Our Jewish Community Center
November 2017
Dear Friends,
We at the Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community Center have
a lot to be thankful for. A wonderful community where
we live and work. Awesome members and families whom
we serve. And excellent, caring employees and board
members. We count our blessings every day because
earlier this year we went through some pretty challenging
times.
During the waves of threats made against many Jewish
organizations at the start of this year, our campus was
targeted three times.
Thankfully, the threats were
not credible and no one
was harmed. However, our
bottom line was bruised as
several families left our childcare programs. But we did
not let this diminish our spirit or our commitment to the
community.
Happy is he who performs a good deed:
for he may tip the scales for himself and
the world.
– Talmud, Kiddushin
We came out swinging, figuratively, and clawed our way
back to some sort of normalcy. The financials slowly
started to come around. We ended the school year still
a bit wary but happy with our progress. Our summer
camp season was excellent, which further boosted our
confidence and determination. And after completing
our new secure lobby entrance this fall, we feel like we’ve
come full circle with our enhanced safety and security
measures.
I care about the Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community Center of Syracuse and its future. I also identify with and understand
the importance of the JCC to Jewish life in this community. I would like to make the following contribution*:
q Pillar $1,000
q Founder $500
q Supporter $250
q Patron $100
Which brings us to where we are now. As the end of this
year rapidly approaches, we are grateful for everyone
in our community who has stood with us through such
trying times. Despite the uncertainty, we continued
to support hundreds of local working families with
quality childcare and area seniors with our kosher meal
program. Your past contributions to our end-of-year
campaign have enabled us to meet the needs of our
members and neighbors. We once again look to your
generosity as we seek to maintain our key place within
the community. Please remember that when you give to
the JCC you provide a gift that will last throughout the
year.
Help us continue our long tradition of serving the
diverse needs of those in our community. Your generous
donation will positively impact many lives. Please make
a tax-deductible contribution to the JCC today. Your
end-of-year gift will help ensure that our essential
programming and services continue moving forward
throughout the coming year.
Sincerely,
Supporting Your Center
Your continued financial
contributions, gifts, grants and
endowments allow us to serve
you, your family and the larger
community six days per week,
year round. Funds raised are
critical to daily operations, special
programming, future development
and improvements, and
scholarships and financial aid.
Matching gifts
Many companies in the Syracuse area have
matching gift programs, which encourage
charitable giving by their employees.
Under these programs, companies match
gifts—often dollar for dollar or even two
dollars to one—that individuals make to
nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations. Your
gift to the JCC may qualify. Please check
with your company to determine eligibility
requirements.
Tribute cards
To commemorate special occasions,
including births, birthdays, graduations,
anniversaries, marriages, Bar or Bat
Mitzvah, or to celebrate and honor the
memory of a loved one, the JCC welcomes
tax-deductible gifts to one of our many
endowment or special funds. (See the
tributes on page 34.) The JCC will
send an acknowledgement card to the
individual (or next of kin) in whose name
the contribution is made. Tribute cards
recognize someone special and help the
JCC. For more information, contact Erin
Hart at 315-445-2040, ext. 112.
End-of-Year Donation
Designate your United Way
donation to support the JCC
If you participate in the United Way
Community Campaign where you work
or as an individual donor, please consider
designating all or part of your gift to the
JCC of Syracuse. This can easily be done
on the back of your pledge card. Your
generous contribution to the JCC through
the United Way donor program will go a
long way in supporting your JCC.
Volunteer
An agency such as the JCC is dependent
on the enthusiasm and willingness of
members of the community who volunteer
their time and talent. Volunteers are
invaluable in bringing vital perspective,
experience, community and manpower to
complement those of our staff members.
Public support is imperative to the JCC of Syracuse’s survival. The center depends
on these donations for a full 7% of its annual budget. We recently mailed out
our end-of-year campaign letters
requesting your generous support.
For your convenience, a copy of this
letter is reprinted on page 3 along
with the form to use for making a taxdeductible
end-of-year contribution if
you haven’t already done so. No gift
is too small and all donations to the
JCC are greatly appreciated!
Jewish Federation of CNY
The JCC of Syracuse is a beneficiary
agency of the Jewish Federation of
Central New York. The JCC receives
funding from the Federation and
works in close partnership with it to
provide the Jewish community with
essential programs and services.
JCC families and members can help
by giving generously to the Jewish
Federation of CNY campaign.
Senior Adult Dining Program
Our Bobbi Epstein Lewis Senior Adult
Dining Program (see page 25) offers
seniors a hot, nutritious kosher meal
five days a week at a very affordable
price. It’s our way of “giving back” to
local seniors who form the foundation
of our community. You can help
keep this valuable program going by
making a contribution or becoming a
sponsor of our monthly senior newsletter.
