A REFRESHED TRIO RESTAURANT BURSTS WITH FLAVOR AND COLOR
by Juli Ragsdale
LIVEMAGAZINETV
TRIO, where Palm Springs EATs,DRINKs and MEETs has reopened
after a two month closure due to fire, smoke and water
damage. “When bad things happen it’s important we turn it
around and make it a good thing”, said owner Tony Marchese. “I
decided to give TRIO a refresh. It’s like when you look at someone
and you say to yourself: She looks good. Has she had work
done or not?”
TRIO is open seven days a week. They have an amazing 3 course
prix fixe from 11 to 6pm (for only $19.99). Happy Hour runs daily
from 11am to 7pm in the bar and a portion of the patio. Dinner is
nightly, 3-10 pm, and runs until 11pm Friday and Sunday for late
night fun.
TRIO will be celebrating their eighth year in November with
another over the top live event. This time featuring legendary
disco diva, Linda Clifford performing her hits like Red Light,
Runaway Love and Shoot Your Best Shot. Tony Marchese is
known for his philanthropic activities with so many groups and
this evening is no exception. A portion of the evening proceeds
go to AIDS Assistance Program and Palm Springs High School
Arts program.
Tony pledged, “ I promise Palm Springs an amazing next eight
years.” Tony continued,” Thank you for all your support. I never
take for granted what we have and what we are building. See
you soon!”
It is the same TRIO, now beautifully refreshed with paint and
wallpaper from Farrow & Ball. There are some amazing new
fixtures from Design Within Reach, and Uptown’s Christopher
Anthony. The carpeting is by Flooring Innovations. There are
Shag art pieces as well as new artwork from Colin Fisher Studios.
And the list of freshening continues.
They have added some various new items to all the menus. I
anticipate the Coachella Valley Dates with special daily preparations,
and the Norwegian Ocean Trout (similar to its cousin
Salmon but with a creamy texture and rich flavor).
The refreshed TRIO is a must see, er, taste! Whether because
like us, you sorely missed a true favorite venue, or because you
have previously indulged in the fun as a guest. TRIO is not new.
It is just improved as we all do in age. This year they will celebrate
their eighth year! Kudos to Tony and the crew for making
this a legendary venue and a true Uptown style setter for Palm
Springs.

DESERT DENTAL
ALTERNATIVES
Bruno Lemay, DMD
acid to decalcify the tooth. It is called dental
plaque and it forms very quick after eating.
The better hygiene a person has, the less
they will have decay. It takes both sugar and
plaque to decay a tooth. The more you brush
and floss, the more plaque removed and the
less risk of decay.
Additionally, elderly patients also tend to have
more decay. It is more obvious with elderly
patients who are loosing their dexterity, and
in general they tend to eat more sweets more
often, and not brush as often.
There is also another component that needs
to be explained here. In the mouth there are
several types of bacteria. Some are responsible
for gum disease and some are responsible
for decay. Some people may have the best
hygiene and still have gum disease and some
who have the worst hygiene may not suffer
from gum disease at all. This is because they
do not have the bacteria responsible for gum
disease. Same thing for decay. Some people
will be more susceptible to decay then others
even if they eat just a little sugar and have
decent dental hygiene. That is because they
have that kind of bacteria in their mouth in a
higher rate then another person. But that is
not a reasonable excuse. More brushing
and plaque control with a topical fluoride
application daily, preferably with a special
personal tray made at the dental office will
help.
Very rarely a person will suffer from gum
disease and a high rate of decay. It is
generally one or the other. If someone has
a high rate of decay, in general they will
not suffer from gum disease like bone loss,
periodontal pockets and tooth mobility.
It is a proven fact though, that the better
the dental hygiene you have and the better
your diet is in terms of limiting sugar intake,
the healthier your gums and teeth will be.
So, it is not true that decay affect only
kids. As long as you have one tooth in your
mouth you are subject to get decay if you
leave dental plaque on it and eat sugar!
The best way to prevent that is to have
good dental hygiene at home and brushing
after any sugar intake, and to visit your
dentist 2 to 3 times a year.
Dr. Bruno Lemay
Do you think that dental cavities are
problems only for children?
