Cold weather, eggnog, and three-part harmonies
make for the best Christmas recipe.
The most important ingredient is the one
least practiced: caroling. Friends and families
purchase matching sweaters, parade
through the streets and practice a timeless
tradition that we think all college students
should partake in. Christmas caroling can
be especially merry if you plan ahead.
With some advice from my colleagues, I
have narrowed down some caroling criteria.
While celebrities make it look easy, bells
won’t be the only thing jingling if you
choose to carol through a “hilly” neighborhood.
When you choose a neighborhood to
go caroling in, choose one that will be less
of a hike and more of a stroll. Neighborhoods
like Berry Forest and Stonebridge
are prime examples. The lack of hills will
let you belt Mariah Carey’s solo like it’s
your own.
Some of the best places to carol are
nursing homes and apartment buildings
because they have more people per street.
Nursing homes especially, are always
looking for ways to entertain their residents
who find joy in embarrassing college
students. Mercy Care Rome, right next to
Barron Stadium, would be a great place to
consider caroling.
If you are looking for the perfect opportunity
to ask your employer for a raise, try
caroling in The Battle Farm, a subdivision
off of U.S. Highway 27, as it is a very
popular spot during Halloween and other
holidays. “We had carolers two or so years
ago, but they haven’t been back,”said Sue
Tarpley, career center director. Rather
than being a grinch this year, grab a friend
and spread some cheer.