PJ Library in CNY gives back
PJ makes a difference! When our country
was struck by natural disasters in
September, PJ Library started a Hurricane
Harvey book drive to send books to those
families and institutions affected by
Harvey in Houston, Texas. This book drive
took place in communities throughout the
country, and Syracuse also participated via
PJ Library in CNY, a program of the JCC
of Syracuse.
In one week’s time, local
residents donated over 300
of their old PJ books to
PJ Library in CNY. Those
books were then sorted
by age and content and
divided into packages of
12 books per age group.
Syracuse sent 288 books
to Houston, which was the
equivalent of a year’s supply
of books for 24 different
children! With the help of
PJ communities throughout
the country, Houston has
received enough books
for at least 75 children in every age range
(6 months to 8 years old) to receive a
year’s supply of books. These books are
intended to replace books that families
and institutions lost in the flooding of
Hurricane Harvey.
Thank you to everyone locally who
contributed books for such a wonderful
cause! We are always collecting extra PJ
Library books, so if you are interested in
donating your books for future needs,
please contact Carolyn Weinberg at
pjcny@jccsyr.org.
UPCOMING EVENTS...
On Dec. 10 from 2–3 p.m. we will be
having a special “Build a Bear Donation
Party.” Families are asked to purchase
bears in advance that will then be
completed at Build a Bear in Destiny USA
and donated to children at Gollisano
Children’s hospital.
Look for details coming
soon on a January Tu
B’shevat planting party!
For more information
about any of the upcoming
PJ Library in CNY events,
please contact Carolyn at
PJ Library (PJ for pajamas)
is a nationally acclaimed
literacy program started by the
Harold Grinspoon Foundation
that gives free Jewish bedtime
stories, CDs and DVDs
to families raising Jewish
children. The PJ Library in
CNY chapter is a program of the JCC of Syracuse
and supported by the Pomeranz, Shankman
and Martin Charitable Foundation, Jewish
Federation of Central New York, Congregation
Beth Sholom-Chevra Shas, Shaarei Torah
Orthodox Congregation of Syracuse, Syracuse
Hebrew Day School, Temple Adath Yeshurun
and Temple Concord. The PJ Library in CNY
serves children from 6 months to 8 years old
in Cortland, Madison, Onondaga and Oswego
Counties.
JCC accepts SilverSneakers and Silver&Fit programs
Let your light
shine for all
By Rabbi Daniel Fellman
Short days and long nights, cold weather
and slippery roads—all are a part of the
beauty of winter in Central New York.
But look a little closer and you will see
light and joy, warmth, smiles and hope too.
Winter has its challenges, but it also has
more than its share of blessings.
We Jews gather at the darkest time of the
year to light the Chanukah candles. The
lights glow with joy and beauty, reminding
us of challenges faced and overcome. And
the lights beckon us to do more, to reach
out, to connect with others.
Chanukah celebrates the victory of a small
band of Jews over a much larger foe. But
the holiday celebrates much more than
that historical occurrence.
Chanukah calls us to support those who
are facing challenges. Chanukah calls us to
reach out and interact with each other,
celebrating survival and the freedom
to believe and practice as we see fit.
Chanukah calls us to join together with
others, to see that the real beauty of the
light shines most brightly when it shows
people trading darkness and isolation for
light and connection.
The JCC is one such place to experience
the light and joy we need on short winter
days. Look through the pages of this book
and see all that is possible. Then make a
choice to be a part of it all, and shine your
light with all of us!
Did you know that if you have a certain type of
health insurance plan, you can workout at the
JCC for little or no cost? The JCC’s Neulander
Family Sports & Fitness Center
is a participating gym in both
the SilverSneakers and Silver&Fit
programs for seniors.
SilverSneakers is an insurance
benefit included in more than
65 Medicare health plans. Many
health plans from companies
such as Humana, Aetna, MVP, UnitedHealthcare
and others, as well as group retirement
plans, provide SilverSneakers gym memberships
to their insureds, at no additional cost.
HOW YOUNG CHILDREN LEARN
Much of what children learn and do in
an early childhood program doesn’t come
home in a backpack. Young children
learn best through hands-on and direct
interactive experiences. This type of
learning happens through play and
exploration.
The Jerome and Phyllis Charney Early
Childhood Development Program uses the
Creative Curriculum paired with the NYS
Early Learning Guidelines, using a Reggio
Emilia inspired approach to learning.
The Reggio Emilia Approach is an
innovative and inspiring approach to
early childhood education which values
the child as strong, capable, resilient and
rich with wonder and knowledge. Every
child brings with them deep curiosity and
potential, and this innate curiosity drives
their interest to understand their world
and their place within it.