It is a general belief that cavities are for kids
only. But in fact, cavities affect all ages!
The reason why cavities are more prevalent
in children is mainly the fact that they tend
to eat more sugar and have poor hygiene
habits. However, when looking at the cause
of decay, which is basically plaque with the
presence of sugar, it is easy to understand
that cavities can happen at any age even if
your mouth is full of crowns.
Of course there are some people who have
teeth that are softer then others and are
easier to decay but that affects only 1% of
the population. Basically any diet rich in
sugar will increase your chance of decay.
Soft drinks, candies and anything sweet
will have a potency to create decay in the
presence of dental plaque. Of course in
order to create decay there has to be the
bacteria that will transfer the sugar into
Michael Holmes’ Purple Room
Welcomes
Executive Chef Alen Badzek
Award-Winning Chef Is Among Nation’s Finest.
September 30, 2017, Palm Springs, CA – Michael Holmes’
Purple Room is pleased to announce that award-winning
Chef Alen Badzak has been hired as the club’s new
Executive Chef. Badzak, who has worked in the Coachella
Valley since 2012, studied the Culinary Arts in Europe,
and brings a wealth
of experience, as
well as his four star
Zagat-Rated cuisine
to Michael Holmes’
Purple Room.
“We are super excited
to have Chef Badzak
on board,” said owner
Michael Holmes. “He
is a great addition
to our team, and his
menu has already
earned praise from a
number of our returning
customers.”
Badzak says that
although he did not
completely rework
the menu, he did add
his own personal touch to each of the dishes he decided
to keep. “We wanted to retain several of the more
popular dishes,” he says. “But in each case, I tested the
recipe, and tasted the dish myself. After that, I made a
few adjustments. I like very intense flavors, whether they
are subtle or strong. For me, flavor always comes first.
After that, it’s presentation. The end result is a successful
execution of both.”
Updated main dishes on the dinner menu include the
Half Jidori Chicken, stuffed with sun dried tomato and
basil, and served with a Dijon cream sauce, along with
sides of garlic spinach & risotto; a half rack of New
Zealand Lamb, served with Parmesan herb polenta, and
sauced with a demi red wine reduction; a Creekstone
Farms New York Steak that has been rubbed with an Applewood
smoked rub, and served with Gruyere whipped
mashed potatoes and asparagus; and Pork Tenderloin
Medallions, served with Creamy risotto and blueberry chutney.
New additions to the dinner menu include a Seafood Tower with Grilled lobster
tail, shrimp, and scallops, served with a warm quinoa salad and rosemary
infused butter; Seared Ahi with Jasmine rice, julienne vegetables, and a soy
citrus sauce; Porcini Ravioli with Prosciutto, Madeira, truffle cream sauce, and a
balsamic reduction; and Linguini Bolognese with Veal, beef and porcini mushrooms.
“We’ve also added a suggested wine pairing to each main dish on the
dinner menu,” Badzak continued, “because adding the wine intensifies both the
gustatory and the olfactory flavors of the food.”
Michael Holmes’ Purple Room is open Tuesday through Sunday, with Happy
Hour daily from 4pm to 6pm (4pm to 5pm on Sundays). Enjoy complimentary
entertainment from 6:30pm to 9:30pm Tuesday through Thursday, and ticketed
dinner shows with nationally recognized talent on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Wang’s in the Desert opened in 2004 and continues to build
and grow. Lonnie Landers, who once invested in a couple of
friends’ dream, is now the sole owner of the award-winning Pan
Asian restaurant. Located in beautiful downtown Palm Springs,
Wang’s concept is Pan Asian Cuisine combining different types
of cooking influences including Sichuan, Cantonese, Mandarin,
Japanese, Thai and Korean. Wang’s uses only the finest and
freshest ingredients found throughout Asia and the Pacific. For
years the restaurant has been awarded for its amazing cuisine.
Wang’s has won the Desert Sun Newspaper’s ‘Best of the Valley’
award for Best Chinese Restaurant for the last three years in
a row.
