Some rituals and traditions are worth holding
onto and afternoon tea is definitely one. Originally
used to quell the hunger pangs between lunch
and dinner, this elegant and refined ceremony
of carefully crafted cakes, China tea pots and a
collection of delicate sandwiches has been making
people happy for centuries. Quite simply, a tier of
tasty treats enjoyed in a special setting with good
company will never go out of fashion.
In the words of Henry James:
There are few hours in life more agreeable than
the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as
afternoon tea.
9

The outstanding Mercure Kenwood Hall Hotel
and Spa in Sheffield is serving afternoon tea in a
quintessential style befitting the elegant ritual, in
their recently launched Laura Ashley Tea Room.
Open from 10am to 6pm and with its distinctive
signature Laura Ashley décor and fine china, guests
are certainly in for an hour or two of sophistication
in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
The Tea Room has a choice of menus, starting at
£20 for traditional afternoon tea up to £30 for the
champagne tea. There’s also a savoury option for
those who don’t have a sweet tooth and proving
you’re never too young to experience this great
British tradition, a children’s afternoon tea is also
available for just £10.
The tiers of temptation include tantalizing
sandwiches of goats’ cheese and beetroot, honey
roast ham and piccalilli, Scottish smoked salmon
and cream cheese plus tasty Henderson’s rarebit.
For fans of savoury treats, and if it’s not too much
of a sacrifice, hold back on these tasty sandwiches
and enjoy the most deliciously soft boiled Scotch
egg imaginable, flaky pastry pork pie and a piece
of moist fruit cake with Wensleydale cheese before
savouring light and fluffy buttermilk scones, jam
and clotted cream.
Then pause. And linger over the Laura Ashley loose
leaf tea and a Prosecco refill!
The top tier of the Laura Ashley cake stand is a
beauty! Macaroons, mousses and mouth-wateringly
scrumptious cakes and pastries provide the final
sugar rush on what is a lovely experience delivered
with thoughtful service. Gluten and vegan options
are available along with morning brunch so
whether you’re staying at the hotel or visiting
Sheffield for the day, do make time for tea here.
10

Afternoon Delights!
One of the beauties of Kenwood Hall Hotel is the
stunning grounds and on a summer day guests
can enjoy the Laura Ashley Tea Room experience
on a sunny terrace overlooking the landscaped
gardens. Mature trees and manicured lawns lead
down to a lovely lake with coots gently drifting
between the lilies and squirrels darting out
from behind trees. The trail that runs around the
back of the hotel is a charming walk and as
Kenwood Hall Hotel is dog friendly, the shaded
woods are perfect for dogs on a hot day.
11

Nested in a lovely countryside location on
the borders of Essex and Hertfordshire, Great
Hallingbury Manor Hotel combines traditional
Tudor design with a contemporary boutique style
interior. Afternoon tea guests can make the most of
the beautiful grounds and enjoy views of the well
kept gardens and lake which combine to create
a stunning setting for the ritual of afternoon tea. A
popular hotel for business travellers and with brides
and grooms wanting an enviable backdrop to their
big day, Great Hallingbury is a sparkling gem that
doesn’t disappoint.
Afternoon tea is an indulgent affair with classic
finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones, exquisite
sweets and home-cooked cakes. Whether relaxing
in the restaurant or the hotel grounds, afternoon
tea at Great Hallingbury can be upgraded to an
afternoon of G&Tea. Choose from over ten gins on
the premium gin club menu to add a refreshing
twist to the tradition!
12

Afternoon Delights!
Bordering Cambridgeshire and the historic town
of Wisbech, the Crown Lodge Hotel in Outwell
serves a stunning afternoon tea from 3pm-5pm,
Monday to Saturday in the award-winning Moorings
Restaurant. The beautiful slate and chrome tiers of
tastiness include everything you would anticipate;
freshly prepared sandwiches, freshly baked scones,
delicate pastries, traditional fruit cake and luxurious
tea cakes.
With a pot of Darjeeling, Earl Grey, Assam or English
breakfast tea or a cafetiere of coffee on the side,
afternoon tea at Crown Lodge Hotel is £19 or £26
if you decide to start the occasion with a glass of
champagne on arrival.
There have been plenty of golf success stories
over the years; Rory Mcllroy, a four-time major
champion was world number one in the Official
World Golf Ranking for a total of 95 weeks and
Lee Westwood OBE was one of only a few golfers
who won tournaments on five different continents
(Europe, Asia, North America, Africa and Oceania)
and had victories on the European and PGA tours.
Today, over 700,000 golfers hold memberships in
some of the 1,900 clubs in the UK. This summer
you might be planning a few days away to perfect
your swing, enjoy some friendly competition or
just experience play on courses a little further away
from home. Whatever the reasoning, we’ve selected
a few of the UK’s hotels that also benefit from
fantastic golf facilities. They make a stay and play
weekend away even more enticing!
32

