DAVID Z. CHESNOFF
2024 Scopus Award Honoree
“I’ve always appreciated the history of the University and the people who founded it.
They made the University what it is today, a world-class institution that produces fantastic discoveries in the sciences,
medicine, and computers. But I think HU’s work in the humanities is essential, too. In a country that has seen so many successes
in scientific research and innovation, the humanities help to ground Israel in its tradition of democracy, Jewish learning,
and education in general. It’s a very important component of Israel’s success.”
David Z. Chesnoff has been practicing criminal law in Las Vegas, Nevada for the last 40 years. During that time, he has built
a national practice, representing high profile clients from the business, entertainment and national and international
community. Some of the practice’s clients have included Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Mike Tyson, Bruno Mars, and Suge
Knight, to name a few. He has appeared in federal and state courts in over 30 of the 50 states.
David graduated cum laude from Alfred University in 1976 and went on to graduate from Suffolk University Law School in
1979, where he was recently awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree. He is licensed to practice in Texas and Nevada, and
is active in numerous legal associations including the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Nevada Criminal
Lawyers Association, and the American Board of Criminal Lawyers. His firm, Chesnoff & Schonfeld, maintains the highest rating
available from Martindale-Hubbell (AV), and the firm is consistently listed as one of the top law firms in the United States.
He has worked as a legal analyst on ABC and he has been featured on other television shows including The Dick Cavett Show,
The Charlie Rose Show, Larry King Show, A&E’s American Justice, Nancy Grace, 48 Hours, Forensic Files and City Confidential.
David is a lifelong supporter of the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces, American Friends of the Hebrew University, and
Chabad of Southern Nevada. He is also a Foundation Board member of the Boys & Girls Club of Southern Nevada and has
sponsored local high school sports, little league, and various volleyball clubs in the Las Vegas Valley. He has also supported
Keep Memory Alive, Shade Tree, and Make a Wish Foundations.
David has been married to his wife Diana for nearly 40 years.

AUDRA MCDONALD
Audra McDonald is unparalleled in the breadth and versatility of her artistry as both a
singer and an actor. The winner of a record-breaking six Tony Awards, two Grammy
Awards and an Emmy, in 2015 she received the National Medal of Arts from President
Barack Obama and was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people.
She won Tonys for her performances in Carousel, Master Class, Ragtime, A Raisin in the
Sun, The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess and Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill, which also
served as the vehicle for her Olivier-nominated 2017 West End debut. On television,
McDonald won an Emmy as the official host of PBS’s Live From Lincoln Center, and is
known for recurring roles on Private Practice (ABC), The Good Wife (CBS), The Good
Fight (Paramount+) and The Gilded Age (HBO). Her film credits include Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast and MGM’s 2021
Aretha Franklin biopic, Respect. A Juilliard-trained soprano, McDonald maintains a major career as a Grammy-winning recording
and concert artist. Her latest solo album, Sing Happy, was recorded live with the New York Philharmonic for Decca Gold. She is a
founding member of Black Theatre United, board member of Covenant House International, and prominent advocate for LGBTQIA+
rights, whose favorite roles are those performed offstage, as an activist, wife to actor Will Swenson, and mother.
JEFF ROSS
Jeff Ross is a well-known comedian, writer, actor, director, and producer, often referred to
as “The Roastmaster General.” As a staple on the Comedy Central Roasts, Jeff has
anchored the roasts of the industry’s most famous people including Justin Bieber, Alec
Baldwin, and former President Donald Trump. He has worked on various television
projects such as Bumping Mics with Dave Attell and Historical Roasts for Netflix. Jeff
continues to tour the country doing stand-up and bringing his own brand of speed-roasting
to audiences both stateside and abroad.
ABOUT THE HEBREW UNIVERSITY OF JERUSALEM
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is one of the world’s most distinguished
academic and research institutions. The University is located in Israel, but its
work transforms our global landscape. Its students, faculty, and alumni have
won eight Nobel Prizes, developed treatments for diseases, and ignited
innovation that has led to more than 10,750 patents. Distinguished alumni
include Israeli Prime Ministers, two female Supreme Court Presidents, as well
as 25% of Knesset members, and two-thirds of Israel’s Supreme Court
Justices. For over nine decades, Israel has relied on HU for leadership in every
sphere and for its unwavering and unparalleled commitment to excellence,
multiculturalism, pluralism, and the cause of peace. We think our founding
fathers, Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, Chaim Weizmann, and Martin Buber
would be quite proud.