Diners’ Choice, just ranked Wang’s in the Top 10 most ‘Vibrant
Bar Scene’ in The Greater Palm Springs area, as rated by over
400,000 OpenTable users. And it is no wonder that the feedback
from thousands of local diners indicates their fun. In the
last year alone, Wang’s raised the bar for local entertainment.
Landers completely amped up the exposure of local talent and
national talent, such as America’s Got Talent finalist, Brian Justin
Crum. Six nights a week you can find real artists entertaining
in a huge variety of genres!
Relying on tried and true relationships which had grown with his
success, Lonnie engaged LIVE Magazine TV in the pursuit of an
even more incredible marketing campaign. We began to create
custom television advertisements to illustrate the varied entertainment
and dining offerings that are Wang’s! The place is a wondrous
carousel of fun and it has been a challenge to capture just a
part of it in thirty second bites! Here are just a few of them:
It was a warm summer night when we shot the TV commercial
featuring the Pan Asian Cuisine at Wang’s in the
Desert. The kitchen was already in high gear as they
prepped their daily freshness..The scent of garlic and
ginger wafted as we began our set ups. This commercial
was scripted and written in a slow pace to show Wang’s
as a place to slow down a little, have an amazing dinner
and then some fun out on the patio with cocktails and a
full menu as well. The appetizers are delicious. Some of
our favorites are the fish and chips. So fresh and lightly
crunchy...so good! Soups are always great in this season
with the fresh cool mountain air. The patio at Wang’s is
such a fun place to hang out. It is a super great place to
bring out of town guest so that your friends can mingle
and enjoy meeting local business owners, real estate
agents, industry people and tourist alike who tend to
hang out at Wang’s.
Check out our star of the commercial, David Lane, who is
not only a great manager but a cool person who cares a
great deal about his customers.
We were finished by nine or so that night so we wrapped
up and joined the crowd on the patio for some bites and
drinks! Then we ordered a dinner to take home for lunch
the next day, right?

The first commercial we produced
featured Gennine Francis.
We captured Gennine’s essence as she
captured the Essence of Whitney!
Gennine performs every other Sunday
on the patio at Wangs in the Desert.
Get there early for the good seats!
We were excited to make the commercial featuring Alex Santana as we have known Alex
for several years and have watched his career expand. Alex brings romance and a sense
of big city entertainment in a smaller and quaint up close venue, Actually called The Venue
at Wangs! Amber Lane has been busy building up an incredible line-up at Wangs. Amber
also manages the ever changing website considering all the entertainment changes
and specials. So we just got some amazing clips of Alex! Check out the commercial and
most importantly come to Wang’s and see Alex in person and enjoy the great food!
Linda Clifford has made her mark among the classic R&B
singers and also as a legendary disco diva. Electrifying audiences
with her music and widely celebrated performances, this
multi-talented and dynamic entertainer’s accomplishments are
vast.
TRIO Restaurant is celebrating their 8th Birthday and owner,
Tony Marchese would like for you all to come, see, and hear
Linda Clifford sing songs like, “If my friends could see me now?”.
It will be a night of fun celebration at TRIO.
Using her talent for numerous charitable causes, Linda has
raised over $1,000,000 the last time you performed for
them! You helped raise that , you know?
Linda: (laughter begins) You know , when I heard that I was
like...wow, that is so wonderful! But I think a lot of people in
Palm Springs and AAP helped make that happen…
Levvy: We are so happy to have you back in town!
Linda: I am so thrilled to be back! And I keep telling my husband
because he has never been to Palm Springs. I tell him
“honey you have to go!” So he will be coming with me.
Levvy: He will have a great experience
here in Palm Springs!
Linda: Yes. It is such a beautiful place
and has that hometown feel. The people
are so nice. It’s like a big family.
Levvy: Speaking of family, how
many children do you have?
performed at the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon,
The Ronald McDonald House Benefit with American Idol’s Clay
Aiken and Divas Simply Singing, which benefits the Angel Food
Network, delivering food for adults and children with AIDS/HIV.
So please come be a part of a magical night in the newly
remodeled TRIO Restaurant November 6th, 4-6PM (Call for
details).
I have interviewed Linda before and it is always a delight and a
memorable one at that! I literally danced the night away to her
music! Our conversation lasted about 30 minutes.