Into the Woods!
First tee off is from Somerfield Lodge in Wales where
newly renovated lodges welcome guests and golfers
for overnight stays.
On the gateway to Gower Peninsula, Clyne Golf
Course overlooks Swansea to the east, the Bristol
Channel and Mumbles to the south and the dramatic
Brecon Beacons to the north.
Listed in the 200 Best Golf Courses in the British Isles
by legendary golfer Peter Allis, Clyne is also ranked
in the Top 30 Courses in Wales by Golf World and
the website Top 100 Golf Courses. The par 72 course
was designed by Harry Colt in the 1920s and is
suitable for all handicaps. Guest golfers can
take advantage of all year round grass tees and
championship quality greens.
Offering a great stay and play package, guests can
enjoy a delicious breakfast, two rounds of golf and
an evening meal, as well as en-suite accommodation
in Somerfield Lodge @ Clyne Golf Club.
33

From Wales to the West Midlands; the Best Western
Windmill Village Hotel is a great option for golfers
looking to catch up with fellow fanatics in a
central UK location. Positioned on the outskirts of
Coventry, the 4-star hotel enjoys a secluded setting
and offers comfortable refurbished rooms for a
great night’s sleep.
The main attraction for golf lovers is the fantastic
18-hole, par 70 parkland golf course, which makes
for a challenging game. At 5,184 yards, there’s
plenty of greenery and the surrounding countryside
gives golfers great views to enjoy between shots!
A practice golf area, putting green and a pro golf
shop are available and the Fairways Restaurant and
Cellar is perfect for the all important post match
pint and light bites!
Being in such a central location, Best Western
Windmill Village Hotel Golf and Leisure
is convenient for discovering more of the
Midlands’ attractions. Why not combine a
golf stay with a rugby match at the nearby
Ricoh Arena? Get your timing right and you
could find Birmingham NEC has a golf expo
on too!
34

Into the Woods!
Less than thirty minutes from Coventry is the
Hallmark Hotel The Welcombe Stratford-upon-Avon.
Surrounded by 157 acres of landscaped gardens
and close to Shakespeare’s birthplace, this hotel
boasts 78 guest rooms which blend modern day
comfort with historic charm. A delicious cooked
or continental breakfast will kick-start the day and
hungry golfers can look forward to evening dining
with modern British and European cuisine at the
award-winning Trevelyan Restaurant.
The European Seniors Tour Ryder Cup has been
hosted here and golfers of all handicaps will enjoy
the 6,288 yards of greens and fairways where a
game of 18, 36 or 54-holes is available.
A one, two or three night golf package that includes
bed, breakfast and dinner is available at the
Hallmark Hotel The Welcome Startford-upon-Avon.
For golfers who love history, culture and the arts, a
stay here is a match on a par with Romeo and Juliet
without any of the drama!
35

Head south of Stratford-upon-Avon towards
Swindon and Chippenham and you’ll find the
Wiltshire Hotel in Royal Wootton Bassett. The
golf course here was designed by Peter Allis in 1991
and has been strategically constructed to take
advantage of the many natural lakes. At 6,628
yards, the par 72 course has water hazards on 13
holes and with large greens, golfers rarely ever
have a straight forward putt!
The hotel is home to 50 en-suite guest rooms and
excellent leisure facilities which include a 20 yard
indoor swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room
and a fully equipped fitness centre.
36

Into the Woods!
Offering first-class accommodation in 90 en-suite
guest rooms, Wensum Valley Hotel Golf and
Country Club is just a short distance from the
historic city of Norwich and offers golfers a choice of
two courses. Ideal for both novices and experienced
players, there is also a 12-bay floodlit driving range,
putting practice area and a well-stocked golf shop
on-site.
At 6,900 yards, the championship par 72 Wensum
course hosted the 2013 Motocaddy Masters season
opener of the PGA EuroPro Tour. The shorter Valley
Course features tree-lined fairways, well placed
bunkers and challenging greens on the gentle
slopes of Wensum Valley.
This hotel is another great all-rounder where
excellent leisure facilities add to the appeal. A
