ROMAN INSTime
I During the first semester, I had a
special opportunity to be an
intern/research assistant at the
Truman Institute for the
Advancement of World Peace. I
worked for Dr. Edy Kaufman,
the executive director, on a
project dealing w ith the Jewish
“desaparecidos” or missing
persons, victimized during the
| m ilitary regime in Argentina
from 1976-1983.
I must say that the internship,
! along w ith 24 hours of regular
classes, made my schedule quite
busy but I got a great deal out of
it. Working w ith Dr. Kaufm an
was a delight.
He’s a very interesting m an w ith many contacts
worldwide. On one occasion, I walked into his room
and, in Hebrew, asked a man w aiting inside where Dr,
Kaufm an was. All Dan Rather could say in Hebrew
was “Lo”. On another occasion I met Jimmy Carter
on his way to a meeting at the Truman Institute. He
stopped and asked me if I wanted to take his picture.
His bodyguards, Israeli and American, were shocked
and thought we knew each other! It was an exciting
moment. Overall, the internship was extremely
worthwhile and stimulating.
CHUG
mmu
A liyah was our common interest and what
brought us together every week. Our chug was
made up of twenty people who wanted to find
out and be exposed to as much as possible
about Aliyah; the bureaucracy involved, the
psychological ups and downs, the rules, the
process, job opportunities and most
important... o u r rig h ts! We had some great
lecturers from places like the AACI
(Americans and Canadians in Israel) - an
institute which is heaven to an Oleh Chadash.
Speaking to a group of arm y officers was also
an experience th at was unique to us all.
Having an opportunity to exchange our
thoughts about Israel and her society, to
discuss our future plans and reasons why we
w ant to be here “Bichlal” was, in my opinion,
the best part of the chug. Personally, it gave
me a lot to think about and brought to mind
many questions that will remain w ith me from
now, as a member of Chug Aliyah until....I, one
day, am an olah chadasha, a member of the
Israeli society.
