SENIOR READERS’ THEATER
The Firehouse Center for the Arts’
Senior Readers’ Theater presents
American master playwright and
Nobel laureate in Literature -
Eugene O’Neill. Senior Readers
(aged 55 and older) share a passion
for the magic of theater. Together,
they explore a script in detail,
develop a character, focus on the
use of voice and gestures, and finally
perform for the community! Senior
Readers’ Theater is performed seated
and not memorized. Proceeds to
benefit Our Neighbors’ Table -
“Hunger comes in many forms.
Since 1992, Our Neighbors’ Table
has been committed to establishing
a community that provides for the
whole person with nourishing food,
kindness, and dignity.” Sunday,
AMESBURY LIBRARY
PRESENTATION
This month the Amesbury
Public Library presents Bill Gerber,
Canals of the Merrimack. This
presentation provides an overview
of the Merrimack River as an artery
of transportation, and show and
describes what remains of the system
today. Before they were adapted
to power New England mills, the
falls and rapids of the Merrimack
River were serious obstructions to
travel. These impediments, and the
absence of good roads, drove more
than a decade of efforts to improve
river navigability. Between 1792 and
1848, nine companies constructed
13 canals, incorporating 36 locks,
along the main river channel
between Concord NH and the
sea or, via the Middlesex Canal, to
Boston. Lesser improvements were
made by a few of these companies
at several more rapids. Additional
canals were built by still other firms
near the mouths of the Nashua and
Piscataquog Rivers, and possibly at
one or more industrial sites. The
program is on Monday, October 30
at 1:00. Registration is required.
“CRIMINAL JUSTICE
REFORMS” WITH SHERIFF
KEVIN COPPINGER
Essex County Sheriff Kevin
Coppinger will speak on the role
of prison policy and programs
in the criminal justice reform
initiatives now being discussed
on Beacon Hill. There are a dozen
or more bills still making their
way through the Massachusetts
legislature to provide alternatives
to incarceration, and to improve
the services that prepare inmates
to return to their communities and
become productive citizens. The
cost to keep one adult in prison is
nearly $50,000/year. The savings
from shorter sentences and more
programs are significant. Wednesday,
November 1, 2017, 7pm. At the
First Religious Society, Unitarian
