On Monday, September 18 a group of 39 students and
staff made their way to Florida – but for the first time in
GCA’s history, this Florida trip was not for fun at the beaches
or amusements parks. This group was headed to Ft. Myers to
assist those who suffered damage to their homes when Irma
hit their area as a category 3 hurricane on September 10.
They braved the heat, and tolerated the stench of sewage
which had flooded the area, to clear debris from yards, remove
drywall and to pull damaged contents from houses to the street.
They also helped distribute water, food and supplies.
Also a first since the year 2000, GCA will not be sending a
group to Appalachia for a mission trip. According to Chaplain
Josh Woods, “With the urgent needs in Florida and Texas so
great this year we felt that is where we should be, but we plan
to return to Appalachia in 2018.”
