TORCH of LEARNING AWARD
The George A. Katz Torch of Learning Award is presented annually to a distinguished
member or members of the legal community in recognition of outstanding leadership,
professional achievement and commitment to civic and social causes. The award is
conferred upon exemplary individuals who uphold the ideals embodied by the late
George A. Katz. A co-founder of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, George was a
renowned philanthropic leader and longstanding supporter of the Hebrew University,
along with his wife, Frances R. Katz, a member of AFHU’s National Board of
Directors.

ROBERTA (“ROBBIE”) KAPLAN founded
Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP in July 2017, seeking
to build what she calls a “new fashioned, old
fashioned” law firm that combines a cuttingedge
civil and criminal litigation practice with a
groundbreaking commitment to using the courts to
serve the public interest. Robbie is best known for
successfully arguing before the U.S. Supreme Court
on behalf of her client Edith Windsor in United
States v. Windsor, the landmark case in which the
Supreme Court ruled that a key provision of the
Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that barred
legally married same-sex couples from enjoying the benefits of marriage was
unconstitutional.

One of Kaplan Hecker’s first cases was Sines v. Kessler, a high-stakes lawsuit against
the neo-Nazi and white supremacist leaders who engaged in a conspiracy to commit
the racially motivated violence that took place in Charlottesville in August 2017.
Together with lawyers from Paul, Weiss and Cooley, Robbie and her team secured
a landmark $26 million jury verdict against many individuals and entities. Robbie
received her A.B. from Harvard College magna cum laude and a J.D. from Columbia
Law School (where she teaches a seminar on advanced civil procedure).
AUDREY STRAUSS represents clients in whitecollar
criminal defense and regulatory matters. Prior
to rejoining Fried Frank in 2022, Audrey served as
U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York
(SDNY), where she oversaw all criminal and civil
cases. During her tenure, she spearheaded a series of
high-profile cases, including prosecutions of whitecollar
crime, securities and commodities fraud, and
official corruption. Audrey was previously Counsel
to the U.S. Attorney and Deputy US Attorney. She
initially served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the
SDNY from 1975 through 1982, during which time
she served as the Chief of the Securities and Commodities Fraud Unit and the
Criminal Division's Chief of Appeals. In 2012, Audrey was named Vice President
and Chief Legal Officer for Alcoa. She earned her JD from Columbia Law School
in 1971, where she was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and a Kent Scholar. She
received her Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, from Barnard College.

PROFESSOR TOMER BROUDE
Professor Tomer Broude is Dean of the Faculty
of Law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem,
and the Bessie and Michael Greenblatt, Q.C.,
Chair in Public and International Law at the
Faculty of Law and Department of International
Relations. He specializes in public international
law and international economic law, particularly
international trade and investment, human rights,
dispute settlement, and development and cultural
diversity. He has served as Academic Director of the
Minerva Center for Human Rights at the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem, and Vice-Dean of the
Faculty of Law.
He is the author and editor of several books as well as numerous articles that have
appeared in leading academic journals such as International Organization, University
of Pennsylvania Law Review, European Journal of International Law, Leiden Journal
of International Law, Vanderbilt Law Review, Virginia Journal of International Law,
International Journal of Cultural Property, Journal of World Trade, World Trade Review,
and the Journal of International Economic Law. He is an Editor of the Journal of
International Dispute Settlement and a General Editor of the Cambridge University
Press book series on International and Economic Law (CITEL). He is one of the
founders of the Society of International Economic Law, and a former member of its
Executive Council.
He has taught at numerous law schools around the world, including the University of
Toronto, the University of Virginia, the University of California-Los Angeles, Fordham
Law School, Hong Kong University, McGill University, Melbourne Law School, the
University of British Columbia and Gujarat National Law University. Recently, he was
a distinguished fellow at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the
University of Toronto (2020-2022); and a fellow at the Berlin-based research group
“The International Rule of Law—Rise or Decline?”
He has been appointed to the indicative list of governmental and nongovernmental
panelists to hear WTO disputes and the list of Israeli arbitrators under the Israel-
MERCOSUR Free Trade Agreement. He was also appointed by the government of
Canada to the roster of NAFTA Chapter 19 (Trade Remedies) Panelists (now Chapter
10 of the USMCA). He is a member of Israel's Trade Remedy Advisory Board. Most
recently, he was appointed as an arbitrator in the Xi'an Arbitration Commission.

