself to indulge a little to fulfil
the sweet tooth craving that you have as the
body can afford to take in high glycaemic
index food to replenish your glycogen
(energy) stores. If you have engaged in
strenuous or adventurous activities and have
been sweating profusely, it is necessary to
include a source of fluid and electrolytes to
rehydrate effectively. Sports drinks, which
typically include the electrolytes sodium
and potassium can do the trick. Otherwise,
natural foods such as cantaloupe, honeydew,
bananas, spinach, tomato juice, carrot juice,
sweet potatoes or low-fat milk are also good
sources of potassium.
Being in a foreign country with
unfamiliar surroundings sometimes limit
your access to healthy food and the ability
to obtain a balanced diet. It is a good idea to
pack your multivitamins to supplement your
diet during this time.
Stay Hydrated Up in the Air
Are you flying to your holiday destination?
Aircraft cabins are generally very dry and
dehydration can occur easily. To combat
dehydration, drink lots of water but do it
slowly and regularly because drinking
too much water suddenly will cause you
the inconvenience of having to visit the
lavatory frequently. Always bear in mind
that coffee and alcohol have a diuretic
effect, which will cause the body to
produce an increased amount of urine. Try
to keep coffee and alcohol consumption to
a minimum level.
You Can Have Fun and Stay Healthy
at the Same Time
When it comes to a holiday, most people
are excited to plan their vacation and
pack their bags, but very few give much
thought to how to stay healthy throughout
the holiday. The right choice of food
and plenty of fluid help to sustain your
energy levels, fuel your muscles, boost
your immune system and help you recover
quickly.
A well-balanced breakfast meal which
includes a mixture of lean protein and highfiber
foods such as whole grains, fruits and
vegetables provides an excellent source of
fuel to kick-start your day with sustainedhours
of energy
