42 COOLEST CARS / ROLL-OUT THE COOL WALL
WORDS BY GERARD JUDE CASTILLO
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROWAN HORNCASTLE
There are some cars that are truly close to our hearts. Despite
the sheer number of makes and models that come out, some
nameplates just refuse to fade into the motoring sunset. One
of these is the Jaguar E-Type.
Many folks have called it one of the most beautiful cars in
history. And this is what the gentlemen at Eagle think as well.
In fact, Henry Pearman and his team work on nothing but
E-Types, restoring this classic for a good 30 years now. But
they don’t just put Jags back together and roll these back out
on the road. Rather, they’ve come up with the Eagle Low Drag GT.
On the outside, it looks like your typical ’60s E-Type. Under the metal,
however, is a modern-day automobile boasting a 4.7-liter six-cylinder motor
(shared with the XK), a five-speed manual transmission, and creature
comforts like air-conditioning and a quiet ride. With the engine producing
roughly 345hp and 488Nm to haul a body weighing a bit over one ton, this car
is a grand tourer in the truest sense of the word. It’s effortless and refined,
and has a mug that will turn heads at every turn of the wheel.
So why not get a pre-owned E-Type? Eagle says this is for those who want
the classic car, minus the headaches that come with owning one. Fair
warning, though: Be willing to part with £650,000. Think it’s worth it? It will
be, if you are the kind of guy who enjoys driving a classic car but with modern
underpinnings. And its one hell of a Jag, after all.