Law is Israel’s world-renowned
flagship of legal education and
research. From questions of religion
and state, constitutional law and
intellectual property, to the educational
philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau
and the plight of asylum seekers, the
discussions held at Hebrew University’s
Faculty of Law are wide-ranging.
Hebrew University’s Faculty of Law is the nation’s most dynamic. ‘Classic’ legal
research is conducted along with trailblazing programs in international law, multidisciplinary
studies and human rights research. Alumni include the majority of
Israel’s former Supreme Court justices (many now faculty members), legislators,
attorneys-general, social activists, and heads of NGOs.
One trend which sets Hebrew University, and the Law Faculty apart is its strong
emphasis on international, comparative and Jewish law. The Faculty’s goal is to train
students to perform in a global economy and a global political environment. The
Faculty hosts twenty visiting professors and legal scholars annually and encourages
students to spend a semester abroad so they may contextualize and see what is
happening elsewhere. In conjunction with nine other law schools, the Law Faculty
operates a Center for Transnational Legal Studies in London.
Broadening horizons—creating not simply good lawyers, but also well-rounded
individuals—finds expression in Hebrew University’s emphasis on interdisciplinary
studies. More than half the students are enrolled in dual degree programs. The
Faculty’s philosophy is that students cannot be law students without knowing
anything about the substantive context in which they operate. Whether graduates
eventually enter the public or private sector, their legal expertise is nurtured, as is
their sense of social responsibility and leadership.

Albert Einstein, who co-founded the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1918,
bequeathed his vast intellectual legacy to the University. Through a planned gift, you
can help to build an immense legacy of good for future generations. When you notify
us that you have made a planned gift to AFHU, you automatically become a member
of the Einstein Visionaries Society. Please contact us to discuss creating your own

Student scholarships are a wonderful way to nurture Israel’s greatest resource—the
intellectual strength of its people. Hebrew University offers a range of scholarships
and support packages funded by the university or external sources. The scholarships
are for students studying at all our academic departments and of all academic levels,
from our pre-academic programs to our most advanced degrees. You can provide
a talented and deserving undergraduate student with one full year of the best
education Israel has to offer for a donation of $5,000–$13,000. Graduate student
scholarships range from $5,000–$28,000 per year and Ph.D. degrees may be
partially supported with a gift of $17,500–$33,000. With a donation of $100,000
you can name and endow a scholarship fund to support a student in any field of
study. A large selection of scholarships is available with different acceptance criteria,
including: academic excellence or outstanding admission grades, socioeconomic
factors, exemplary social engagement, and international students. Please contact us

THE HEBREW UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF LAW is the flagship of legal education and research
in Israel. The Faculty of Law was founded as the first law faculty at an Israeli university in 1949, just
after the establishment of the State of Israel. Most of the leadership of the Israeli legal system, including
most of our past and present Supreme Court Justices, have graduated from the law faculty, or taught
therein. Most of the recipients of the prestigious Israel Prize in Law and Criminology also hail from
the faculty. The law faculty’s research work, which involves developments in legal theory with a global
application and more practical oriented study of law from critical and comparative perspectives,
is regularly published in the world's top law journals and publishing houses.
THE GEORGE A. KATZ TORCH OF LEARNING AWARD is presented annually to distinguished
members of the legal community and recognizes the leadership, scholarship and dedication
to the betterment of humanity. It embodies the high ideals and philanthropic commitment of the
late George A. Katz, co-founder of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, and dear friend of the American
Friends of the Hebrew University.
