Nothing remains…
Maybe our life is like a small seed.
That transforms into a sprout,
then a stunning flower,
that withers and eventually dries up beautifully…
Everything changes – in our family,
in Karmameju and in me.
Maybe due to my immense
life-hunger and my impatience.
“Change is inevitable – or, it is if you are inside
INFINITE CHANGES
Next year, Mette will celebrate her 20 th
anniversary with Karmameju. And her
10 th anniversary with Karmameju
Skincare. It has been 19 years with
changes and development. The vision
has always been to redefine wellness –
but the product/people journey would
have been impossible to predict back
in 1999.
Karmameju was founded in Copenhagen
after 10 years travelling internationally
as a model. During the
last 6 years in Manhattan, the love
for natural health, nature and Mettes
creative sides came to fruition.
When I was very young, I did not consider
myself to be creative, I was more
of a math girl – but the job as a model
was not “ticking all the boxes”, and
my spare time was where I further developed
my mind and my skills over
those ten years. I had a very jealous
boyfriend for many years, and he loved
when I was home fiddling with all
my projects, he was always “feeding”
this passion – I later realised it was a
way to keep me away from everything
that made him jealous.
I was sewing clothes, making perfume
blends, studying aromatherapy, I produced
scented candles in the kitchen,
made tea blends, wrote prose, took pictures,
made scrapbooks. I participated
in a “bachelor of science in natural
health”, cooked natural health food
experimentally for my friends non
stop. Although in hinsight it is limiting
to be in a relationship with a jealous
person, I am still ever so grateful that
he saw my creative sides, and helped
me pursue them.
The sum of changes remains constant.
During the 19 years with Karmameju,
Mette has had different business partners,
- originally Karmameju was founded
with her best friend Julie Krogstad,
today Julie remains her best friend, but
is no longer a part of at Karmameju.
The collections have changed: the
first range that was created was
a collection of Lounge Furniture,
following that came Living Accessories,
followed by a collection of Slow-
Wear clothes, and in 2010 the Pure,
Natural and Active Skincare entered
the Karmameju family of products.
36 | MY MAGAZINE MY MAGAZINE | 37

Mette Skjærbæk
The skincare is my “heart-project” – it
totally hit the spot for me, and I feel
like I have come home. I am so close
to the consumer with this range, and
I can truly make a difference. I get the
most exhillarating emails and messages
from people using Karmameju
Skincare: their over-sensitive skin has
been healed, the acne is gone, the cellulite
is vanishing, the skin texture is
improved, etc. Although I loved the
furniture, towels, the slow-wear, the
storage solutions etc. I feel that my
time is best spent creating integrityrich
skincare. The industry needs to
change, and we offer the consumers
an informed choice for their skincare.
My most important promise to the
consumers is to always avoid all CMR
substances (cancer, reproductive and
dna-change triggers). My goal was always
to make skincare with high skinimprovement
activity, but with no adverse
effect on the body. My mission
is to create skincare that I feel great
about my daughters using, they are
my most precious ones, thus being a
great focus for product development.
In 2012 more changes came about and
following many late nights of contemplating,
Karmameju was totally restructured.
The furniture collection
was sold to Skagerak (Trip Trap), and
several others design objects were sold
off too. All the patterns for the slowwear
collection was hidden in a safe
place, for possible later use. The rest
was terminated. Only remaining products
in the Karmameju collection in
2012 was the Skincare and a must-have
collection of bathrobes, onesies and
blankets.
We said goodbye to 80% of our colleagues,
and approx. 75% of our turnover.
We then hired as many new
colleagues, all people with expertise
within skincare. And then I crossed
my fingers! I was running myself
down, designing for 4 broad collections,
partifipating in fairs within
the different industries and trying to
38 | MY MAGAZINE MY MAGAZINE | 39

make my staff experts within as different
indutries as furniture, fashion
and skincare. So although I ran a major
risk in restructering Karmameju, I was
willing to take the consequence if it failed.
I have an immense desire and need to
feel that I am living my life, not just
running a marathon every day, and
because I feel I can really do a difference
within skincare, it had to be done. But
it was a risk.
