BENT REJ 

IN THE BEGINNING 

Danish photographer, Bent Rej, began taking pictures of rock and 

pop stars in the mid-sixties, which is when he met and got to know 

The Rolling Stones. Bent accompanied The Stones on the Satisfaction 

tour, where he captured a unique collection of iconic, and rarely 

seen photographs of the band before they became the icons of rock.

In 1965, while working for a Danish newspaper, 

Bent Rej received the assignment of 

chronicling The Rolling Stones’ during the 

Scandinavian and German legs of their 

Satisfaction tour through Europe. Things 

went so well that for an entire year Bent 

pretty much never left the young musicians. 

His work evolved into close friendships, 

especially with band’s founder Brian Jones 

and soon he became part of The Stones’ 

entourage. 

Bent’s extraordinary collection of Stones 

photographs taken during the spring of 

‘65 to the summer of ‘66 reveals a fascinating 

glimpse of a moment in the history of 

rock. It was during this period that the 

band found their feet and gained a lot of 

confidence, but no one knew that they 

would turn out to be some of the biggest 

rock icons of the world. 

“No photographer up to this point in our 

career, or since for that matter, has had the 

access to The Stones that Bent had. He was 

right there, on the spot, at a crucial period 

in our career, and in our lives like no other 

photographer before or since. It’s the closeness 

that makes what Bent has done 

unique” say’s Bill Wyman in the book “In 

The Beginning” that presents Bent Rej’s 

fine collection of Stones photographs. 


Mick wasn’t exactly the hospitable 

type, and I understood that as soon 

as the door was opened. He looked 

awfully upset. Later we’re told why; 

a sick cat and a sour Chrissie Shrimpton. 

He did smile while I photographed 

him but only because of our private 

friendship and all the other Stones 

had been through the same thing.”

BRIAN JONES 


“This was probably Brian’s happiest time. He 

was relaxed, his band was doing better than ever 

and there seemed no limits to the heights they 

could climb. Brian almost always walked around 

barefooted at home, it was not something specially 

posed for these photographs. I stayed in Brian’s 

home on all my visits to London over the year.”

“Between shows in Malmö, 

there was nowhere to eat at 

the venue, so Niels Wenkens 

went knocking at people’s 

homes and persuaded them 

to make up some open sandwiches 

so the band could eat. 

Keith and Brian had a food 

fight and ended up tossing 

an open sandwich out of the 

window to the waiting fans. 

Malmö was the last night of 

the tour and after the rest of 

the band flew home to London 

Brian stayed at my house in 

Copenhagen for a holiday.”

“I photographed Mick on the roof of his rented 

mews apartment. Mick was the last one of The 

Stones who agreed to me photographing him in 

his home. I needed him to do it because without 

him the feature I was doing for a magazine really 

didn’t work. It gave me an opportunity to play 

around with my new fish-eye lens”

THE STORYTELLER 

With a hungry approach to life and photography, 

Anders has managed to create an interesting 

and eventful career in the fashion 

industry. His interest in photography started at 

the young age of 10 when Anders began taking 

pictures of his surroundings. Growing up in a 

town by the northern coast of Denmark, he 

photographed everything from nature to his 

surfing buddies. His love for the outdoor and 

the ocean shows in the energy of his current 

work. 

After completing his education in Copenhagen 

Anders moved to Paris to assist other photographers 

and learn about the fashion industry. 

In 1990 Anders moved to New York to work 

with the brilliant Bruce Weber. He spent 5 thrilling 

years traveling with and assisting Bruce, 

we can only imagine what went down during 

their time together, placing Anders in the center 

of la crème de la crème of both fashion and 

movies. 

Anders images possess a vitality that threatens 

to jump off the page. He’s open and humble 

which has granted him access to get close and 

personal with the many celebrities he has portrayed. 

Anders tells a story, not with words but 

with captured moments. 

Anders Overgaard’s first book Nothing Left Behind (2017) is a 189 page coffee table book of the photographers 

favorite images of the famous annual Burning Man festival set in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert.