REGGIO-INSPIRED
CREATIVE CURRICULUM
The Reggio-inspired Creative
Curriculum for infants, toddlers
and twos
There is an emphasis on the following
routines and experiences:
Routines
• Hellos & goodbyes
• Diapering & toileting
• Eating & mealtimes
• Sleeping & naptimes
• Getting dressed
Experiences
• Playing with toys
• Enjoying songs & stories
• Imitating & pretending
• Connecting with music & movement
• Creating with art
• Tasting & preparing food
• Exploring sand & water
• Going outdoors
The Reggio-inspired Creative
Curriculum for preschoolers
There is an emphasis on the following
experiences and the teachers intentionally
tie in math, literacy, social studies and
science.
• Dramatic play
• Blocks
• Art
• Sensory experiences
• Read aloud
• Cooking
• Music & movement
• Outdoors
HAPPY CHANUKAH
December brings with it Chanukah, the
“Festival of Lights,” and our classroom
Chanukah parties that have become a
favorite ECDP tradition! Our Chanukah
parties will be held on Friday, Dec. 15
for rooms 2, 7, 8, A and B. The boys and
girls will be eating potato lakes and jelly
doughnuts. Songs will be sung, dreidels
will be spun, candles on the menorah will
be lit and stories of brave Maccabees told.
Each child will also receive a specially
decorated goodie bag filled with a dreidel,
Chanukah stickers and chocolate gelt to
take home.
If your child will not be scheduled to
attend our Dec. 15 Chanukah Party, you
may pay for extra time if space is available.
Otherwise, parents may bring in their child
and STAY WITH THEM for the duration
of the party. NYS licensing regulations
requires a specific student/teacher ratio be
maintained at all times in every classroom.
Ratios vary according to age. Thank you
for your understanding and cooperation
with this matter.
WINTER VACATION CAMP
The Early Childhood Development
Program will be closed Dec. 26–29 for
winter break. There will be a vacation
camp offered Dec. 26–29 for our working
parents who need extended-day and fullday
childcare. The teachers who will be
caring for children that week may NOT be
your child’s regular teachers.
The winter vacation camp is subject to
minimum enrollment. The fee is $50 per
day. Please look for the registration form
in your child’s mailbox. We cannot accept
registration forms after Dec. 12 due to staff
scheduling.
PRESCHOOL BOOK FAIR
You’re invited! We look forward to seeing
you at our annual Scholastic Preschool
Book Fair which will be held Jan. 22–26
from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the JCC’s Early
Childhood wing.
Our book fair is the perfect way to
update your home library at half the cost!
Many of our parents love to purchase
books for their child’s classroom. To make
this easier for you, please look for the
specially marked book bins at the checkout
which contains the wish list of books
for classroom libraries. Your child will
be able to place a special sticker inside
the book that lets the teacher know who
purchased it for the classroom. Please note
that purchasing a book from the wish bin
is optional and not required. The Early
Childhood Development Program greatly
appreciates all wish bin books that are
purchased.
Longtime JCC exercise instructor retires
On Monday, Oct. 23, Donna Lipton taught
her last group exercise class at the JCC
of Syracuse’s Neulander Family Sports &
Fitness Center. She has been a volunteer
and teaching a class for seniors at the JCC
for the past 15 years. Although the 81-year
old Lipton, a self-professed “exercise
addict,” said that now is the time for her
to retire from teaching at the JCC, she still
plans on staying active.
“I will continue working out here at
the JCC,” said Lipton. “I take Tai Chi and
other classes here. The people are just
wonderful. I’ve made so many friends. I
just love the people.”
Lipton began volunteering at the JCC
as an instructor with Onondaga County’s
Fit for the Next Fifty exercise program.
Back then the county held their free classes
at the JCC. After the classes relocated to
another venue, the JCC continued to offer
a free seniors class every Monday morning
which Lipton continued to teach.
Even before she began volunteering
at the JCC, Lipton taught exercise classes
at the Manlius
Senior Center,
and has
continued
teaching there
all these years.
She has been
committed to
staying fit for a
long time.
“When I was
in my thirties I
started taking
aerobics to be
more physically
fit,” said Lipton.
“I got inspired
so I started lifting weights, and I’ve been
active ever since.”
At the end of her final class at the JCC,
Lipton’s many students in attendance
wished her well on this next chapter she’s
embarking on.
“Donna has truly been remarkable all
these years—giving so much of herself to
After volunteering at the JCC for the past 15 years, Donna Lipton, pictured at the
front of the class facing the camera, teaches her last Senior Strength & Balance
class at the JCC on Oct. 23.
the JCC and to her students,” said Paula
Pacini, JCC group exercise coordinator.
“She’s been an inspiration and will be
missed. Although we’re lucky that we’ll
still be able to see her working out here at
the JCC.”
