Deondre Cooper is a senior
at Lockport Township and
is a forward on the boys
basketball team.
How do you think the
team will do this upcoming
season?
I feel like we’re ready.
We’re coming out with a
better chemistry, we’re playing
faster and smarter.
What opponent do you
look forward to playing
the most this season?
Bolingbrook [which finished
3rd in the state in Class
4A last season]. Last year, in
our Porters vs. Cancer Game,
we played them at home [on
Feb. 3] and only lost by six
(55-49) when they were undefeated
and ranked No. 1
in the state. I look forward
to playing all opponents, but
especially them.
How did you get involved
playing basketball?
My older brother Jaylandt
Gilmer used to play here and
graduated in 2014. So I used
to come to a lot of his games
and I played in junior high
at Fairmont. But seeing him
and all his friends around
made me want to play too.
Do you play any other
sports?
Not anymore. My freshman
and sophomore years
I was in track and field. I
did the high jump and triple
jump there. But the last two
years I’ve just concentrated
on basketball.
What is it about the
game of basketball that
makes it the sport for
you?
I love competition and I
think basketball brings out
the highest competition level.
Unlike some other sports,
there’s no break. When
you’re out there, you’re always
competing.
Do you wish there were
games scheduled this
year at the old gym at
Lockport Central?
Yes, it’s like magical
there. So many great Lockport
teams played there and I
love the atmosphere. It’s really
loud there.
How aware is the team
of the program’s “uncommon”
history?
When we have our first
official team meeting, coach
Hespell tells us the team history.
He tells us how we’ve
had a basketball program
since 1906 and he lets us
know the highlights [and]
that the program has over
1,500 wins.

What else have you
learned from
coach Hespell?
I’ve learned a lot. But especially
how to be a family
man. He just had a new baby
and he took care of his family
while still being a coach.
I’ve also learned how to talk
to people and communicate
better because of him.
Do you plan to play
basketball in college?
Yes. My cousin - Patrick
Cooper [who graduated
from Lockport in 2017] is
now playing football at
Millikin University. So I’m
looking to maybe play basketball
there or also at either
Carthage College or DePaul.
What’s the best thing
about being an athlete
at Lockport?
The ability to have the
Porter name on you. Just being
able to be a Porter athlete
and representing the school.
