A Postcard from Manchester The UK’s third most visited city is home to the oldest library in the English speaking world, it’s the birthplace of Emmeline Pankhurst, founder of the Suffragette movement, and is a major creative centre with architecture, fashion, music, film and the performing arts.
As well as having more rock stars per head than any other British city, Manchester has been incredibly successful with Nobel prizes; so far 25 Nobel Laureates have worked at the University of Manchester and its institutions. Hacienda co-owner and New Order bassist Peter Hook had six bass guitars made from the dance floor floorboards, complete with cigarette burns and stiletto heel marks! Photo © by David Dixon (cc-by-sa/2.0) Film fans and vinyl fanatics will love the Northern Quarter for its numerous record stores and recognisable locations used in big screen hits Alfie, Captain America: The First Avenger and Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes. There’s also a good variety of bars and cafes and Affleck’s Palace, a former department store is now a multi-story bazaar of alternative clothing, piercings and tattoos.
