v-ball
From Page 31
“They’re aggressive all
around,” New Trier’s Maggie
Bodman said. “Their
offense is insane and they
run a variety of things.
They’re really scrappy and
a really good team.”
In an odd twist, the second
set mirrored the first,
almost exactly. It featured
12 ties again and had longer
rallies.
With the Tigers up 22-
20, it looked as if the Trevians
had drawn back to
one when a ball bumped
over by libero Julia Maisel
dropped in the middle of
the Central side, but a Trevian
was called for having
a part of their body under
the net, giving the Tigers
the point and a 23-20 lead,
one New Trier wouldn’t
recover from.
Hsieh had said in the
past that coming into the
playoffs she had seen a
path for her team to get
downstate, but did she see
a season like this?
“We started off the season
strong, we didn’t drop
a set for the first 11 matches,”
the coach said. “From
then on, I think we went
to every three-set match
possible but that prepared
them for the fight and being
able to come back
from behind.”
Maddie McGregor and
Gillian Klise led the team
with five kills each, while
Taite Ryan added three.
Maisel had 14 digs and
Payton Hielscher had 13
assists.
The 2018 edition of the
Trevians looks to be even
stronger, as it returns starters
Hielscher, McGregor,
Klise, Ryan, Bodman
and Grace Bozzo, all of
whom other than Bodman
will be seniors, as well
as some younger players
who saw some time
in the regular season and
playoffs in Grace Magner,
LuLu McShane and
Katie Merk.
“This (supersectional)
definitely shows us what
we can do,” Bodman said.
“This shows how far we
can go, what our limits are
and gives us confidence
going into next year.”
10 Questions
with Galen Quinn
The New Trier senior is
a member of the Trevians
rowing team.
Do you have any
superstitions before,
during or after a
meet?
We do this thing called
passing the rock, where
we give a knuckle bump
going down the boat.
We’ve always done that.
If you could travel
anywhere in the
world, where would it
be and why?
Japan because I have not
been there but I’ve seen
plenty of cool videos on
it and seems like it’d be a
cool location.
What’s the hardest
part about rowing?
It’s not the most exciting
sport and gets kind of
boring sometimes so you
have to endure. The mindset
is the hardest part.
What’s the best part
about being a New
Trier athlete?
The team offers a lot of
camaraderie. It’s a good
place to go, no matter if
you had a good day or a
bad day. It’s a good constant
in your life.
What’s been your
favorite moment at
New Trier?
This year when I got
third place at Head of
the Charles, a huge meet.
After the meet, we were
really surprised and it felt
like a good race.
What’s one item on
your bucket list?
To travel the world but
also to create a business
I’m really passionate
about.
What’s one thing
people don’t know
about you?
I started a company, an
app development company.
It’s called Bitbybite
Inc.
What’s the best
Photo Submitted
coaching advice you’ve
gotten and from who?
Coach (Jack) Rusher, he
told us to think that every
stroke is our last.
If you could play
another sport, what
would it be and why?
I would play volleyball. I
used to play but I love the
dynamic and something
different than rowing.
What’s your favorite
restaurant on the
North Shore?
Walker Bros. I get a Santa
Fe omelette with pico de
gallo and hash browns.