Levvy: Linda first I want to thank AAP, all of their supporters,
and you specifically, Linda. With your help and name, AAP
Linda: I have a boy and a girl. My
son has given me two beautiful
grandchildren. And my beautiful
daughter is in Los Angeles. We are
all spread out.
Levvy: I know how time can fly and loved ones live far
away. I have fond memories of sitting around with high
school friends and listening to your music while we all had so
much fun as teenagers. Your career started in 1972 and I can
remember all the fun TV shows you were in. I loved these
types of shows. This is what inspired me to be involved in the
music business on the video side of things. There you were on
‘American Bandstand’ , ‘Soul Train’ and on the Billboard at #1
and then the Grammys, where you received a coveted nomination.
The 70’s brought us disco . How did you blend your Blues and
Jazz to disco?

Linda: You know it was such a strange
thing. It happened that one of the secretaries
from the record label that I was
signed to had me come in for a meeting.
They said, “We want you do this song for a
Broadway show. It turned out to be , “If you
friends could see me now!”. They put the
track down and had these amazing vocal
parts and the music was just so awesome.
I became convinced. And that is how it all
started.
Levvy: Linda ,what advice do you have for
up and coming artists?
Linda: Treat people the way you want to be
treated.
Levvy: You make the audience have so
much fun with your music...I love that!
Linda: You know you can feel that. When I
am on stage I can literally feel the audience.
Levvy: We might call that ‘Radiant Energy’
and that you have, Linda Clifford!
Linda: Well thank you Levvy. That’s nice. I
am just so happy to back at TRIO Restaurant
and with all of you wonderful people in
Palm Springs!

Paper Animated - PG13 Paper animation is a unique form of art that
includes cutout animation as a form of stop-motion animation. This specific
genre uses flat characters, props and backgrounds cut from materials such as
paper, card, stiff fabric or photographs. Tension and emotion is created through
every folded sheet of paper, carefully captured through individual frames placed
together to tell a powerful and interesting story.
1:00PM SCREENING
Classic & Traditional Animated - PG13 Animation has a rich history and is the act of
creating the illusion of movement through still images. This method actually began
hundreds of years ago. After a number of pioneers began creating animated shorts in the early
20th century (1914’s Gertie the Dinosaur being a notable example), the very first feature-length
animation created using traditional methods was entitled “El Apóstol.” Traditional animation is a
technique where each frame is drawn by hand. This technique was the dominant form of animation
in cinema until the advent of computer animation. The collections of shorts in this segment
will take you back in time to the beginning of this amazing and unique visual art form.
2:00PM SCREENING
Hand Painted Animated - PG13.In this technique, slow drying paints are used on
a glass canvas, which allows the animator to manipulate the art and photograph them
simultaneously. Sometimes turpentine is used in the paints, which makes it easier for the
animator to work on the paintings. It’s a tough and laborious task being that you have
to paint on a glass canvas. After much blending in post production, this form is a true
aesthetic treat.
THURSDAY,- NOVEMBER 9, 2017 ANNENBERG THEATER
Amazing Stop-Motion- R Stop motion animation (also called “stop frame animation”)
is animation that is captured one frame at time, with physical objects that are
moved between the frames. When you play back the sequence of images rapidly, it
creates the illusion of movement. The short animated films in this segment take you
into dramatic stories from around the world in a realistic looking fantasy of hand-crafted
dolls and sets that will inspire endless thought and conversation.
It is a time when the entire world is attacked. Only this time by
weather! What could be causing these catastrophic events?
The film Geostorm is set in the not too distant future. Existence
something has gone wrong—the system built
to protect the Earth is attacking it, and it’s
a race against the clock to uncover the real
threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes
out everything...and everyone along with it.