Now, in 2018, it is time for change
again. The original visuel identity of
Karmameju Skincare, was groundbreaking
for a “green” skincare range,
in its playful and colourful univers –
however, the colours no longer fits
with the brand or the people behind it.
The products/ingredients/integrity is
too serious for neon and flashy colours.
We are moving into the “adult stage”
for Karmameju - no longer a child or a
teenager, my brand has grown up,
and I need to be able to “see the brand
in the future” – and even more important
for me is to FEEL what I am doing,
even if it means taking chances, again.
The visual identity of Karmameju will
make a 180 degree spin, into all the
colours that reflect what is inside the
products, the heart.
Commencing with the release of 3
face masks launched in May 18’, on to
the end of 18’, most of the colours will
change in the collection. Again I am
crossing my fingers, hoping it is the
right decision, but I am not sleepless
over it! I know we have to be brave to
progess, and my Karmameju life has
taught me to follow my gut instinct.
Change is inevitable – or, it is if you
are inside of my mind. I have such a
need to feel that I am making the
most of it – this beautiful gift: life.
Loosing my father and both my grandmothers
when I was 11, a great friend
when I was 15 and my brother when I
was 36, I am so utterly aware that life
is now. I drown, if I feel like I am not
“using” my life right, and although it
means difficult decisions like packing
up my life and returning to Denmark
in 1999 leaving all I had build behind.
Taking over Karmameju in 2008
when Julie stopped. Restructering
Karmameju in 2012. Pairing up with
new partners in Karmameju in 2014,
being divorced in 2016 or many of the
other phases I have been through –
then I have to do it! I need to smile
and laugh, dance and feel. I can’t just
“make do”.
I can’t stick to a success with Karmameju,
if the visuel identity no longer
touches me, and I will keep making
the changes that may give me bundles
of work or heartache, but that
also gives me wings to fly.
The Volcanic sand in PROUD exfoliating mask 01, is a natural,
mineral-rich skin purifier and exfoliator to reveal radiant and glowing skin.
I love the power of volcanos and think of the Portugise vulcano
this sand came from, each time I use the mask.
West African Shea Butter has been used in therapeutic skin care for thousands of years.
It’s origins go as far back as Cleopatra’s Egypt, where it was carried in large clay jars for cosmetic use.
Karmameju’s organic shea butter is integral in their lotion bases.
KRISTINA
DEMANT
Kristina Demant is a very intuitive photographer and director of photography with a deep
understanding of the art of both photography and filming. Yet her expressive talent is rooted
not only in her technique. Her artistry shines through her devotion to portraying a story in
everything that she captures. Demant characterizes her personal style as poetic quirkiness.
It is feminine, but with a twist of boyishness. She values the instant and spontaneous
moments of inspiration that she brings into her pictures.
G Y R I T H E
LEMCHE
Gyrithe Lemche has worked as a photographer for
a decade and does commercial work as well as art.
From her studio in Copenhagen she collaborates
with creative companies and magazines worldwide,
to create both commercial and editorial work.
“I love to enter the playground of art photography.
It is such a huge contrast to commercial photography,
where the goal is to advertice products or services,
and also to represential photography where specific
objects or events are in focus. When doing my art
pieces I can express my perceptions, my view on
the world.”
Many of Gyrithes works deals with places and
cultures, the city and the nature – not as opposites
but as landmarks of her geographical locations.
She has no fear of either beauty or ugliness, but
cannot escape a certain attention to colour and detail.
MARIE LOUISE
MUNKEGAARD
Marie Louise Munkegaard is a Copenhagen
based portrait, food and lifestyle photographer
whose work regularly appears in publications
worldwide. Her style is clear and vivid, with an
unmistakably Nordic aesthetic. She focuses
on the natural beauty of food, such as
colors, textures and shapes, and when
shooting people or spaces, her eye for
ligthing and framing brings an added
dimension to each project.
At Papermoiselle.com she unfolds her love for
textures and lighting in projects that are
truly personal. Photographic works that has
come to life, from places like Iceland and
her beloved Bornholm.
The source of my inspiration
is rooted in the simplicity of
