JESUS TASTING DEATH FOR EVERT MAN.<br />

II. 9. We behold him who hath been made a little lower than the<br />

angels, even Jesus, because <strong>of</strong> the suffering <strong>of</strong> death crowned with glory<br />

and honour, that by the grace <strong>of</strong> God He should taste death for every man.<br />

HERE we have the one great reason why it was meet that<br />

Jesus should be made a little lower than the angels. It was<br />

that He might taste death for every man. In the counsel <strong>of</strong><br />

divine grace, and in the great plan <strong>of</strong> redemption, this was<br />

one <strong>of</strong> the first objects <strong>of</strong> the incarnation<br />

the birth was for the<br />

sake <strong>of</strong> the death. Without that wonderful birth, THE WORD,<br />

that was God, made flesh,<br />

us.<br />

the death would not have pr<strong>of</strong>ited<br />

Without that wonderful birth the death would have availed<br />

us little. What God hath joined together let no man put<br />

asunder. Let us beware <strong>of</strong> exalting the one at the expense<br />

<strong>of</strong> the other. <strong>The</strong> birth and the death are two inseparable<br />

parts <strong>of</strong> the one process by which He was perfected as the<br />

Firstborn from the dead, and became our Deliverer and King.<br />

<strong>The</strong> humanity and humiliation <strong>of</strong> Jesus was needful for His<br />

death for or on behalf <strong>of</strong> every man.<br />

And what was the meaning <strong>of</strong> this death? And wherein<br />

lies its efficacy ? In Scripture there is a tw<strong>of</strong>old aspect in which