In 1969, while a cultural revolution with a soundtrack to match
swept through the free world, there was still one place that refused
to change with the times: newsrooms. Good Girls Revolt follows a
group of young female researchers, Jane Hollander (Anna Camp),
Patti Robinson (Genevieve Angelson) and Cindy Reston (Erin Darke)
at News of the Week, who simply ask to be treated fairly. Their
revolutionary request, led by lawyer Eleanor Holmes Norton (Joy
Bryant), will spark convulsive changes and upend marriages, careers,
sex lives, love lives, and friendships. The pilot is inspired by the landmark
sexual discrimination cases chronicled in Lynn Povich’s book,
Like a drill routine, STEP takes off at a brisk-pace with a fly-on-thewall
style camera that drops the audience directly into the worlds
of its young heroines. Lipitz worked closely with cinematographer
Casey Regan and their small, tight-knit film crew to create a style
of following the girls that would be immersive without ever being
intrusive.
“We always wanted the film to be as much verité, capturing these raw
lives, as possible, and then along the way we added in interviews with
the step team members and their families to connect the scenes into
a stronger narrative,” explains Cantor.
The camera captures the girls’ everyday lives in a verité way as they
buckle down to graduate, apply for colleges and await anxiously to
find out if they got into their top choices. But then the film becomes
a dynamic performance, as the camera sets off with the girls to the
Bowie State step competition, where high school teams from Maryland,
Delaware and Virginia face off.
As they took the stage at Bowie State for the competition, Lipitz
crouched in the wings watching. There would only ever be this singular
moment and she couldn’t be sure of what would actually happen.
“When they were performing at Bowie State, it was like somebody
sprinkled fairy dust over them,” she remembers. “Something had
changed in them. Win or lose, they felt like winners in that moment
because you could see they felt so good about themselves. All of the
teamwork, the coaching, the having people who care about you look
you in the eye and tell you how it is, led to this moment.”
With the shooting wrapped and the girls’ heading off for their last
summer break before their college careers would begin, Lipitz headed
for the editing room with associate editor Arielle Davis and editor
Penelope Falk (JOAN RIVERS: A PIECE OF WORK, BRIGHT LIGHTS:
STARRING CARRIE FISHER AND DEBBIE REYNOLDS, MAIDENTRIP)
who is renown for her structural finesse with verité stories.
“The editing was one of the biggest challenges,” notes Cantor. “We really
wanted to balance these different individual stories with the story
of the team and that’s a tough thing to pull off, so it took some time to
figure out exactly how to interweave it all into the final structure.”
More final touches were put on the film with a soulful score from the
team of Emmy-nominated composer Laura Karpman and R&B star
Raphael Saadiq, who was deeply moved by the film.
In cutting the film, Lipitz aimed for a fast-paced entertaining throughline,
but the bottom line was inspiration. “Maybe mothers and fathers
and first-generation students who think that college is not possible
for them will see this and realize they have options,” she says. “Maybe
they’ll realize they can go to a college counselor and set up a meeting
and take advantage of whatever kind of help is available for them. If
that happens, to me that is the ultimate form of success.”
Cantor believes the film will resonate not just with other teens but also
with audiences of all kinds. “I think this is a story that can draw not
only young people but audiences from all walks of lives and anyone
who love good, relevant storytelling.”
The step team members say they hope that when the film hits theatres
it will impact the lives of kids in any situation where they feel they
might not make it.
Sums up Blessin Giraldo: “I want to show the world it doesn’t matter
where you come from—be it girls in urban areas, the suburbs or the
country, you can be whatever you want to be. But you have to be
willing to go after it. Nobody else can tell you who you are. So my main
message to the world would be: don’t let anybody dim your light. Be
genuine and true to yourself at all times.”
CHRIS MANN
IN “URBAN SONGBOOK: THE NEW STANDARD”
“Urban Songbook: The New Standard,” the brand new concert
from Chris Mann, is the product of what he loves most
about music–the classic, soaring melodies of the Great
American Songbook and the trap-beat rhythms of modern
urban production. Mann says, “If Justin Timberlake were
reinventing standards–that would be Urban Songbook.” Top
it off with original, Top 4o-ready singles and Broadway fan
favorites and you’ve got the recipe for a new standard.
