LXXVIII.<br />

ONCE AND FOR EVER.<br />

X. 11. And every priest indeed standeth day by day ministering and<br />

<strong>of</strong>fering <strong>of</strong>tentimes the same sacrifices, the which can never take away sins :<br />

12. But he, when he had <strong>of</strong>fered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down<br />

on the right hand <strong>of</strong> God;<br />

13. From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made the footstool <strong>of</strong><br />

his feet.<br />

14. For by one <strong>of</strong>fering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.<br />

IN the last verses <strong>of</strong> chap, vii., where the eternal priesthood <strong>of</strong><br />

Jesus had been set forth, He was spoken <strong>of</strong> as one who needeth<br />

not daily to <strong>of</strong>fer, for this He did once for all, when He <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

up Himself a Son, perfected for evermore. And so in chap,<br />

ix., with its teaching <strong>of</strong> the efficacy <strong>of</strong> His blood, we had the<br />

thought repeated, Christ entered in once for all. Not that He<br />

should <strong>of</strong>fer Himself <strong>of</strong>ten, else must He have <strong>of</strong>ten suffered ;<br />

now once hath He been manifested ;<br />

Christ once <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

shall appear a second time. <strong>The</strong> contrast is put as strongly<br />

as possible between the sacrifices ever repeated, and the<br />

<strong>of</strong>fering <strong>of</strong> Christ once for all. So, too, in the beginning <strong>of</strong><br />

our chapter the impotence <strong>of</strong> the sacrifices year by year<br />

continually is proved from the fact, that the conscience once<br />

cleansed would need no new sacrifice; as a fact, they only<br />

renewed the remembrance <strong>of</strong> sins. And now, in the concluding<br />

summed up and pressed<br />

verses <strong>of</strong> the argument, the thought is<br />

home anew. <strong>The</strong> priest standeth day by day <strong>of</strong>fering <strong>of</strong>ten-
