She created Pedal Power, an organization that collects used bikes and donates them to Chicagoland schools. The New Trier senior will be standing outside McKenzie Elementary to collect bikes on Saturday, Nov. 11, for the last time before she heads off to college next fall. Basil’s story begins 10 years ago, when at the young age of 8, she faced the tough task of giving away her outgrown bike. Saddened by the thought, she came up with a solution to ease her woes. “I thought ‘what if my bike could go to someone who really needed it, and loved it as much as I have,’” she said. This incident sparked the creation of Pedal Power, and since then, more than 3,000 bikes have been collected and donated. The two main recipients are the students of Cesar Chavez Multicultural Academic Center, where bikes are used as a reward for those who make honor roll, and North Side Learning Prep, where students with significant intellectual disabilities use old bike parts as instructional tools. Running Pedal Power has helped Basil hone business skills at an early age. She has fearlessly cold-called businesses, securing sponsorships along the way. Photo submitted she even struck a deal with Home Depot Evanston, who agreed to become a year-long donation site. Most recently, Basil has partnered with Divvy Bikes, who will help with publicity and the transportation of donated bikes. In addition, Pedal Power has expanded, adding two new collection sites in Libertyville and Elmhurst. “Creating Pedal Power has been such a wonderful experience,” Basil said. “I’ve learned basic organization and communications skills, and how to be persistent. The best part has been watching Pedal Power become successful; it’s truly an amazing feeling.“ While Basil’s run here in Wilmette may be coming to an end, Pedal Power will persevere. “I’m considering starting a similar initiative wherever I end up for college, and hope to pursue a career as an engineer and use those skills to continue to make a difference in the lives of others,” she said. Locally, she has enlisted family friends in Elmhurst to keep Pedal Power alive, and will pass the torch to 5th fifth-grader Meg Erickson, who will take over in Wilmette. “I used to babysit [Meg] and she was always very interested in Pedal Power,” Basil said. “When she asked if she could help when I moved on to college, I knew all would be well. Meg is super perceptive of others and how they’re feeling. She also asks such great questions and loves to talk to people. Also, the fact that she asked if she could get involved at such a young age showed a lot of strength and character and I really liked that. Henry Freelance Reporter Veteran bridge players Don Joseph, of Glencoe, and Norm Rosenstein, of Winnetka, will be competing in the American Contract Bridge League’s North American Open Pairs Championship next March in Philadelphia. The championship will pit the winners of qualifying duplicate bridge tournaments in the ACBL’s 26 regional districts against each other. Joseph and Rosenstein won the District 13, Flight B tournament in September against 29 other pairs. They will faceoff against up to 103 pairs from around the country. Both men are Ruby Life Masters, meaning they each have more than 1,500 masterpoints, which is the coin of the realm for serious bridge players and the payoff for national championship winners. “We fight for masterpoints,” Joseph said. Joseph, 74, was president of Northbrook Consulting, which helped small businesses use information technology more efficiently. He is currently a volunteer with Executive Service Corps, advising not-forprofits. Rosenstein, 71, was in mergers and acquisitions, and is now teaching quantitative analysis at DePaul University. Joseph and Rosenstein are part of a group of about 25 duplicate bridge players that have been playing every Tuesday night for more than 20 years. Though they have occasionally paired up during that time, they only seriously began playing as partners earlier this year, in preparation for the district tournament in Milwaukee in September. “We get along very well,” said Joseph, who began learning how to play bridge “at my mother’s knee.” Rosenstein agrees. “Part of it is, you will see some people who always yell at each other. My philosophy is, I’ve never seen a person play better because they were yelled at,” Rosenstein added. “If we make a mistake, we are harder on ourselves than each other, but we will talk about it afterwards.” Indeed, bridge is all about communication, both the verbal variety after a game and the silent sort during it. “You are not allowed to communicate with gestures or comments. You must develop this conversation strictly by the bids you make and the cards you play,” Joseph said. “When you think about it, there are 37 bids. It is not a secret code, but it is a code,” Rosenstein said. “How you use those 37 bids you can communicate hundreds and hundreds of hands, by skipping a bid or not skipping a level, by doing it in combination, and that communication interests me.” He offers the following example: “I open with two diamonds. It means I have 11-15 high card points, and specifically five hearts and four spades. If he bids two no trump, he is asking me for further description of my hand. Joseph and Rosenstein like to play “two over one with a lot of gadgets.” They play many, many more conventions, as well, such as flannery, ogust, support doubles, new minor forcing, suction and michaels. “You have to learn the conventions and the follow-ups,” Joseph said. “A lot of people learn a piece of the convention and then don’t understand what the follow-ups are.” To prepare for the upcoming championship, the pair plans to keep on playing together regularly. They will also both be reading a booklet Joseph just gave Rosenstein. “It is general understandings that are deeper than the conventions themselves,” Rosenstein said. It helped him stay sharp, because you have to memorize very single card that comes down.