You might know him from NBC’s The Voice, but that’s only one
chapter of the story. In 2012, the world finally got the chance
to meet Mann on his Faircraft/Republic Records debut, Roads,
a bold reimagining of the classical-pop genre. The aptly-titled
album represents the culmination of a long and challenging
journey for this gifted and dedicated young artist, who’d been
pushing forward against what had appeared to be overwhelming
odds. Now, he’s triumphed. The record hit #1 on Billboard’s
Heatseekers Chart and Top 5 on the Classical Chart. Meanwhile,
he played to sold out crowds across the U.S. in support of the
collection.
He followed up the album with his very first PBS concert DVD and CD,
Chris Mann In Concert: A Mann For All Seasons and appeared on PBS’
National Memorial Day Concert. During that unforgettable concert,
Chris performed on the West Lawn of the United States Capitol for an
audience of over 300,000 and millions of TV viewers to honor American
service men and women and their families.
He never forgets where he came from though. After studying opera
at Vanderbilt in Nashville, the Wichita, Kansas, native had spent years
singing in clubs and auditioning for record labels without a nibble, until
three years ago, when one classical label took a chance on him. Mann
was working on what would have been his debut album when he was
abruptly dropped, the victim of a wholesale regime change at the company.
Devastated, he started working behind the scenes as a session
singer on Glee, and occasionally getting on camera as a member of the
fictional vocal group the Warblers. He was making a decent living, and
for a while he managed to convince himself that it was what he should
be doing with his career.
After his breakout turn on The Voice, Mann signed with Faircraft. The
decision was a no-brainer for both Mann and label C.E.O. Ron Fair.
“Ron is a believer,” says Chris. “He has a passion for classical crossover
music—he gets it.” Together, they immediately began conceptualizing
of the album project—or projects, including a Wal-mart exclusive
Christmas EP.
“Always on My Mind” and Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” to “Ave
Maria” and Damien Rice’s “The Blowers’ Daughter,” with the latter
featuring a special guest appearance from Christina Aguilera.
About “The Blower’s Daughter” and singing with Chris, Aguilera says,
“It’s a beautiful song and I really respect the way he’s expressing
himself on the album. Everything from his tone, to his richness, to his
soulfulness comes through loud and clear.”
Mann co-wrote two songs, “Cuore,” based on Bach’s “Air on a G String,”
and the contemporary ballad “Falling.” A widescreen take on Coldplay’s
anthem “Viva La Vida”—which sounds like it was written expressly for
Mann to sing—provides the album with an ecstatic climax.
While Mann chose most of the material himself, it was Fair who
instigated what would become the album’s centerpiece, hooking up
with Paul Anka, who was so taken with Mann’s voice and story that he
reworked “My Way” specifically for Chris. Anka tweaked the lyrics so
that instead of being about a guy looking back, this new version is written
from the point of view of a young man looking hopefully ahead—a
notion central to the theme of Roads.
That Anka would, for the first time ever, massage this Frank Sinatra-associated
standard for him to sing meant a great deal to Mann, whose
late grandfather had himself once headed to L.A. in an attempt to make
it as a Sinatra-influenced crooner, only to shelve his dream, return to
Kansas and start a family. “I was raised on Sinatra by my granddad, so I
have a strong connection to him as I’m pursuing my own dream,” says
Mann in a particularly emotional moment. “If he’d known that I’d one
day be working with Paul Anka, and that I’d be recording the only other
official version of ‘My Way,’ I think he would be so proud and excited.”
About Mann’s take on the classic song, Anka says, “”It’s uniquely
special. [Chris has] now established a whole new level. [My Way] has a
whole new life to it. The arrangement is amazing.”
“‘My Way’ is the anchor of the album, but [lead single] ‘Roads’ is the
cloth from which I want everything to be cut,” he continues. “It was
given to me by Keith Thomas, who produced it, and I connected to it
immediately. The concept is about how life can throw you a curveball
or it can change everything overnight, but either way you have to stay
on this road and it will lead you home. That’s exactly how my road has
been—a marathon that’s brought me to this new beginning.”
Having realized one lifelong dream, Mann acknowledges there are
more dreams still unfulfilled. “I would love to sing on an ancient amphitheater
stage somewhere in Europe,” he says, “and I’ve always fantasized
about winning a Grammy. I can’t wait to see where this road I’ve
been on for so long leads me next.”
