4 | November 9, 2017 | The glencoe anchor news glencoeanchor.com ‘Community over competition’ New Flower Shop owner integrates business more into Village of Glencoe Megan Bernard, Editor It’s not all about the money for the new owner of The Flower Shop in Glencoe. “That’s not about why I bought this place,” Brooke Lawler said. “I’m really passionate about what I do. I really love it. I really want to promote local businesses through this.” With the change in ownership in September, Lawler is breathing new life into The Flower Shop, which first opened in 1981 in the downtown Glencoe business district. The previous owner, Walter Radloff, a Winnetka native, bought the store in 1997 from the late North Shore florist Robert Livermore, after it had already been around for about two decades. “It’s been a Glencoe staple,” Lawler said. “We have done really well. We have an amazing clientele that has kept us going throughout the years.” Lawler managed the store under Radloff for nine years and also served as the head designer. When he decided to retire, it was her time to step up. “[Radloff] decided he wanted to retire, and I decided I wanted a flower Deciding to file for DIVORCE is hard... I knew going into this that when he retired, I would want to own this place.” Now as the third Flower Shop owner, Lawler said her plan moving forward is to make it more of a local, community-based place. “We are becoming more involved in Glencoe itself,” she said. “We are working on community over competition.” To do so, Lawler hosted The Flower Shop’s firstever Halloween party — Lawler’s favorite holiday and wedding anniversary — on Oct. 28. The event served as a new owner open house with drinks, The Law Offices of Michael P. Doman, Ltd. Practicing Divorce Law for 29 years. The Flower Shop is also starting to sell locallymade, hand-crafted art, including wreaths and crocheted dolls, among other merchandise. “I’m just trying to give people an outlet to sell their stuff who wouldn’t have a normal storefront to do it,” Lawler said. “It helps me out a little bit too to get going.” Since September, the shop has been bustling around Halloween and now preparing for the holiday season. As the days have become blended together, Lawler said it hasn’t hit her yet that she’s the owner. “I walk in here and I always expect to see the old owner standing in here,” she said. “I haven’t had enough time for it to sink in yet.” Owner Brooke Lawler (left) poses with her wife Christine Calhoun in front of her store during their inaugural Halloween event. Photo Submitted “But when I write the checks to pay the bills, that’s when it has felt like it’s mine,” she added, laughing. In all, Lawler got her start in the field — literally — when she was working for a retail native nursery center in St. Charles. Her boss asked her to find and arrange flowers and plants for an arrangement for their work party. After gathering what she could in the acres of native plants, Lawler’s boss became wide-eyed and told her she was in the wrong position. After that, she started working as a florist and designer in several different shops before landing in Glencoe. The Flower Shop in Glencoe has a full range of locally-grown flowers and also offers event design, coordinating and planning, and access to lighting and caterers. The business also offers seasonal planting subscriptions four times a year. In the future, Lawler plans to host flower workshops and painting classes for the community.
